No. 20 Arizona State football returned to the fields for their first practice since defeating then No. 15 California on the road Friday night. Here are our observations from the media viewing period.

LOCATION: Kajikawa Practice Fields -- outdoors

ATTIRE: Shells

MEDIA AVAILABILITY: 20 minutes

GREEN NON-CONTACT JERSEYS: LB Stanley Lambert, S Cam Phillips

*Phillips dislocated his elbow late in the loss to Colorado, an injury with a 4-6 week recovery timetable. He is just beginning week two of that process.

PERSONNEL NOTES

  • True freshman safety Willie Harts, who started in place of the injured Phillips Friday night, was seen grabbing his right shoulder and exiting practice during the first special teams period. The training staff took off his jersey and pads to tend to the shoulder, and eventually DC Danny Gonzales walked over to check in on the situation. We will provide updates as we get them.

  • MUSCLE BEACH- CB Kobe Williams, LB Tyler Johnson, CB Jordan Clark, K Brandon Ruiz

  • Senior RT Steve Miller was at practice and stretched, but was not in uniform and the o-linemen practiced block formations before practice. Senior Roy Hemsley stepped in in his place.

  • Senior center Cade Cote as well as redshirt freshman OL Jarrett Bell were in full uniform, and shadowed the first unit with the second-team guys in that pre-practice session. It would be an early return for Cote to come back against WSU on 10/12, making it unlikely but impossible to rule out.

  • WR Frank Darby was seen getting his right elbow pretty heavily taped up on the field prior to practice

  • Dillon Sterling-Cole and Ethan Long practiced with special teams during punt and kickoff returns, while QB’s Jayden Daniels and Joey Yellen were throwing on the other field

Other Notes & Quotes:

-- Kickoff & Punt Returners: Brandon Aiyuk, Jack Jones, Brandon Pierce

-- Sophomore Cristian Zendejas went 1-for-4 on field goals from 45 yards out. The first miss was a bad hold, as one of the coaches said aloud- not sure about the others. They moved it in and he made a 40-yarder before the team broke into stretches

-- Herm Edwards was heard talking to receivers Kyle Williams and Frank Darby in a hilarious conversation about one of his noted very few experiences getting in a fight during a game. “You guys do all this talking today, you’ll be talking for 30 minutes. Back in my day…’BOOM,’ punch the guy right in the face.”

-- “Sit on the goal-line, he’s probably going to kick it short today,” special teams coordinator and associate head coach Shawn Slocum told Aiyuk before he returned his first kickoff from true freshman Josh Plaster.

-- AD Ray Anderson and senior AD Jean Boyd were spotted in attendance
