The Arizona State football team was out at open practice for the final time before they travel to Salt Lake City to take on No.18 Utah. In order to prepare for the difficult atmosphere at Rice Eccles Stadium, the offensive unit ran most of their 11-on-11 scout team work inside of the bubble with the noise level bumped up to 100.

With the bubble the noise echoes inside the pressure chamber, so everything is so much louder inside there. With the crowd noise as loud as it was communication was nearly impossible, and head coach Kenny Dillingham had to stop the noise in order to even speak to the players.

During the 11-on-11 session, senior tight end Messiah Swinson caught the first of a pair of amazing catches. On this one, Swinson ran a post and junior quarterback Trenton Bourguet hit him in stride with an accurate ball. Swinson had to jump up and catch the ball over his smaller opponent for a very impressive grab.

After the team transitioned back outside, the six-foot-eight Swinson was the target of a fade route in the deep red zone. The ball was a little bit behind him so he jumped up and snagged the ball one-handed across his body. It was a spectacular catch that sent the entire field into celebration.

With junior running backs DeCarlos Brooks and Cam Skattebo taking fewer reps, freshman Kyson Brown got the majority of the first-team snaps. Brown has seen limited live action this year due to the success of Brooks and Skattebo, but in practice on Wednesday, he was impressive. Brown had the ability to get to the second level quite consistently, often breaking out to the edge for good chunks and potential scores.

Although we can not report what the play detail was, after Brown scored a touchdown, Dillingham ran up to the freshman and yelled at him: "You are going to score on this play this weekend."

Overall, it was an effective practice for the ASU offense, and Bourguet built off of an impressive Tuesday performance with another formidbale performance Wednesday. It did not seem like the offense missed a beat inside the bubble, although it was difficult for me to hear anything Dillingham was saying. Then outside, Dillingham appeared impressed with the way Bourguet was distributing the ball today.

The defense’s ears were protected as they did not have to work inside the bubble and spent the entire day outside in the perfect weather. That didn’t mean they had no work to do. First, the team split into their individual defensive drills. Defensive line coach Vince Amey and Special Teams/EDGE coach Charlie Ragle worked with the line setting up different packages. The team would walk through each alignment before practicing at higher speeds and debuting it in the 11-on-11 session against the scout team.

It is difficult to tell how effective the pass rush was because they are not allowed to tackle the quarterback, but multiple offensive plays were thrown off of their timing by the dangerous ASU pass rush.
The team has begun doing a 11-on-11 good-on-good session near the beginning of practice where the first team offense and defense face off against one another. Dillingham had stopped doing the drill to begin the year because ASU was not able to risk any extra players getting hurt.

The session is usually just one or two periods so there are not a lot of plays run, but both sides of the ball are more energized when they are going up against the best of the other side. Defense and offense played to a bit of a stalemate with the defense making the biggest play.

Bourguet was attempting to hit Bryce Pierre over the middle on a slant, but the ball was tipped up in the air and brought down by senior defensive back Shamari Simmons. The whole defense immediately screamed in celebration, mobbing Simmons as he attempted to take the interception back for a pick six. The defense did not allow a touchdown in the good-on-good session.

The team then wrapped up practice with their usual drills. They had a 7-on-7 session with just the defensive backs and linebackers. Graduate linebacker Tre Brown had an interception. The team then shifted to their usual red zone defense and goal line stand dills. Overall, the defense has been the key to the Sun Devils’ success this year, and will look to make an impact against the highly physical Utes.
