Today's Topic = March Blandness
I've watched a couple of tournament games but it's not like it used to be when I was younger...
I guess if our BB program was anywhere like the Cats program it would be different as they are always in the tournament...
I'll be rooting for the Ducks later today when they face the Cats in Seattle...
I'd rather be rooting for our Devils and, maybe, our new ladies BB coach, Molly Miller, will be able to get us to their NCAA tournament on a regular basis in the not too distant future...
I got a kick out of reading about how the Cats ladies coach, Adia Barnes, who make over $1M a year, said that after they didn't make the tournament this year, that her team just wasn't in to it in the WBIT...
I can relate to that as an ASU fan watching the Dance each year, while our Devils are either staying home or playing in something called the Crown Invitational Tournament...
There's nothing wrong with playing a tournament in Las Vegas in November but not the end of March during the real tournament happening elsewhere across the country...
It will be interesting to see if the Sun Devils hearts and minds are in this upcoming tournament or not...
At least hockey made it to the Frozen Face-Off where they didn't quite have enough talent to prevail against Denver...
And, our baseball program just seems to be treading water under Willie as they look pretty good one day but pretty bad the next day...
What I'll be looking forward to in the near future is what sort of support Molly will get from ASU moving forward...
For her new job at ASU will coincide with the upcoming NCAA settlement where schools like ASU will have around $20M to split up between their sports...
Many schools are talking about a split of the money that will look like this...75% to football...15% to men's basketball, which means there will be 24 Sun Devil sports splitting the remaining 10% or thereabouts...
And, that includes our ladies BB team that will now feature MM as our new coach and that program traditionally loses millions of dollars a year, if I'm not mistaken...
So, how is our athletic dept brain trust going to give her the resources she will need to elevate our program..??
At least the women will share $15M this year for participating in their NCAA tournament or about $113K per unit related to 132 overall units in the tournament...
Of course, on the men's side of March Madness, they get about $2M per unit for their tournament participation...
Now, if our men were getting $1M for participating in the Crown Tournament, our participation in it might make a little sense to me...
But, heck, I'm just another dumb Sun Devil fan that is suffering from March Blandness and I'm hopeful that this March Blandness may be on the way out once Molly gets her program going...
And, that after next season, Rossini can do the same for our men's BB program in order to finally elevate it but we'll see...
Well, later in the day, go Ducks when they face the Cats and go Devils baseball against the Jayhawks, as losing a series to them would stink...
I think its time for me to take a walk and get some sunshine on this nice spring day in the desert...
