Hey guys, ASU was back out at practice today, fresh off its win over Utah. Here are the latest takeaways from Jeff Griffith and I as the Sun Devils get ready for UCLA on Saturday.
LOCATION: Kajikawa Practice Field
ATTIRE: Shells
MEDIA AVAILABILITY: First three periods, approximately 40 minutes
STRETCH MUSIC: "Started from the Bottom," by Drake // "Antidote," by Travis Scott
IN GREEN: S Jalen Harvey
PERSONNEL NOTES
-- Following the opening stretch period, we noticed the following players head into the bubble: George Lea (R-Jr./DL), Darien Cornay (Jr./DB), John Humphrey (R-Jr./WR), Terell Chatman (R-Jr./WR), Ty Thomas (So./S), Ryan Newsome (R-Jr./WR) and Ryan Kelley (R-Fr./QB)
-- We also did not see wide receiver N'Keal Harry at practice today. He was banged up in the first half of the Utah game with what looked like a shoulder injury but stayed in the game. Not sure if that was the reason for his absence.
FIRST-TEAM OFFENSE
QB: Manny Wilkins
RB: Isaiah Floyd/Paul Lucas
WR: Brandon Aiyuk, Kyle Williams, Frank Darby
TE: Tommy Hudson
OL: LT Zach Robertson, LG Roy Hemsley, C Cohl Cabral, RG Alex Losoya, RT Quinn Bailey
--Casey Tucker practiced with the first-team line at LG in position drills, but Hemsley had his spot during 11-on-11.
--N'Keal Harry was nowhere to be seen today, and Eno Benjamin didn't participate in 11-on-11 but was pacing the sidelines and active in other parts of practice. Can't image either of these is anything serious.
SECOND-TEAM OFFENSE
QB: Dillon Sterling-Cole (Didn't play, based on recent practices)
RB: Nick Ralston/A.J. Carter
WR: Brandon Aiyuk, Geordon Porter (Only five receivers played today)
TE: Jarick Caldwell
OL: LT Tyson Rising, LG Casey Tucker, C Cade Cote, RG Steve Miller, RT Spencer Lovell (Based on position drills)
FIRST-TEAM DEFENSE
DL: Jalen Bates, Renell Wren, Jermayne Lole
LB: Merlin Robertson, Darien Butler, Tyler Johnson
CB: Chase Lucas, Kobe Williams
TILLMAN: Jalen Harvey
S: Demonte King (Boundary Ranger), Cam Phillips (Field Ranger)
-- This is the first time we have seen Cam Phillips with the starters. I believe Danny Gonzales said that he would redshirt but with three games remaining, he may be a strong candidate to really take advantage of the new four-game redshirt rule.
-- With George Lea in the bubble, Lole took his place at starting defensive end after a sack and two TFLs.
SECOND-TEAM DEFENSE
DL: Darius Slade, Shannon Forman, Jordan Hoyt
LB: Jay Jay Wilson, Khaylan Kearse-Thomas, Malik Lawal
CB: Terin Adams, Dom Harrison
TILLMAN: Evan Fields
S: Langston Frederick (Boundary Ranger), Aashari Crosswell (Field Ranger)
-- This is the first time we have seen Jay Jay Wilson in 11-on-11 in weeks because the second-teamers have not been coming out for the media-viewing period. As Hod has mentioned, Wilson may redshirt this season as injuries and suspensions have allowed his to play just three games.
QUOTE OF THE DAY:
Kyle Williams ran a quick out route and was wide open, but the ball went through his hands. Jalen Harvey was running over to "tackle" Williams from his Tillman position.
Harvey, after Williams' drop: "You gotta catch that, number 10!"
That's it from today's practice. Stay tuned for more coverage throughout the week leading up to ASU's game against UCLA Saturday 12 p.m. If you have any questions, as always, feel free to ask.
