With where we are at this point in the season I hope Willie does some things.
1) Return the loyalty: Guys like Lampe, McClain, Davis, Long, Baez and others had every reason to transfer out, but they stayed true. Let Goff spend the rest of the season getting them ready for the draft. Give them green lights both in the box and on the bases. Help them showcase their talent for the draft.
2) Protect arms: No more 124 pitch outings. Use the rest of the season as an extended spring training where pitchers get live action developing and locating pitches.
3) Concentrate on pace for the younger guys: What does the pace of practice look like? What does it sound like? What does it look like taking infield? In the cages? What is the feeling in the dugout and the locker roomEstablish what that looks like over and over. What does a Sun Devil at bat look like? What does it look like when we take the field?
Our season likely doesn’t include the post season but it isn’t a throw away either. The silver lining with where we are is this is year 1 so it’s a great opportunity for Willie to make long term foundational decisions.
