Mornin Mates...
Today's Topic = Bottoming Out
Sun Devil basketball is now near the bottom of the Big-12 standings and will not be going anywhere like March Madness in Bobby's tenth season at ASU...
The Iowa St coach, TJ Otzelberger (47), who is in his fourth season there, has already taken the Cyclones to two Sweet 16 finishes and may end up winning the conference this year with his team that is ranked third in the country...
He was an assistant at Iowa St a couple of different times in the past before taking the head coaching position at South Dakota St, where he excelled in three years there, before the current AU AD Desiree' Reed-Francois hired him to coach UNLV because she was seeking a "laser focused" coach...
But, when Iowa St fired its coach, Steve Prohm, who TJO had been an assistant to in the past, Otzelberger was hired to coach the Cyclones despite only having a pretty pedestrian record at UNLV...
So, TJO had Iowa St roots and showed some promise as a head coach and now has the school on a championship type level if it continues...
He is "laser focused" but is that enough to sustain success in this New Age of portal and NIL college athletics..??
And, does Iowa St have a lot of resources that ASU doesn't have in a Phoenix metro-area of around 5 million people..??
I know down here in Geezerville that there are a lot of Iowans here for the winter and I'm sure the same is true up there in the Valley...
Moving on to the ladies Sun Devil basketball program that is 8-13 and 2-7 in conference under Natasha Adair in her third season at ASU...
Looks like another coach that won't be elevating her program at ASU, although I'm sure as a person that she is wonderful and will have her women graduate, if nothing else, at ASU...
So, are there just too many other things to do in the Valley during winter than to have basketball programs that thrive at ASU..??
In any event, I sure hope and trust that Graham Rossini will be "laser focused" about improving our basketball programs moving forward...
Somehow, ASU got it done in football by hiring a "laser focused" coach with high energy, passion, teaching and leadership qualities that have dug us out of a deep hole...
All I know is that this is No Country For Old Men in the New Age of college athletics...
Or for coaches that have reached their levels of incompetence per the Peter Principle...
Anyway, I sure don't have any answers as to why we can't do better in basketball at ASU...
How about you..??
G'day Mates and Go Devils!!!
