Since Jeff Capel is part of the Team USA coaching staff, due to the fact that Mike Krzyzewski is its head
coach, and the fact that Jerry Colangelo is the Managing Director of USA
Basketball, I made some inquiries this morning, I made some inquiries this
morning on this angle and was able to independently confirm the following:
As we know, Ray Anderson is doing the leg work on this head coaching search and not using a firm. Thus, he
is working his network of contacts and Jerry Colangelo is one of them. Colangelo's
familiarity with Capel is what started the balling rolling here in terms of Capel
being a candidate for the ASU job.
What is interesting in all of this, is that you would think Colangelo would be at odds with ASU for two
reasons.
First, he's big supporter of Grand Canyon University and was directly responsible for the hiring of Dan Majerle
as their basketball head coach. We all know about the statement ASU's President
Dr. Michael Crow has made in the past about that school, and how this has turned
into a "cold war" of sorts between the schools. So good to see that this wasn't
a sticking point and that Colangelo is aiding ASU.
Second of all, and this could have been even a bigger issue. The project to move the USA Basketball headquarters
to ASU's campus' property on Mill and University has stalled while some project
issues still need to be ironed out. This project isn't dead by any means, and
again Colangelo's involvement with Capel candidacy can only help get this
project moving in the right direction.
We mentioned many times in the past, that USA Basketball's headquarters moving to Tempe can be a huge
recruiting advantage for ASU, as every year you will have some of the prime
prospects in the country train with the USA Basketball's youth teams less than
a mile away from campus and the accessibility the ASU staff would have to them
in terms of unofficial visits and invaluable face time would be tremendous.
And would be quite the nice byproduct to a Jeff Capel hiring.
