Not only did the Sun Devils finish fourth in the NCAA tournament but they also had five wrestlers who were deemed All-America since they finished in the top 8 of their respective weight classes, shown as follows...
125 weight class - Brandon Courtney finished second and is only a JR
133 - Michael McGee - finished sixth and is only a JR
157 - Jacori Teemer - finished fourth and is only a SO
165 - Anthony Valencia - finished eighth but is a SR
Heavyweight - Cohlton Schultz finished fourth and is only a FR
The Devils have a lot of wrestlers returning and have had very good, recent, highly ranked recruiting classes so the future looks very promising for this program under Zeke Jones...
They have about eight Top 50 ranked wrestlers in their past couple of recruiting classes, wrestlers that were recruited by most of the big boys in the sport like Iowa, Penn St, etc...
This makes you wonder if Zeke could put together a national championship team like Bobby Douglas did decades ago for the Sun Devils...
He's going to have a state-of-the-art arena in a couple of years that he will share with hockey and women's gymnastics with which to attract additional elite wrestlers...
I think the same thing could be said about Greg Powers hockey program that is making great strides as a Div 1 hockey program the past couple of years...
Greg is also recruiting at a high level that bodes well for his program becoming a national Top 10 player and one that could very quickly compete for a national championship...
On another note, it was good to find out that Bobby Hurley has been recruiting for the Sun Devils, which doesn't necessarily mean that he will be returning as our coach next season, as there are numerous coaching vacancies at various schools across the nation that he may be interested in pursuing...
The question doesn't appear to be whether he might be interested in any of them but, rather, whether any of them would be interested in hiring him to coach their teams...
Also wonder who he might be considering for his assistant coaching vacancy as it has been very quiet around ASU basketball this March as we all know...
What that all means is anybody's guess at this time, I suppose...
On a final note, it's great, at least for me, that the PAC is making a nice statement in the tournament by having all five of its teams advance so far...
Oregon St has already beaten a #4 Seed in Tenn and UCLA has already beaten a #6 Seed in BYU...
G'day Mates...
Go PAC and Go Devils!!!
