Who: UCLA
Where: Jackie Robinson Stadium (Los Angeles)
When: Tuesday (6pm) Wednesday (3pm)
Coverage: Not sure yet. Because we are the road team it will be UCLAs coverage.
Storyline:
Midweek games are easy to overlook because they don’t include Friday night starters or big crowds. However, the committee looks at Tuesday games with the same weight as Friday games so if the Devils want to build their resume, this midweek series matters.
RPI: West coast teams have long believed that the RPI unfairly hurt them because East teams refused to travel west leaving programs out here to canibalize each other. With the conference shake up, East coast teams are forced to travel west which in theory lessens the disadvantage. After ASU plays UCLA, the Bruins will welcome a 4 game stretch to L.A. of Vandy, UCONN, USC, and Michigan before starting conference play in Maryland. West coast fans rejoice. The era of isolationism is over.
Players to watch:
Vu: The San Diego native has somewhat of a homecoming this week. The ASU archives go back to 98’ and in that span Drew Maggi leads with 36 stolen bases followed by Bloomquist who stole 33, 32 respectively. Vu is on pace to steal 64 bases this season.
Compton: Is it just me or is Compton a dead ringer for fellow Buckeye High and ASU standout turned MLB gold glove winner Kole Calhoun? Kole’s senior season saw him hit 17 HRs while taking 64 walks. Compton has been tearing the cover off of the baseball and opposing teams have noticed leading to 13 walks in just 7 games. Some may remember the absolute tear Calhoun went on in Omaha in 2009. For Compton to get that chance he’s going to need ….
Tobias: If teams are going to walk Compton, Tobias has to make them pay. Vu and Compton have on base percentages of .500 and .618 so the ducks are on the pond for Tobias.
Walker: The senior transfer from the Bayou has had some fantastic moments early on for ASU including a great catch in foul territory, a few key double plays, and an 11 pitch double. But he’s hitting .105 and that’s not great. ASU has 4 middle infielders in Walker/Jax Ryan/BeckettZ/King. I’d like to see each get 2 starts per week and let playing time be earned. Hes also lightning fast. If ASU is chasing a run in the 8th or 9th inning, bringing him in to pinch run could be a game changer.
