As the long-awaited start to fall camp ended this morning, the offense under Kenny Dillingham and company worked through the warm morning with a lot of competition and attention to detail. This included a lot of things such as pad level, footwork around obstacles and of course route running.

The stretching period came and went as the players energy levels were very apparent dancing and hollering before the team broke into position individual drills. The receivers started off, working on a lot of jab steps, and getting low simulating getting out of breaks on routes or stuttering. Veteran and star receiver, Elijah Badger led the group drill. Following a couple of people behind was Xavier Guillory who looked very fluid in the drill as well.

Moving forward, ball security was a major play in today’s practice. As the offense transitioned into a ball security drill, Dillingham on the loud microphone was yelling, “74 percent of winning the game when turnovers are won”. All offensive skilled position players ran the width of the field punching the ball carriers’ ball while also trying to strip them of the ball as well.

While the skilled position players were working on footwork and ball security, the lineman spent most of today’s practice working on striking at/right under pad level. Not just while staying static, but off a turn, knees, and even working backwards simulating the movement of a pocket. Offensive line coach Saga Tuitele wanted productive reps while providing pointers or commentary on some of the groups working.

After the first respective individual position sessions, the team moved into the first team session. Although short, it was the first look at if anything was going to be much different from the spring…it wasn’t. Trenton Bourguet took first team reps with familiar faces like Jalin Conyers, Badger and somewhat new face Guillory. Productive reps with quick targets seemed to round out the first group as Conyers was a favored target as we expected with a lot of chemistry between the two.

Second team was headed by Drew Pine with a lot of the up and comers working in such as Jake Smith, Messiah Swinson, Troy Omeire and Bryce Pierre. Pierre looking great at practice today with clean route running and a lot of targets. Both groups looked very clean, but it was evident that the first group was just a tad more on the same page and on time. Timeliness being one of the keys to a successful offense.

Moving Back to individual work post team session, the skilled position athletes moved a sort of round-robin drill set up. One drill included athletes running into and stiff-arming pads maintaining balance and control. Another more pad level work off jab steps, exploding into the following obstacle. All drills getting guys back into the feel of game/competitive reps.

As practice continued, there was more route running and pass catching work trying to get quarterbacks and receivers on the same page while of course working on timing. Quarterbacks worked in usually twos or threes. Bourget, Pyne and at some points Jaden Rashada throwing quick routes to receivers, tight ends and running backs. As another group ensued, other quarterbacks like Jacob Conover would take reps but if there was a quarterback needed to complete a rep, count on Bourguet to pick up the rep even if it’s the second or third teamers. He was taking all that he could.

Although all eyes were on the quarterback battle, that in this case seems to be favoring Bourguet (similar to spring), the relationship between Badger and Omeire was apparent as the two were always talking between reps and even the coaches are homing in on the development of Omeire. Omeire being a great storyline out of spring that looks like it’s going to transfer into the fall.

After what was a popsicle break, it was time for some 1v1 competitions. Conyers v. Shamari Simmons started it off with Conyers catching a ball over the middle from Bourguet. Secondly was Omeire v. Macen Williams which was broken up on a ball to the back left pylon. Badger v. Ro Torrence was third as again a ball was completed over the middle giving the offense another win. Lastly after a lineman throwing competition, the spotlight was on newcomer Jake Smith v. Jordan Clark which ended in an incompletion on the back right pylon.

Moving forward, the offense went into an inside run period. The offensive line again being very similar to the spring. The first team group being listed above. Second Group being mentioned above. Running backs shared a lot of reps as DeCarlos Brooks started it off but names like Cam Skattebo, Javen Jacobs and Tevin White were very apparent. Brooks elaborated after practice that the team needs to stay consistent to find success down the road.

Second team portion ensued after a short 7v7 and as expected, most of the 1 team guts mentioned above were starting the period with Bourguet at the helm. The portion was pass dominant with the occasional run. Bourguet was very efficient finding guys like Badger and Conyers for short to mid-range gains. There were a couple times where both QB’s faced some pressure and that led to balls in the dirt. Bray was shaky with a couple of low snaps, something we really didn’t see from him in the spring.

Pyne came in with a lot of the second team guys mentioned above. In his first stint during the team portion, it was apparent that there was a Pyne-Smith connection as they hooked up for a couple of short passes.

Back to Bourguet. Things opened a bit the second time around as he connected with Guillory leading Guillory to some decent yards after the catch. A lot of quicker connections even to brother Coben Bourguet. As seen again like the Spring, Bourguet looked sharp going through progressions that a lot of time led to nice tosses to tight ends.

Rounding off the team period, Pyne would come in again and splitting a couple plays in between, found Pierre for a great downfield connection on a up high ball. Later he would also connect with Conyers and Guillory on a dig route and stop route.

Although things looked good, back shoulder fades were a weak point, but coach Dillingham ended the practice with a couple of rounds of back shoulder throws to end things for the first day back to work. At the end of the day popsicles and all, Dillingham was pleased with the return of the Sun Devils.
