Arizona State football returned to the fields for their first practice since Friday night’s game. Here are our observations from the media viewing period

LOCATION: Kajikawa Practice Fields -- outdoors

ATTIRE: Shells

MEDIA AVAILABILITY: 20 minutes

GREEN NON-CONTACT JERSEYS: LB Stanley Lambert

PERSONNEL NOTES

  • Muscle Beach: DB Jordan Clark
  • Offensive linemen Jarrett Bell and Steven Miller -- both of whom exited Friday's game with an injury -- were in full pads for Monday's practice and back in the first-team rotation.

  • Linebacker Tyler Johnson, who didn't dress against Sac State with an injury, was running sprints with a trainer on the far field. That basically means he was on muscle beach.

  • Tight end Curtis Hodges was out of his green, non-contact jersey for the first time in nearly two weeks. Not sure yet if he will play on Saturday against Michigan State but we will ask around and monitor it.

  • Quarterback Dillon Sterling-Cole was not visible during practice. Don't want to speculate because he could have been in the bubble and no one saw him, but that's something we will update you on with more information.

  • Wide receiver Geordon Porter -- who has been out over a month -- was dressed in full pads on Monday and watching kick returns. Still doesn't look like a full-go but I could see him playing in the next few weeks.

  • Kicker Brandon Ruiz was walking to the bubble in the sight-line of Herm Edwards. Edwards walked over to him and it looked like he asked how Ruiz was feeling to which, based upon Ruiz's body language and gestures, the Sun Devil kicker said he was feeling good.

Other Notes & Quotes:

-- Kick Returners: Brandon Pierce, Jack Jones, Brandon Aiyuk

-- Pierce went first returning kicks, as it will be interesting to see if he is given a larger role on special teams, if nothing else, this Saturday

-- "Listen, that can’t happen,” Special teams coach Shawn Slocum said to Aiyuk and Darby after they let a kickoff take a high bounce in-between them inside the five yard-line before Aiyuk snatched it and went through with the return.

-- “You always got to threaten them like ‘oh, he’s coming,’” coach Herm Edwards said to redshirt freshman LB Stanley Lambert, who again was practicing with the d-line, as Edwards gave him pointers on his stance when lining up at edge-rusher.

-- “Ima put on a show, I’m not playing, I’ve been working a long time for this,” starting RT Steve Miller was heard proclaiming as the players walked over for stretching. The only game he missed last season was ASU’s 16-13 victory over a then-ranked Michigan State team.
