Please don’t speculate on the message board about any players that may or may not be available. Thank you for your understanding.

Offensive report by Caleb

Tuesday's practice was the first session open to the media after last Saturday night's loss to Oklahoma State. The practice conditions were fair as it was very overcast with a hint of humidity. The players were in full pads as they got into their stretch lines.

The team got into a special teams period, and this was a unit that struggled on Saturday, especially in the punting department. In this segment, though, field goals were the emphasis. Starting at about 35 yards out, Dario Longhetto was 2-2. They moved back, setting up a kick from about 45 yards which was also made. Three kicks followed from around the 40-yard range, and they were converted successfully too.

After the special teams period, the offensive line was getting the blood flowing by getting out of their stance, and striking a weighted ball that another lineman was holding. With all of the rotation coming at different positions, this will be an interesting group to keep an eye on. This portion, nonetheless, was very quick before going into a different team tempo period.

Today's tempo period was a little different, it saw some different themes here carried out through the rest of the practice. Tempo wise, most of the snaps were run on air (no defenders) as today, Drew Pyne was fully active in practice for the first time since his injury happened a month ago to the day at Camp Tontozona. He did look sharp with some of his throws late in practice. Running on air seemed to put the emphasis on rhythm and working fast. As soon as the whistle blew, the ball was placed for the next play.

Team segments in general, on both sides of the ball had the 1’s and 2’s going up against the scout team, and this was done due to the injuries that on the offensive line that Dillingham discussed yesterday. Speaking about scout teams, Sophomore wide receiver Troy Omeire, who didn't play in the Oklahoma State game, but was running with the 2's the entire preseason and the first week of the season was on the scout team today. Dillingham said that this was done so he could get some reps.

In the tempo period, a note was running back Tevin White taking a hefty amount of snaps as this is a pattern we saw last week, and he did play late in the game against Oklahoma State. White looks to complement the downhill approach of Cam Skattebo and DeCarlos Brooks, similar to Kyson Brown in the sense that they look a little faster or shiftier.

During the second team tempo period we saw a lot of runs with the offensive line creating good holes for Skattebo and White especially. Portions toward the end of a period like this saw the team run some plays on air. This looked to be again for rhythmic reasons and to master plays they went over in an install.

The offense went into an individual drill portion of practice. Tight ends went into their usual blocking drills on a sled as assistant coach Jason Mohns emphasized connection in the hips. Looking over at the quarterbacks and wide receivers running routes, routes looked good as usual, with some good balls being thrown. The downside here was that there were a couple of balls underthrown, which had receivers having to come back to the ball.

There was a second special teams period that followed individual drills, which saw the punt team come out. The bottom line, it still isn't working as much as we’ve seen Josh Carlson kick. There were some good punts but also some short ones. After one came off the side of the foot, backup placekicker Ian Hershey came in and booted some before Charlie Ragle coached him up.

Looking back at the offensive line, with Emmit Bohle’s season ending injury (lower leg), Max Iheanachor has stepped in at right tackle as he did early in the game last week. Iheanachor hasn't played football for as many years as his peers, and with that was getting mentored very heavily today. Joey Ramos was observed stepping up as a leader today on a group that can definitely use a pick me up.

Summarizing a lot of the team portions before some seven-on-seven, the quarterbacks looked a lot more efficient than the underthrown balls earlier. As seen in previous practices, there was a good amount of rotation between running backs and linemen. Overall nonetheless, efficiency was key throughout the latter half of practice as there were a lot of quicker completions along with the complimentary run game.

A lot of team segments followed with the same rotation occurring and efficiency in place. A lot of receivers were getting involved, such as Kaleb Black, Shawn Charles, Andre Johnson and tight end Ryan Morgan. Charles in particular, is really moving up the ranks in recent weeks.

Before practice officially ended, the team gathered to watch Longhetto put some kicks up. He was good from 30, and about 45. One was missed from about 40. Carlson had two punts, the first being off the side of the foot again, while the second was much better. Those kicks were the conclusion of practice.
