Mornin Mates...

Today's Topic = Re-Purposing

My wife and some of her friends and family have caught this bug and are acting accordingly...they've discovered "re-purposing" which is taking something and changing its function around to something else...an easy example would involve taking a bathtub and making into a planter, where you can grow flowers or vegetables, instead of take a bath on a Sunday afternoon...

As a result, our sun room at home now has any manner of "junk" that she has gotten at yard sales and other places that she is now "re-purposing" into some very creative sorts of things, that I don't think most men would appreciate but are certainly appreciated by most women as far as I can tell...

It should be noted, as an aside, that she has been trying to "re-purpose" me for years but with only limited success...

Anyway, this got me thinking, naturally, about the recent conversations we've been having about possibly "re-purposing" WFA from a primarily basketball platform into a potential hockey platform...the plumbing is already there for an ice rink, from what I've read, but there are all kinds of cost and logistical issues that would need to be addressed and solved, in order for that to happen, so it is very doubtful that WFA would be "re-purposed" in that way...

However, our athletic funding district is going to re-purpose much of our current property and facilities to provide long term funding to our athletic endeavors...for instance, we're going to take the Karsten Golf Course and Packard Stadium (etc) and use them for different purposes in the coming years...

I only bring this up because, since I've been an ASU stockholder for over 40 years, we've gone from a "manifest athletic destiny" of sorts, where we as the WAC champs, in so many things, were expanding on all fronts, especially with facilities, where SDS was expanded to meet a growing demand, WFA was built to grow basketball, Packard stadium was built to better exploit our elite baseball program, etc...

It was all about "expansion" and not "contraction" related to "re-purposing" existing facilities into different venues or however you wish to characterize this change...

It's most definitely related to another key guiding principle these days which is "sustainability" that, as we all know, is something academics and politicians love to talk about...

Of course, where this all ends is anyone's guess at this point, especially as it relates to Sun Devil athletics...

On another note, in 2008, following Erickson's 10 win season at ASU, the Sun Devil Club had 12,020 members that included 15 individuals that gave $100K or more a year to the athletic dept, and another 13 that gave $50K a year, and another 21 that gave $25K a year, and 31 that gave $15K a year, and 70 that gave $10K a year, and 199 that gave $5K a year, and another 479 that gave $2,500 a year...

I only bring this up because Graham, Anderson and Crow are now in the process of putting together a Sun Devil "Coaches Club" whereby 50 well heeled individuals are being asked to donate $50K a year over 10 years, to provide a $500,000 addition to the football bank account each year, that would provide $2.5M a year or $25M over ten years to the football program...

I belong to the "Scrubs Club" that pays for their season football tickets each and every year and occasionally makes some other small donations when requested...its part of the "strength in numbers" donation that someone like me makes because I enjoy Sun Devil athletics so much...

Getting back to "re-purposing" it is clear that this site will need to undergo some changes in the near future in order to properly compete with the other site known as Scout...I know that is on the agenda for the new publishers of this site, and I wonder how much the "high definition" appearance of the Scout site, compared to this site, leads to the big disparity in the number of fans that frequent both sites...

I don't know why this site gave up on offering different free forums for the fans but I'm sure doing that is a bunch of work for the publishers and there may be all kinds of cost considerations that go into that as well...it's good to see their return these days and hopefully the community will grow as a result...

In any event, I am very happy to be a part of this site and what it offers and hope that all of you will do your part in making this a great place to hang out while following Sun Devil athletics...

I wonder what my wife will be "re-purposing" today..??

G'day Mates...Championships or Bust...Go Devils!!!
