ASU travels to Stillwater to play the Oklahoma State Cowboys for the final regular season series in ASU's inaugural Big 12 season.
Oklahoma State joins ASU and Arizona as what I would consider the 3 blue bloods of the Big 12. The Cowboys have 20 CWS appearances and a National Championship.
A little fun fact about Cowboys head coach Josh Holliday. His father Tom was a graduate assistant coach at ASU in 1977 when ASU went to the CWS. Before that season, Josh was born in Mesa, AZ. Father Tom went on to become the head coach at Oklahoma State and took the Cowboys to the CWS in 1999. Similarly, Josh was an assistant under Pat Murphy and went to Omaha twice in 3 years. He then became the head coach at Oklahoma State and took the Cowboys to the CWS as well. Both father and son played in Omaha as players, went to Omaha as assistants at ASU and as Head Coach's at Oklahoma State. Josh played on that 1999 Cowboys team that went to Omaha. Tim played on the 1974 Miami team that went to Omaha.
I wonder how many people in college baseball history have played in, been an assistant coach in, and been a head coach in the CWS? To have a father/son duo do it is remarkable. For them to both have been assistants at ASU and HC at Ok St is unbelievable.
As for ASU, how does everyone feel?
After the last 3 games people are probably feeling really good. I know I am.
At 35 wins I’m feeling pretty safe about ASUs post season chances. Especially with Ok St being a Q1 opponent on the road. But Bloomquist didn’t sound content last night after the game. He wants more. Hes really riding the “nobody believes in us” mantra that worked for Dillingham and maybe that means 2025’s best baseball is still ahead of us.
Here are the 3 things I’ll be watching this weekend
1) Road Warriors: ASU is just 9-9 away from Muni this season. There is something to be said about having a winning record on the road, especially since Muni is now closed for the summer
2) Length from starting pitching:
Jacobs and Martinez have been strikeout machines. Both passing 100 k’s on the season against Houston. They’ve kept us in every game they’ve started, but they’ve also allowed the other team to hang around. Does Bloomquist pair Carlon with Jacobs like he has Martinez/Alba?
Related, the only thing that can’t happen this weekend is Jacobs or Martinez throw 110+ pitches. I don’t really even care if we get swept. Smith ruined Marsh’ arm in 2019 and screwed us for the regional. Don’t do that.
3) Stolen bases + Home Runs: I love players that can hit home runs and steal bases. ASU archives go back to 1998 and only 1 time has ASU’s offense had SB + HR be more than 200.
With 6+ games left to play ASU is 3rd with 192. Trailing 1999 (197) and 2010 (204).
It is the only ASU offense going back to 1998 to have 80+ HRs and 100+ SB
