Caleb with today's report
Wednesday's practice was lighter and shorter than usual as the players came out in shorts, spiders, and helmets. The duration of practice was done with Friday’s Spring game two days away and the fact that head coach Kenny Dillingham was pleased with the amount and level of work that took place in today’s session.
The two-deep did look different, especially on defense, since the players’ groupings on Friday will be different from what we normally see so far in spring.

After the team stretch period, the team broke into ball security before coming back together for the tempo period of practice. The drill was set up differently today as instead of the defense on one side of the field and the offense on the other; the team was divided evenly on either sideline to emulate a game-like scenario in preparation for the Spring Game.
Trenton Bourguet led the first group out as usual but things did not start well for the offense as the defense continued its dominance from Monday. Bourguet was “sacked” by Elijah O’Neal but made one completion to Melquan Stovall before the drive stalled.
The second group came onto the field led by Sam Leavitt, who found Markeston Douglas early before a tipped ball ended up in the hands of defensive back Keith Abney. Bouncing back, the offense moved down the field, getting into the red zone before stalling and effectively ending the period.
Both sides of the ball broke into a walk-through period before getting into their individual drills. Offensively, things moved quickly as the small group of tight ends got their day started working on hip explosion from a knelt position with coach Jason Mohns.
The offensive line, like usual, was under the shoot, working on their blocking schemes out of different combinations against padded shields. The running backs close by continued their theme of working on agility and reaction, moving over bags and around a big medicine ball.
Wide receivers on the opposite side of the field were working on their fluidity in out-breaking routes specifically. Position coach Hines Ward was very attentive to the group's footwork when it came to drifting upfield.
Most of the offense came together for a routes-on-air period where things looked very sharp. Both quarterbacks, with the addition of freshman quarterback Navi Bruzon, looked very good with their throws towards the end of the period. On the receivers’ end, Ward was yelling, “Hallelujah, no balls on the ground,” as the receivers had a good showing before some balls were dropped at the end of the period.
The team came back together for a shorter team portion that seemed to emphasize more running of the football. For both groups, nothing seemed to get going or become explosive as the defense limited things from a run-stopping aspect.
A short special teams period interrupted things as both Ian Hershey and Carston Kieffer had two attempts from about 42 yards, one from each hash. Both kickers were good from that distance as ASU’s special teams’ room will look different come fall as two more kickers are coming in.
Once the team came back together for the seven-on-seven portion, things did not pick up for the offense. Bourguet came out on the field and was nearly picked by linebacker Caleb McCullough before some short completions and incompletions followed.
It was more of the same tune for Leavitt as he was making some short completions before being picked off by Abney again for the second time today. Although things looked bleak, Bourguet came back and found some rhythm with Stovall and Jamal Young II. Leavitt then came back himself with two second-level strikes to Jordyn Tyson as that combo has been one to watch.
Practice ended with a condensed team 11v11, which saw only defensive success. Bourguet found Stovall in the middle of the field for a huge completion, but other than that, there was not much more before the horn sounded, ending practice 45 minutes ahead of the usual time.
Sun Devils will take to the field one last time in the spring at Mountain America at 6 PM on Friday night.
