He is a former Duke player and alumnus who is now Associate Head Coach at Duke...he just turned 40, is married and has three children...

He has a 175-110 (.614) as a head coach at VCU (4 yrs) and Oklahoma (5 yrs) with three Dance appearances that included an Elite Eight, with Blake Griffin leading the way...

He recruited McDonald's AA Blake Griffin to Oklahoma who led the Sooners two Dance appearances and a 30-6 record in 2008-09, when they went to the Elite Eight...

He also recruited three other McDonald AA players, who left school early for the NBA, which hurt Capel's post Elite 8 teams and led to his being fired two years later...

The Sooners were being investigated at the time for some improprieties but Capel was never implicated in any wrongdoing...

He therefore signed four McDonald's AA during his tenure at Oklahoma...

During the past two seasons at Duke, he had a prominent hand in signing six McDonald AA players and Duke is once again in the Final Four this year...

So, one of his obvious strengths is his recruiting abilities, although Duke and Oklahoma certainly have more sex appeal than ASU...

He had successful head coaching tenures at VCU and Oklahoma, is a proven recruiter and is young with an excellent pedigree...

The only real blemish is what happened at Oklahoma following their Elite 8 appearance...

From a personality (I've seen him in interviews and he is smooth and engaging) and recruiting standpoint he would be an upgrade over Herb and his coaching success had a big upward trajectory until the last two years of his career at Oklahoma...

He most probably could energize the Sun Devil fan base and recruit a higher caliber player than what Herb was able to consistently do at ASU...

Can he make the Devils a program that is always competing in the top third of the PAC and qualifying for the NCAA tournament on a regular basis..??

I don't think anyone knows that but he would certainly be a better candidate than Trent Johnson, Anthony Grant and Bobby Hurley, at least in my estimation...

Championships or Bust...Go Devils!!!
