Wednesday’s practice was another hot day as the team actually gets ready for temperatures about forty degrees cooler this weekend. The team practiced today in helmets, pads, and shorts as the practice was very team-oriented this morning.

As the team broke from the morning stretch, a team punt period followed rather than the field goal unit. Like yesterday, starting placekicker Dario Longhetto took the first punts today rather than walk-on Ian Hershey who punted for the team two weeks ago. Longhetto had a better day to start punting normally and somewhat rugby style. Hershey eventually took over and had a booming kick before struggling. Somewhat the opposite of yesterday for the kickers.

The team would then go into their ball security portion of practice where the offense had a ball carrier run into oncoming defenders with minimal blocking. The interesting thing here is the continuous sight of Colorado transfer wide receiver Jordyn Tyson getting more active in practice and getting some live reps this week. Besides Tyson, tight-end Bryce Pierre started practice very physically as he had some speed bumps yesterday in practice.

Like yesterday, the team tempo period featured the starters from both sides of the ball. Slot receiver and Colorado State transfer Melquan Stovall continues his development getting open over the middle for quarterback Trenton Bourguet. Bourguet also found tight ends Pierre and Messiah Swinson a couple of times as timeliness and efficiency is the repeated theme thus far.

After a brief team against-scout period for both sides of the ball, the team went into their individual drills for the day.

Starting with the defense, the defensive line had a huge emphasis on getting the arms of offensive linemen off of them. “Be violent, you’re not going to hurt them”, assistant coach Vince Amey said. Washington does not allow many sacks so the up-front pressure this week must be crucial.

Moving over to the defensive backs, the defensive backs were working on route recognition and when to jump a route. The defensive backs unfortunately have not intercepted a pass so far, but they have recognized that. On top of the jumping of routes, defensive backs worked on the collapsing on a check-down pass.

For linebackers, tackling was the point of interest of the day. Linebacker K’vion Thunderbird had a good practice today as he focused on hitting the outside shoulder of the ball carrier before bringing the player down.

Going back to the offense, instead of the usual elongated individual drills, there were a lot of routes run on air (against no defenders). Texas transfer wide receiver Troy Omeire has made a move this week receiving a lot more reps and attention. Assistant coach Ra’Shaad Samples has said Omeire was a work in progress, but it is evident he is coming into his own.

Besides Omeire, as mentioned earlier this week has been dominated by quicker passes and ultimately quicker decisions by quarterbacks. This went for backup BYU transfer quarterback Jacob Conover who saw an influx of time today as Bourguet would get coached up by head coach Kenny Dillingham or offensive coordinator Beau Baldwin.

A second special teams period followed. In this period there were a couple of different observations as walk-on punter Race Mahlum punted. His punts had a lot of backpins but were not horrible by any means. After punt, the team transitioned into kickoff where Idaho State transfer wide receiver Xavier Guillory got his opportunity to return kicks which is the usual role held by fellow receiver Elijhah Badger.

After this time, the offense went into the indoor facility “bubble” to replicate game noise as Washington is known for its atmosphere. A loud siren accompanied by the Washington band was played loud enough that you could hear it outside the enclosed “bubble”.

In the bubble against a scout team, the Bourguet-Omeire connection continues to grow as Omeire and Badger shared a lot of time today on the opposite side of Guillory. During this time, things worked efficiently with running backs Cam Skattebo and DeCarlos Brooks getting involved as well. Bourguet did throw an interception though on an underthrown ball downfield.

As the offense came out into a walkthrough/inside run period, the defense was getting in some work of their own before seven-on-seven took place. The offense had a bit of a sloppy time as two interceptions were thrown. One made by linebacker James Djonkam and the other by defensive back Alphonso Taylor.

Bouncing back in the red zone did Bourguet though as his connection with Guillory flourished as Guillory caught two touchdown passes. As mentioned earlier, Conover got some more time during this period as Bourguet would receive extra coaching for clarification and direction.

The defense ended the day against the scout team while the offense went back into the “bubble”. For the offense, crowd noise was pumped instead of the siren for third down which looked like it did have some mild effect. There were a couple of broken plays and incompletions which will have to be fixed before Saturday.

The team came together outside as the team broke for the day as they now are one day away from traveling up to Seattle.
