Hey guys, ASU returned to the practice field today and there were a couple quirks in the team session that I'll have in this report.
LOCATION: Kajikawa Practice Fields
ATTIRE: Pads
MEDIA AVAILABILITY: About 25 minutes
STRETCH MUSIC: Play That Funky Music x Wild Cherry, Livin' It up x Jarule
IN GREEN: QB Brady White, DL Jalen Bates, DB Demonte King, WR Curtis Hodges, WR Ryan Jenkins
PERSONNEL: These are the guys who appeared to be non-participants during the media viewing session: OL Zach Robertson, RB Nick Ralston, DB Evan Fields, TE Ceejhay French-Love, DL Jordan Hoyt, WR Jeremy Smith, WR Ryan Jenkins
BALL SECURITY: ASU did the same old, same old here. The Sun Devils worked on open-field tackling and they did not look good. The starting LBs had a few good reps to start, but the second batch of reps wasn't good. Christian Sam missed a tackle, Koron Crump missed one and D.J. Calhoun had a rep that wasn't great.
The positive side to this: ASU's running backs looked good. Eno Benjamin has some moves and Kalen Ballage always dazzles in the open field. However, the LBs will face players who are tough to tackle all season.
Good reps: Khaylan Thomas had good reps in this drill yesterday, and did again today.
11-on-11: ASU ran tempo and 11-on-11. The highlight was probably Blake Barnett throwing a beautiful wheel route to Jacom Brimhall for a long TD. I haven't seen
Here is who I had out there:
First team offense: QB Manny Wilkins, RBs Demario Richard/Kalen Ballage, WRs N'Keal Harry/Ryan Newsome/Jalen Harvey (slot), TE Jay Jay Wilson, LT Cohl Cabral, LG Sam Jones, C A.J. McCollum, RG Steven Miller, RT Quinn Bailey
Second team offense: QB Blake Barnett, RBs Eno Benjamin/Trelon Smith, WRs Terrell Chatman/John Humphrey/Kyle Williams, TE Tommy Hudson, LT Tyson Rising, LG Cade Cote, C Tyler McClure, RG Alex Losoya, RT Mason Walter
Notes: Eno Benjamin took first-team reps too.
First team defense:
D-Line: Tashon Smallwood, JoJo Wicker, A.J Latu / Shannon Forman (split reps) .. in first tempo session, Latu was in for a rep then was yanked.
LB: Koron Crump, D.J. Calhoun, Deion Guignard
SPUR: J'Marcus Rhodes
DB: CB Joey Bryant, CB Kobe Williams, S Das Tautalatasi, S Chad Adams
Second team defense:
D-Line: George Lea, Renell Wren, Doug Subtyl
LB: Abraham Thompson, Khaylan Thomas, Christian Sam (appeared to be a non-participant in team yesterday)
SPUR: Marcus Ball
DB: CB Chase Lucas, CB Darien Cornay, S Ty Thomas, S K.J. Jarrell
I mentioned the Blake Barnett throw earlier in the report. In terms of highlights, that play was about it. ASU never opens up the playbook too much during media viewing, which is completely understandable. Blake threw another deep shot, this one to Humphrey. It fell incomplete, though.
QUOTE OF THE DAY: Todd Graham was speaking on the microphone/PA system at practice. He sent the 3s over to the other field and then said, "Nobody will be standing around today! ... Except the reporters!"
That's it for today's report. Stay tuned for more coverage throughout the week. If you have any questions, feel free to ask.
