Sorry for sending this later than usual, here it is:

ASU Football is back with the first practice of the spring, taking to the Kajikawa Practice Facility on a beautiful Tuesday afternoon. The media viewing period was expanded from the first two periods of practice to a full hour.

Attendance:

Several players were not dressed for the first spring practice. Those include WR LV Bunkley-Shelton, OL Ben Bray and OL Ralph Frias.

Offensive lineman Sione Viesko was under the weather but should be back Thursday. Didn't see TE Jake Ray ut he's been out of action literally the entire of last season due to injury.

As posted in another thread OL's Roman Dewys and Triston Miller are no longer on the team. Miller retired medically and it's unknown why DeWys is no longer with the team although he was berries pretty deep in the depth chart and also wasn't at numerous practices in 2021.

Frias is to be evaluated in May to determine his playing status. He has been sidelined due to a non-football injury.

Positional Drills

Practice began with various installs and individual group work ahead of the pre-practice stretch. The offensive line and running backs worked on outside zone plays with the quarterbacks, while the receivers warmed up with a drill issued by wide receivers coach Bobby Wade. They later joined the mix and worked on wide receiver bubble screens, emphasizing getting the offensive linemen downfield to pick up blocks.

Just before team stretch, all five rostered quarterbacks linked up with an offensive lineman and practiced snaps and handoffs. With little depth beyond Scott and Dotson-Oyetade at center, some interesting alternatives stepped up, including Barry, Henderson and Martinez. Henderson laughed when he snapped one straight into the feet of freshman quarterback Bennett Meredith.

Following team stretch, the groups broke back up into individual units. The offensive line stayed at their end of the field and split up into two groups. All players to the left side of the offensive line worked with Cavanaugh, while the right-side guys worked with the offensive line assistant. They practiced double teams and picking up linebackers at the next level.

Meanwhile, the skill players divvied up into position groups and participated in a three-drill ball security rotation. One station required stiff-arming three pads, another was movement-focused as the players chopped their feet around a series of cones while they were poked and prodded and the third required a reception before rushing through a tunnel of players trying to poke the ball free.

Next, the quarterbacks and running backs got together to work on handoffs, a perfect matchup for the five QBs and RBs to pair up and work with each other.

The tight ends worked with tight end coach Juston Wood on various forms of blocking, pushing their coaches holding medicine balls and pads from a three-point stance. They also simulated pulling scenarios, emphasizing their efforts of getting downhill to the block. Even without 6-foot-7 Curtis Hodges, this tight end group with transfers Messiah Swinson, Bryce Pierre, and freshman signee Jacob Newell who will arrive in the summer, is very large in size.

This will come in handy to account for the lack of height in the receiver room, who went through a series of drills that emphasized watching the ball and releasing off the line.

The quarterbacks worked on their throws, passing the pigskin over a tall net to an assistant standing roughly 10-15 yards away. Bourguet looked smooth as silk, with excellent touch. Tyson underthrew the ball a little bit at first but found his touch and nailed every throw afterward. Daylin McLemore and Finn Collins performed well. Meredith must’ve been eager for this drill, overthrowing the assistant several times with superior zip, but minimal touch on his passes.

In routes-on-air, it was much of the same. Bourguet completed his passes and found his targets with ease. Tyson underthrew one receiver but completed an excellent ball over the top to Johnson Jr. to redeem himself.

The linemen and running backs worked on pass protection during this time with running backs coach Shaun Aguano presiding.

During team period, the young offensive line had a hard time protecting Bourguet, allowing a sack on the second play. Ngata scampered for an 8–10-yard gain on the first play. Tyson nearly completed a large gain on a pass to Andre Johnson, but the ball was slightly underthrown and the pass was well-defended.
