There is an article in the Daily Star today entitled "Southern powerhouses have ruled sport lately" that highlights "that college football is still very much a regional sport across the country"...
And, this is why the South has dominated the sport over the past decade and a half, winning 13 of the past 14 national championships...
The South, where college football is a religion, produces more four and five-star players than the rest of the country, and they go to schools predominately in their region, so it's easy to see why the South does as well as it does each year...
There is an established correlation between the number of elite recruits staying in the South and playing for teams there, and subsequently making runs at national championships...
"According to 247 Sports composite rankings, there are 343 players currently ranked four-star or better in the 2020 class"...
"Of those players, 201 are from states with SEC schools, with Florida (57), Texas (50) and Georgia (32) leading the way"...
The ACC, that also covers both Florida and Georgia, has 127 four and five-star players...
The Big 12 is next with 57, though only seven reside outside of Texas...
The Big 10 has 52, if Wash, DC is included...
The PAC-12 has 50 in its states, 29 from California...
The article notes that in California there is less participation in HS football these days while it seems to be increasing in states like Georgia...
The article makes the point that the mild year round weather in the South plays a big role in its dominance, as the colder weather in the North and Midwest prohibits year round sports participation...
The result of all this is that there are more "ready-made" players being produced in the South than elsewhere, where players need more time to develop in a college program...
Nothing new here but it just reinforces the difficulties that our PAC region faces while trying to compete with other regions of the country...
