I was reading this morning, in the local paper down here, about how the Cats baseball program has gone all in on the latest technology that includes...

TrackMan - a three-dimensional doppler radar system that measures the velocity, spin rate and trajectory of thrown and batted balls...

It also reveals, in real time, whether a pitch truly crossed the plate or not as a strike...

Other programs in the PAC that use this program are Oregon, Oregon St, USC and Wazzu...

Rapsodo - a pitch-tracking device that charts spin rates, degrees of break, and other minute metrics...

TruMedia - an analytics platform that enables teams to 'access video, filter and visualize traditional statistics and tracking data, and build advance scouting reports'...

Last year, Mississippi St was the first college team to use TruMedia and the Bulldogs won the CWS...

An electronic high-speed video camera is also being used by programs that can capture a pitcher's throwing motion at greater than 1,000 frames per second...

This has allowed some coaches to help pitchers alter their throwing motions to enhance certain pitches and to get rid of other pitches that don't have a good "get an out payoff"...

TrackMan helps batters with strike zone recognition so that they can answer these important questions...

Is the batter swinging at the right pitches in the zone..??

Is the batter taking the right pitches out of the zone..??

It also can help the batter determine whether their swing is too steep or not steep enough...

Sluggers generally want to get under the ball more while contact hitters want to stay on top of the ball and drive it through the infield, etc...

With all this technology there becomes a fine line between using analytics (science) and a coach's intuition, built from experience, as a baseball guy...

For the Cats, at least, they use this technology to simplify how they view opposing pitchers by giving them a name like "Johnny," for instance, as an opposing pitcher that has a high spin rate, along with a good breaking ball...

Teams like the Dodgers and Rangers now use analytics to utilize different defensive shifts for opposing hitters based on what their analytics are telling them...

The bottom line is that by having this technology and learning its lingo, college players who want to be pro players will be gaining insight that will serve them well in the major leagues...

I'm wondering what technology, if any, our Sun Devils are using to help them compete in the tough PAC baseball conference...

Go Devils!!!
