The left side of the line would rotate by sides giving one side of the line a break between the first and second group (Na’a through Bray).

Tuesday’s practice was another hot one with the players in shoulder pads and helmets only like most Wednesdays. The team warmed up as the high energy has been consistent the last two days. It somewhat seems normal now to see running backs Kyson Brown and Tevin White dancing to a song playing as the Sun Devils now have one more day before making the trip up to Berkeley.

The team switched fields as today’s special teams’ emphasis was punting. Today like seen little in the past, back-up place kicker Ian Hershey joined Josh Carlson in the punting duties. Each kicker switched on kicks back and forth with full punt protection against a scout team. Carlson looked more consistent today as Hershey, who is still learning, had a hard time putting together some punts. Carlson ended up taking over with three straight kicks, those taking a step back from the good ones a couple of tries before.

Ball security followed as Elijhah Badger and Melquan Stovall led the receivers in securing catches and turning upfield. Badger has really become a more lead by example leader in the receiving room at practice. On the other side, tight ends, running backs, and quarterbacks worked in pairs trying to strip the balls from each other’s hands.

Taking a look at the offensive line, graduate assistant Steve Miller still in charge of the offensive line in Saga Tuitele’s absence. Offensive tackle Joey Ramos has been practicing without a taped hand, otherwise known as a club. As the linemen were working on the stationary sled bags, Miller was setting the tone energy wise, saying, “Were going to set the tempo for this sh*t.” This said right before the tempo team period as the team ran over to the main field.

As the tempo period came underway, Trenton Bourguet took the field after having quite the day yesterday. After a couple of Cam Skattebo runs and quick passes, Kenny Dillingham brought the offense together talking to them directly. After this, the team slowed down the tempo a bit going over what looked like some plays to install.

Quarterback Jacob Conover also made an appearance during the period but did not get much time in light of the installation.

The offense transitioned into individual drills as the energy and sharpness seemed to be in full effect ahead of the first road trip.

Going back to the offensive line, the line worked in pairs going over blocking schemes. The players would work from under the shoot working up field. The interesting thing noticed as practice went on was the communication and collaboration between Miller and the players. Everyone is getting on the same page to try and keep the momentum going. Dillingham was also in there at times instructing this group.

Just past the offensive line was the running backs running routes out of the backfield. Today, Javen Jacobs was very involved trying to get as many reps as opportunity has opened up for him as the running back room has been banged up so far this season. Later in practice, Jacobs was getting a lot of reps with the second team.

Across the field worked the receivers ran routes on air. An interesting development in practice is Andre Johnson receiving a lot more time at the receiver position over Xavier Guillory. Guillory still maintains control, but Johnson has made a push for more playing time making his first catch of the season last Saturday.

Other than that battle, quarterbacks Trenton Bourguet and Jacob Conover were locked in today delivering great passes balls to receivers all day. Kenny Dillingham said, “We’re dropping dimes today!” A lot of level one and level two balls were completed like yesterday, something was clicking. Troy Omeire working back also had another good practice as after another route, a lot of coaches yelled “Good route Troy!”

Special teams followed quickly with assistant coach Charlie Ragle going over punt returns and kickoffs. Ragle was vocal, as always, expecting more execution out of the group. He told the group to run things over and over before getting it right.

After special teams, a team period followed for the offense, with Bouguet again taking the first team snaps. Here, Brown got most of the carries and bulk of the work and Brown might get even more playing time than he did last week in order to give Skattebo a break. Heavy rotation accompanied Brown's carries as Johnson and Guillory rotated along with the line.

Conover came in and still kept things moving in a quicker passing game along with a heavy dose of the run game. During Conover’s time, Dillingham made another point to bring the group together before moving forward. It was slowed down again as the offense worked to walk-through things.

A 2v2 period followed as this portion has come into play more often preceding the 7v7 portion. During the 2v2, Badger played like his usual self as Melquan Stovall had a great portion of practice. Stovall was joined by Kaleb Black in the quick game as they really made the quarterbacks job easy. Bourguets and Conovers throws seemed seamless, which again kept translating into the 7v7 period.

A quick note for in between the 2v2 and 7v7 periods, if you were wondering how good the quarterbacks have played, in a walk-through play during the walk-through period, Bourguet connected with Stovall on a deep ball. The team cheered while Dillingham complimented the throw saying, “Beautiful…like a Picasso!”

Bypassing the 7v7 period where the team kept the consistency, the team ended as usual versus the scout team. Bourguet started 4-4 with completions to Badger, Guillory, Stovall and nice ball completed to Tevin White. Bourguet would finish the practice, with Conover getting little time after the 7v7 period. That said, Dillingham grouped the offense once more before giving the reigns back to Bourguet. Bourguet finished getting a lot of receivers involved, including Black and Gio Sanders. It will be interesting how many receivers get the ball come Saturday at Cal.
