TEMPE, Ariz. – Arizona State University and Sun Devil Athletics have announced the restructuring of "The Inferno" student section for the 2018 football season and beyond. After utilizing the double inferno for the past two seasons, student seating will transition back to the south side of the stadium at the request of Sun Devil students.
Over the last two years, students expressed a preference of sitting together and not separated into sections across from one another. This was confirmed throughout the 2017 season as mobile ticketing demonstrated the vast discrepancy between south and north seat selections.
"We recognize the impact our student body has on every athletic event, especially The Inferno at Sun Devil Stadium, so finding a way to strategically seat them and accommodate their request was very important to us," said Vice President for University Athletics and Athletic Director Ray Anderson.
Moving the Inferno to the south side also provides closer proximity for students coming from campus, a full view of the north videoboard, and the easiest access to the student concession stands located beneath the south end zone seating area.
"After two years of the split student sections, we listened to the requests and actions of the student body and decided to make a switch back to the old framework of one unified student section," said Senior Vice President of Educational Outreach and Student Services James Rund.
With the addition of several sections to the student seating in the south, Sun Devil Athletics has expanded the student section capacity and has the ability to place all students into one portion of the stadium for an enhanced gameday experience. The Sun Devil band will remain in the north side of the stadium.
With the relocation of the students, fans now have access to lower level end zone seating in the north above Tillman Tunnel and the Tillman Statue. ADA seating in the South East of the stadium will remain available to the general public.
