Hey everyone, Arizona State football returned to the fields for their sixteenth practice of the preseason. That means there are 5 practices left between now and the season opener, August 29th vs. Kent State, and we’ll have you covered for each one.
LOCATION: Kajikawa Practice Fields -- outdoors
ATTIRE: Shells
MEDIA AVAILABILITY: Full two hours
GREEN NON-CONTACT JERSEYS: LB Stanley Lambert
PERSONNEL NOTES
Because ASU is technically into game prep for its Aug 29 game vs Kent State (which is 11 days away), the Devils went against a true scout team for the second time this fall.
ICYMI, we tracked which freshmen were in a scout-team jersey and which weren’t. Now, we would like to think that because a freshman doesn’t have a scout-team jersey means they won’t redshirt, but with the new four-game redshirt rule, all bets are off. Anyway, here is what we spotted.
Freshmen on scout team:
OL Ben Scott
OL Marco Salas
OL Alijah Bates
WR Andre Johnson
LB Fritzny Niclasse
RB Demetrius Flowers
DL Anthonie Cooper
DB Connor Soelle
Not in scout team
QB Jayden Daniels
QB Joey Yellen
QB/WR Ethan Long
WR Jordan Kerley
TE Nolan Matthews
OL Dohnovan West
OL LaDarius Henderson
DB Keon Markham
DB Kejuan Markham
DL Stephon Wright
S Willie Harts
CB Jordan Clark
DL Amiri Johnson
WR Ricky Pearsall
LB Elijah Juarez
OL Roman DeWys
**** If Henderson and West play this year, and don’t redshirt, they’ll be the first offensive linemen since Cohl Cabral to do so. (They could still play up to four games and use their redshirt)

OFFENSIVE NOTES:
-- WR John Humphrey announced he was entering the transfer portal Monday morning. Humphrey is a redshirt senior and can play right away. The news comes just before class starts, which allows him to start at a new school with far less hiccups. Humphrey’s two years in Tempe were injury riddled. He missed all of last year with a torn Achilles, ending his ASU career with 13 receptions for 177 yards and one TD.
-- Yellen got bailed out thanks to a dropped interception by Aashari Croswell. Yellen was looking for Nolan Matthews on a deep post and Crosswell jumped it, but instead of catching the ball with his hands, he tried to corral it with his body. The drop just adds to a laundry list of them he’s had during practices in two years. It also saved Yellen from what would have been his fifth pick in the last week.

FIRST TEAM DEFENSE
DL: (end) Jermayne Lole/Michael Matus, (nose) D.J. Davidson/Shannon Forman/T.J. Pesefea, (end) George Lea/Roe Wilkins
LB: Khaylan Kearse-Thomas/Tyler Johnson (OLB), Merlin Robertson (MIKE), Darien Butler/Kyle Soelle (OLB)
CB: Chase Lucas, Kobe Williams
TILLMAN: Evan Fields
S: Aashari Crosswell, Willie Harts
*Cam Phillips did not practice with the team, was limited to muscle beach/individual work
*As evident in the depth chart, the coaches really mixed and matched the personnel on the front six, at one point rotating in two d-linemen at a time every few plays. It seems like the coaching staff just wanted different guys to get experience playing with each other- a theme it began establishing during Camp T.
SECOND TEAM DEFENSE

S: Alijah Gammage, Kejuan Markham
*Niclasse was wearing a gold scout-team jersey throughout practice

PERSONNEL NOTES
- Muscle Beach: WR Geordon Porter, OL Jarrett Bell, S Cam Phillips, TE Curtis Hodges
- Hodges has been out for the last few days for unknown reasons, we found out Sunday. He walked into practice with his left arm in a sling. OC Rob Likens didn’t seem too concerned about it when talking to him after practice but noted his absence has hindered ASU’s two-tight-end passing attack. Obviously it’s not a good look 10 days before the first game.
- Freshman DL Stephon Wright was a full participant in practice after spending most of Fall camp rehabbing an injury.
- Freshman LB Case Hatch was not spotted at practice for a third straight day. We speculated yesterday’s absence could’ve been due to his strong religious affiliation, being on a Sunday, but it’ll be worth looking more into now that he’s missed a third straight practice
