Mornin Mates...

Today's Topic = Is a 53 player football roster enough ?

It seems to work pretty well in the NFL and the way things are going in this new transfer portal and NIL world I'm not sure that ASU can get enough quality talent, at various levels, to fill 85 scholarships, that is allowed by the NCAA...

Add to all this the "one and done character" of many of the transfers and what do you have for the long term when building a football roster..??

If my memory is correct, we have lost about 18 players to the transfer portal, many of whom were starters or projected starters and, in return, we have gotten around 12 replacements, mostly from places that don't stack up to the PAC in terms of competition, at least on paper...

Not sure how this "trade differential" is going to effect things this season and, even if we somehow match what we did last season, will this "one and done, trade differential" make winning unlikely on a sustained basis, moving forward for our program..??

As we all know, our last recruiting class didn't even break into the Top 100 or barely did, if that, mostly because of low numbers that were signed and, given the portal, NIL deal and NCAA investigation are we doomed to a not too bright future because of all of that..??

But, if we really don't need 85 scholarship players on a roster and can compete well with the rest of the PAC, with a 53 player roster, maybe this isn't a doomsday scenario...

Maybe it will turn out to be a blessing in disguise since it would save the school a bunch of money that could be used elsewhere...

What do you all think about a 53 player roster..??

On another related note, we are all relieved, I think, by the acquisition of Emory Jones and Cam Johnson, two SEC warriors that have very good credentials...

Emory was a starting QB at Florida and Cam was a noted receiver at Vandy and both will be here in time for preseason football practice...

Emory is a true dual-threat QB, the way Jayden was for us while he was at ASU, the past three years...

QB talent isn't a question for Emory but whether he will be able to assimilate all he needs to know about our offensive playbook in time for the season opener against NAU on Sept 1st...

We still need a couple more receivers and some lineman, too, I would assume, but things aren't looking as dire now as they appeared just a short while ago...

We all know that Utah, USC and UCLA will be picked ahead of us in the preseason but maybe we won't be too far behind those teams, in terms of talent and experience, as the season progresses...

However, we still have the sustainability of success question staring us in the face, after this next season, unless a roster composed basically of "our kind of guys" can be coached up enough to win consistently or will a limited roster composed of transfers be enough to sustain it..??

Again, where do you stand on this matter..??

Happy Mother's Day to all those moms out there in the Sun Devil nation...:)

G'day Mates and Go Devils!!!
