It is a promotion for him, so the move is understandable. He has strong roots at ASU as his first full-time position was with the Sun Devils in quality control in 2010-12, and after a short stint at UCLA, he returned to ASU for the 2014-15 seasons as the senior associate offensive analyst. He and Dillingham knew each other, being together on the ASU staff at that time. Butterfield was born in Scottsdale and played high school football at Brophy. His late father. Steve Butterfield was a huge ASU booster who, among other donations, contributed significantly to the construction of the ASU football facility.

He re-joined ASU in December 2022 as the Football Chief of Staff/Senior Coaching Advisor/pro liaison and did a lot from an operation standpoint to reconstruct this football program. He knew Hines Ward from when Ward offered him a spot on his XFL team, so he helped make the connection between both parties. Needless to say, Ward has been an invaluable addition to the coaching staff.
