Tuesday’s Practice Report
Arizona State continued practicing inside the bubble on Tuesday, marking the fourth consecutive practice inside the Verde Dickey Dome for ASU. The Sun Devils were in shells – helmets and shoulder pads – once again. Head coach Herm Edwards mentioned Monday that many of the Sun Devils had accumulated “knicks and bruises,” and some guys would receive relief from padded practices because of that.

Offense

Here are Tuesday’s personnel notes:

Offensive lineman Ben Scott returned to action Tuesday after missing Monday’s practice.
Wide receiver Chad Johnson Jr. was seen working out on his own on the outdoor practice fields. Johnson Jr. has been hampered by a nagging turf toe injury on his right foot since the spring.
Wide receiver Johnny Wilson did not participate in practice again Tuesday. During Monday’s practice, Wilson did light sprints and some other non-contact drills on the sideline.

Other members of the Sun Devil offense not participating or in attendance Tuesday: WR Johnny Wilson, WR Chad Johnson Jr., WR Elijhah Badger (muscle beach participant), RB Deonce Elliott, RB Noah Vella, RB Jackson He (muscle beach participant), OL Ezra Dotson-Oyetade, OL Austin Barry, OL Henry Hattis.

The media was unable to see any team periods, so these lineups are not definitive.

First Team Offense

QB: Jayden Daniels

RB: Deamonte Trayanum

OL left to right: Kellen Diesch, LaDarius Henderson, Dohnovan West, Spencer Lovell, Ben Scott

WR: Geordon Porter

WR Bryan Thompson

TE/H: Case Hatch

TE: John Stivers

Running back Rachaad White split reps with Trayanum.

Tight end Jalin Conyers split reps with Stivers.

Wide receivers LV Bunkley-Shelton and Ricky Pearsall each saw reps with the first team.

Second-team offense

QB: Trenton Bourguet

RB: Daniyel Ngata

OL left to right: Isaia Glass, Armon Bethea, Jarrett Bell, Ben Bray, Sione Veikoso

WR: Andre Johnson

WR: Ricky Pearsall (slot)

WR: Lonyatta Alexander Jr.

TE: Jalin Conyers

Conyers took reps with both the 1’s and 2’s on Tuesday.

After stretching completed, Arizona State’s offense got to work with an 11-on-0 install of some of the offense schemes. After an early false start by Case Hatch derailed one play, offensive coordinator Zak Hill continued to install a variety of plays, showcasing the usual wide variety of formations and motions.

With Herm Edwards monitoring, graduate assistant Bobby Wade worked with the wide receivers on beating press coverage to begin positional drills. Wade utilized some giant red sticks to obstruct and slow down his wide receivers. After one rep, Edwards paused and chatted briefly with LV Bunkley-Shelton, giving the young receiver a piece of advice before sending him back to Wade.

While Wade worked meticulously with the ASU receivers, the always boisterous Mike Cavanaugh instructed the offensive line from across the bubble. The Sun Devil offensive line practiced run blocking, with Cavanaugh imploring his unit to “get off the ball” on the way to the second level of the defense. The limited positional drills the media was able to view Tuesday saw the ASU offensive line work more frequently as a unit than as individuals, with five-man run blocking schemes being taught by Cavanaugh.

A depleted running backs room for Shaun Aguano left the Sun Devils without nearly half of the group, but the dynamic trio of Rachaad White, DeaMonte Trayanum, and Daniyel Ngata each participated. The Sun Devil running backs worked individually on keeping their feet active to avoid being tripped while simultaneously keeping the ball held high and tight. Once individual drills were complete, Aguano’s group worked with some of the reserve quarterbacks on pass-catching drills.

As the media exited the bubble, the Sun Devils began work in the red zone during a team period. Most notably, Jalin Conyers was in with the first team in ASU’s red zone package. On the lone play to be viewed, Jayden Daniels completed a slant to Geordon Porter.

As the media left at the end of the final viewing period, we were able to briefly observe the start of the 11-on-11 session. The team began with red zone practice in the west end zone. Ed Woods started at the boundary and was replaced after one rep by Lucas.

Safety DeAndre Pierce stretched and did non-contact drills but was not in the starting lineup to begin the team period.

Jordan Clark was also dressed for practice but had a hoodie on under his jersey and wore street shoes. Timarcus Davis had a sleeve on his lower leg and did not participate in drills.

Omarr Norman-Lott was spotted at the muscle beach without a boot doing workouts and looked as he was moving around OK.

The defensive back group began wrap-up work following the warmup period. Each player started the drill from five yards out, engaged the tackling dummy head-on, then brought the dummy down sharply at an angle to the left.

Later, defensive backs coach Donnie Henderson had his players start at the baseline of the east side of the dome. They would run with their backs to the sideline while shadowing a player acting as a receiver until they were around 10 yards out. At this point, they looked back for the ball and tracked it into their hands. DJ Taylor and Jack Jones each showcased the impressive amount of air they could get in leaping for their passes.

The linebackers also began the day with wrap-up drills. Each player worked on refining their pursuit angles from five yards out and closing the gap between them and the ball carrier. They also worked with the sled during a portion of their positional work with the same concept in mind. Each player would engage the sled, shed the object, then eliminate the distance between them and the approaching ball carrier.

The defensive line worked with tackling dummies for most of the viewing period. Later, they practiced shifts and stunts as a unit, with half the group posing as offensive linemen. Travez Moore did his best Rachaad White impression as the running back during this drill.
