Thursday’s Practice Report

Weatherwise spring practices in March have run from warm to pleasantly comfortable to chilly, and today's session was definitely the latter. At the same time maybe it was that classic football weather that was needed for the Sun Devils to pick up their performance especially in the enthusiasm and energy department from Tuesday’s session. And sure enough that's exactly what transpired today at the Bill Kajikawa field.

First group:

QB Trenton Bourguet

WR Chad Johnson Jr.
WR Xavier Guillory
WR Melquan Stovall
TE Jalin Conyers
TE Messiah Swinson (when they had just one tight end Cam Skattebo and DeCarlos Brooks split first team running back reps)

OL left to right: Isaia glass, Joey Ramos, Leif Fautanu, Max Iheanachor and Emmit Bohle.

As you can see some shuffling up front as Ramos moves from right to left guard, Iheanachor slides one spot from right tackle to right guard and Emmit Bohle who usually lines up at left tackle is now at right tackle.

In team tempo Bourguet had an incomplete pass thanks to pressure by EDGE Clayton Smith, and then he was sacked by linebacker Travion Brown. Those two plays though were followed up by a touchdown pass to Conyers who caught the ball in the corner of the end zone falling down (and this challenging type of reception has been the norm for the tight end). Bennett Meredith entered for snap at quarterback and found wide receiver Melquan Stovall for a score.

Second group:

QB Trenton Bourguet (stayed at quarterback)

WR Gio Sanders
WR Chand Johnson Jr.
WR Troy Omeire
WR Andre Johnson
TE Bryce Pierre

OL left to right: Ralph Frias, Matt Kategaris (walk-on), Ben Bray, Austin Barry, Emmit Bohle

Still in team tempo, Bourguet with a pair of touchdowns to tight ends Conyers and Bryce Pierre.

In the second team segment Bourguet had a near INT to safety Willie Harts and in the next snap rushed for a few yards. Skattebo with a medium yardage run and a later sees the pass to him snuffed out effectively by safety RJ Regan.

Meredith in the next series completed a pass to Shawn Charles but also has an incomplete pass. Then he was sacked by EDGE Elijah O’Neal and intercepted by cornerback Tarik Luckett.

Closing this ream segment Bourguet with two incomplete passes, one of them that was intended to Guillory was broken up by Jean Boyd Jr.. In between some short runs by both Skattebo and Brooks.

Last team segment of the day saw Meredith at first team, Ramos going back to right tackle, and Kategaris at left guard. We also see Gio Sanders starting at slot receiver as another change, although lately, him and Stovall have been rotating some here.

Meredith, who was having one of his better days today, despite some snafus earlier in the session, completes passes to Conyers and Sanders and was supported by some impressive rushing courtesy of Brooks, another player who stood out today in this side of the ball.

Quarterback Jacob Conover came in for the next series, second team offensive line gets another new look:

From left to right:, Colby Garvin, Austin Barry, Ben Bray, Danny Valenzuela and Ralph Frias.

Conover has one incomplete pass that hit a lineman and then had a completion to Chad Johnson Jr.

With thinner numbers at running back these days, we now see wide receiver Javen Jacobs lining up in the backfield. By and large, I have been impressed by what I saw today using his athleticism and agility to gain real estate. Let’s just say that it would be harder for him to get reps at wide receiver, and now along with being one of the main return guys on special teams, he can make contributions at running back, a role I expect him to remain until the end of spring.

Bourguet comes in next series and has a near INT by Travion Brown and an incomplete pass intended for Badger. This series ended with Skattebo stuffed on third down.

Next series Pyne comes in, has an incomplete pass off the fingers of Pierre, and then an INT by Jean Boyd II. He did complete a pass to Johnson Jr as well as Skattebo. Jacobs continued t shine here with one run moving he chains and a pitched ball from Pyne to gain a good chunk of yards.

Offensive line was really not doing Bourguet any favors, giving up another sack when he was at quarterback. Bourguet completes a pass to Pierre (perhaps his best session this spring) and the series ends with a keeper by Bourguet.

The first “Main Event” segment featured Cam Skattebo winning his rep versus Will Shaffer, a pass breakup by Shamari Simmons on a pass intended for Pierre. Bohle holding his own in pass block on Sam Benjamin as did Ramos on Brandon McElroy. Ro Torrence had a pass breakup on a ball intended for Badger.

Second “Main Event” segment had Bourguet with an incomplete pass that was tipped by Caleb McCullough, Bourguet running out of bounds just short of the end zone, followed up by a touchdown to Conyers in the corner of the end zone as the tight end is falling down.

In the 7-on-7 segment, Bourguet was 5-6 passing Looked the sharpest, and this got the most reps. Meredith was 3-3, Pyne was 2-3, and Rashada was 1-3. Xavion Alford and Boyd II has pass breakups in this portion of the practice.

Inside run really saw the group of running bacs generally stuffed by the defense or best case be able to have a few yards rushing each rep. Jacobs on one carry, showed his speed for good size run off tackle.

I saw Sanders for the first time in the spring, lining up as a punt returner.
