Tuesday’s practice saw the team come out onto the field in full pads on a bright and hot morning. This was the first open practice since the home loss against USC last Saturday. As the stretch lines were moving, familiar faces such as quarterback Trenton Bourguet, offensive lineman Max Iheanachor, and edge Clayton Smith were all back in action in their respective ways.

The stretch lines concluded as the theme this week seems to be to build off a lot of the good things established against USC. Special teams were first after stretching, where placekicker Dario Longhetto continues to be consistent as he had a couple of made kicks last week. Today, Longhetto went 6-7 from distances of 45, 50, and about 35 yards. The lone miss was from 50, as the protection was also very sound.

Offensive individual drills took place after where the offensive line shuffling has now hypothetically affected the coaches. Assistant coach Saga Tuitele was absent from Saturday’s game and today’s practice dealing with medical concerns. Here, graduate assistant Steve Miller has taken the reigns and was leading the line on the stationary sled. The line today looks as if things are starting to get somewhat healthy under the circumstances. Cade Briggs was back last week, and Iheanachor was back today.

As the third period is the tempo offensive period, the offense was facing a scout team defense while the defense was working individually.

Looking at the defense first, the defensive line has been a high point for the team thus far. The defensive tackles were working off a one-man sled and practicing getting off the ball. Both freshman Tristan Monday and Blazen Lono-Wong took good reps. The defensive line worked on opposite shoulder drills, with assistant coach Vince Amey being very vocal as Dashaun Mallory looked good in the drill.

Defensive backs were practicing the flow of coverages between wide receivers and running backs. The emphasis here was maintaining good coverage in the flats as receivers need to be passed off. Freshman defensive back Keith Abney II had a great rep being reminded to keep their mind off the sidelines. Seen on the defense, the youth have been very notable in practice thinking in the future tense.

Linebackers worked a lot today on shedding second level blocks in preparation for Cal’s running attack, as they do like to run the football. Nonetheless, leverage was preached here as the players were urged to finish tackles before a second man would get there. Tre Brown led the charge as Will Shaffer, Tate Romney, and K’Vion Thunderbird followed.

Going back to the offensive tempo period, Trenton Bourguet took the first-team snaps in his first action since the game against Fresno State. In this period, Bourguet found Elijhah Badger, Jalin Conyers, and Gio Sanders for completions, but the bulk of the work here was for freshman running back Kyson Brown. Brown found many holes today while emphasizing the shiftiness in his play. Jacob Conover took second-team snaps today, as most of his work was also delegated to running backs Tevin White and Javen Jacobs.

Going deeper into the offensive individual drills, the tight ends individually worked on blocking techniques and schemes. The group is looking a lot more at full strength, with Conyers being a full participant, along with Bryce Pierre and Messiah Swinson. The tight ends then combined with quarterback for routes on air. Routes looked very in sync as Bourguet delivered some nice balls down the seam with little to no drops by the tight ends.

Quarterbacks continued with the wide receivers. The routes like in the past looked put together as even Troy Omeire was back in full participation rather than limited (was also dressed versus USC). Bourguet in particular, looked 100 percent after the time off. Conover as well looked more comfortable here, although he did struggle later in practice. Some deeper balls were thrown as Bourguet looked in control and efficient as they were completed.

After the individual drills, the special teams came back onto the field. The emphasis was punting here. Josh Carson has had his fair of struggles on game day as in practice, the consistency still is not there. This really being a key point as back-up place kicker Ian Hershey has begun punting in order to hopefully see some more consistency. There will be development here, surely.

As the offense went right back to the scout team, things seemed to really start clicking. Bourguet was at the helm and on two different occasions, Kenny Dillingham was very excited. Once sounded “boom!” while after another play, Dillingham ran down the field singing, “You, you got what I need!” The team periods heavily involving the run, but passes were thrown and caught efficiently. Bourguet in this period, did throw an interception to a scout team DB on an overthrown ball in what looked like a screen.

The momentum for Bourguet carried into the 1v1 and 7v7 periods as there were some nice over the shoulder balls thrown to Melquan Stovall and Omeire. During these periods, there was some nice coverage highlighted by Dee Ford and Ro Torrence. The defense got back into it after being dominated a bit, but they fought back and gained confidence as Conover was having a hard time placing balls.

Both sides ended practice on their respective fields as the offense continued to work efficiently although accompanied by heavy offensive line rotation. In the last segment, wide receiver Shawn Charles was involved greatly as the Gio Sanders/Trenton Bourguet connection we saw last year seemed to take a lot of shape today. Sanders a great practice.

The last defensive period was red zone oriented. The coverages seemed to be going over well as the athleticism stuck out. Ed Woods had a big tip that led to an interception. The defense finished strong as they have realty become the anchor for the Sun Devils and will need to lead again this week.
