Mornin Mates...

Today's Topic = Herm and the Art of Football Maintenance

We're starting a journey once again to overcome the mediocrity associated with our football program but, this time, with what I would call a Football Master as our head coach...

We have a very thoughtful and philosophical man as our head coach as we start this new journey and it will be interesting to see how all this plays out this coming season and beyond...

When I was attending graduate school at ASU in the 70's a popular book back then, entitled "Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance" by Robt Pirsig, was a huge best-seller, especially on college campuses around the country...

It was about a man's journey across country on his motorcycle with his son in tow and, while traveling, he philosophizes about the nature of values and fundamental spiritual questions from a Zen like perspective...

After listening to and reading many of Herm's answers to many questions related to his new job as HC at ASU, it is reminding me of fictional characters like Yoda in Star Wars, the martial arts monk in the TV show Kung Fu, and Pat Morita guiding the Karate Kid in the movie by that name...

I'm also struck by how corny that all sounds, especially in this social media age, where communication is based on very short bursts of words and thoughts with very little contemplation regarding the real meaning of anything...

And, Herm, more than anything else that I can see is about the real or true meaning of what football is all about and how he fits into that reality and what that will mean to his players and his team moving forward...

It's a very esoteric approach to the game and, like I've already mentioned, it will be interesting to see how all this plays out at ASU in this very fast paced, digital world we live in...

Related to all this, some of us feel that he is bewildered by the strange and largely negative reception he has received from the media and others regarding his hire by ASU, since he is a Football Master, after all...

And, I think, this is why RA hired him in the first place, while bypassing more conventional coaching candidates...

I mean who wouldn't want to have a Football Master coaching their football team...;)

I'm bringing this up because in today's social media world I'm wondering how this more philosophical, long-winded approach will play out with recruits and their families...

Luckily, he has many on his staff that are fine-tuned into this social media world and know how best to exploit it, and he also has the renovated stadium and new football facility to show off while talking football with recruits and their families...

Anyway, I'm listening and looking forward to this new journey we are on...maybe we've found a true Football Master that can finally elevate our football program to a much higher level...

What say you..??

G'day Mates and Go Devils!!!
