ASU was back at practice today, looking for a turnaround week ahead of Saturday’s game against Colorado. Here’s our report from today:
LOCATION: Kajikawa Practice Fields
MEDIA AVAILABILITY: About 20 minutes
IN GREEN: QB Brady White
MUSCLE BEACH: OL Mason Walter, Corey Smith, Tyler McClure
BALL/SECURITY TACKLE: Nothing too new or ground-breaking from these drills today, but here’s some video of the defensive players working on their tackling.
TEAM/TEMPO
A lot happened in terms of personnel today, most notably at wide receiver and linebacker. Here’s what the teams looked like in today's practice:
OFFENSE
First Team
QB: Manny Wilkins
RB: Demario Richard/Kalen Ballage
WR: N’Keal Harry, John Humphrey, Jalen Harvey
TE: Tommy Hudson
OL: LT Cohl Cabral, LG Sam Jones, C A.J. McCollum, RG Steven Miller, RT Zach Robertson/Quinn Bailey
--Zach Robertson was on the first team in tempo, but Quinn Bailey replaced him in team.
Second Team
QB: Blake Barnett
RB: Nick Ralston/Nick Ralston
WR: Ryan Newsome, Jeremy Smith, Curtis Hodges
TE: Alex Otero/Frank Ogas
OL: LT Tyson Rising, LG Cade Cote, C Marshal Nathe, RG Alex Losoya, RT Quinn Bailey
--Ogas played on the second team in team drills, but it was Otero at tight end in tempo.
DEFENSE
First Team
DL: JoJo Wicker, George Lea, Tashon Smallwood
LB: A.J. Latu, Christian Sam/Khalyan Thomas/Deion Guignard, D.J. Calhoun
SPUR: J'Marcus Rhodes
DB: CB Chase Lucas, CB Kobe Williams, S Das Tautalatasi, S Chad Adams
--The first-team defense was quite the moving target today, especially at middle linebacker. Christian Sam didn’t play much during team and tempo drills, and was replaced by a handful of players rather than just one in particular.
--Smallwood only played during team drills. Shannon Forman was in his first-team spot during tempo.
Second Team
DL: Jalen Bates, D.J. Bates, Jordan Hoy
LB: Jay Jay Wilson Deion Guignard/Khaylan Thomas, Malik Lawal
SPUR: Tyler Whiley
DB: CB Darien Cornay, CB Mo Chandler, S Demonte King, S Evan Fields
--Deion Guignard and Khaylan Thomas also both showed up at linebacker on the second team, but Thomas was only with the second team in team drills.
After a rough weekend, especially on defense, ASU seems to be at least trying a few new things on that side of the ball. Maybe it's nothing, given that we only see 15-20 minutes of a two-hour practice, but we should know more about what these moves mean as Saturday gets closer.
