Mornin Mates...
Today's Topic = Just Out Of Curiosity
What first comes to mind around the country when people think of ASU..??
1) that it is the New American University
2) it leads the nation in innovation
3) that it's really big
4) it has a great engineering program
5) it is home to Sun Devil athletics
I would imagine that almost anyone around the country would answer #5 because athletics is the neon light flashing at the school's front door related to public attention and recognition...
Of course, we are talking about the country's popular culture here and not some professor from someplace who admires the school's efforts at sustainability...
And, in terms of personalities who would first come to mind when thinking about ASU..??
1) President Crow
2) Nancy Gonzales, the Provost of ASU
3) Kyle Squires, the Dean of the Ira Fulton School of Engineering
4) Graham Rossini, the school's Athletic Director
5) Kenny Dillingham, the school's head football coach
Relatedly, what is the University of Colorado best known for these days..??
It's close to Golden, Colorado where Coors beer is brewed...
Or, might it be for its head football coach, Deion "Prime Time" Sanders, who might now be as well known as Coors beer throughout the country...
And, what about our rivals down south...what would the popular culture think about that school..??
Might it have something to do with basketball and having an elite program that is always a well known commodity during each BB season and something called March Madness..??
So, whether it comes down to a school's identity or some of its key personalities, isn't sports in the forefront of that identity unless its a school in the Ivy League or something like that...
Duke has a sterling academic recognition but wouldn't most people mention their elite basketball program when asked what they are known for or famous for, etc..??
So, if a schools identity is inextricably tied to its athletic dept, especially in P-4 conferences, what should Rossini be doing for Sun Devil athletics to enhance our brand..??
Or, is he, in your opinion, doing everything he could possibly be doing to grow our reputation as a great school for athletics..??
G'day Mates and Go Devils!!!
