In this interview Dan Bickley asked Hurley about how he saw his future at ASU. Legitimate question for sure because his contract does expire in 2024 and no one at ASU is in a hurry to extend him.
Now does Ray Anderson want to wait and see how these next two weeks unfold as well as see what transpires in the Pac-12 tournament? I strongly believe that to be the case.
Hurley during the interview on the one hand said how much he loves the school and the quality of living in the valley. On the other hand he said it's hard to predict what's going to happen in the long term which I think is smart on his end to state that. You don't want to make a statement today that may make you look stupid a few weeks from now.
If Hurley ends up winning 20 games or more and still doesn't make the NCAA tournament, his opinion on whether he should or should not be extended may ultimately be different than what ASU feels. And with jobs at both St John's and Georgetown about to open up if one of those schools came calling basically offering him a more stable professional future it may be impossible for Hurley to turn that down.
And needless to say, and no I'm not presenting this is a plausible scenario, that if ASU goes on a tear for the next few weeks and qualifies for the NCAA tournament (And yes even if that first game is in dreaded Dayton) then I would expect ASU to move in short order to extend Hurley beyond next year.
