Today’s scrimmage would most likely be the last inner squad scrimmage as Arizona State shifts its focus for its season opener versus Southern Utah. The scrimmage was moved last minute to Mountain America Stadium after a rainy night presumably forced the move from the Bill Kajikawa Practice Field.

Following the stretch lines, assistant head coach Charlie Ragle went through almost every special teams set. Punt, kickoff and field goals against scout teams got the blood flowing before the team got into individual drills.

Individual drills were short and sweet today, much like last Saturday’s scrimmage at Camp T. The offensive line got their feet driving and hand working. Running backs and receivers got their hands warmed up, with the running backs eventually joining linebackers in pass protection drills. The team then came together for the first part of the scrimmage.

Much like last Saturday, the team started in a two-point conversion setup. Trenton Bourguet started the day off with the first teamers. Right off the bat, Bourguet found Bryce Pierre in the back of the endzone for a conversion. A ball fell incomplete to Cam Skattebo, although open before Bourguet almost threw a pick to Jordan Clark. Jaden Rashada came in as receivers changed but overthrew a receiver on the left side.

Bourguet came back in with the two’s, again, scoring quickly with a back pylon throw to Troy Omiere, someone who has shown true growth in the last couple of practices. An incompletion to Andre Johnson was followed by a one-handed grab score by Messiah Swinson on the goal line. Three total touchdowns from Bourguet in this period.

To end the period, Rashada had two incompletions. One was broken up, while another was overthrown at the back pylon.

Series teamwork, simulating game-like play, followed for the rest of the time. The second team started with Bourguet behind center. A quick drive began with a run by Kyson Brown for a short gain. A deeper ball was broken up intended for Max Ware. A completion for no gain to Messiah Swinson set up a long field goal for Ian Hershey that was short.

Rashada came in with the one’s, this drive having Bram Walden in for Isaia Glass at left tackle. DeCarlos Brooks and the line set up a huge run making it first and goal. No gain for Brooks, a dropped touchdown by Xavier Guillory, and a small gain by Skattebo set up a Dario Longhetto field goal try. This try would be good.

Emmit Bohle commented on the running game’s improvements and big plays.

“We’re just trying to do our job,” Bohle said. “We’re just trying to get on the same page, get everyone on the same page. Trying to figure out where the ball is supposed to hit, and really figure out and master our scheme so we can hit those big run plays.”

Kickoffs at the beginning followed every drive but switched up towards the end. This drive, led by Bourguet, started on their own 4-yard line. The drive once again was a three-and-out, with the first throw being incomplete. Offsides on the defense was called but after a scramble. The next two plays were not better, as a ball went to the dirt, and miscommunication followed. The group punted after.

Rashada came in with the first team. Walden, again was at left tackle. To start, Rashada targeted Melquan Stovall twice, with the latter being complete. Another incompletion was followed by a Skattebo run for a first down. Three straight runs took place, with the first being a scramble by Rashada and the last being by Brooks moving the chains on fourth down. Another big run for the offense. Rashada scrambled again before finding Elijhah Badger for a touchdown.

There were many of third-team reps, with Jacob Conover getting a lot of throws. Summarized, Conover went 6 of 12 passing with a touchdown in three drives, the lone score being completed downfield to Shawn Charles. Conover also favored Korbin Hendrix and Max Ware on the drives.

Rashada and Bourguet had short drives after Conover’s first. Rashada went 1 of 3, with the lone completion being to Stovall. A false start accompanied this drive. The drive ended on a fourth-down sack. Bourguet followed with a 1 of 4 series. The lone completion was to Kaleb Black, but this drive ended on a back foot throw picked off on second down.

Each quarterback went back-to-back series again. Rashada, with the first team, began with a long scramble and then threw what looked like an errant ball but was caught by Badger. The drive would then stall with a false start, and Rashada was almost picked off by Xavion Alford to end that drive.

Bourguet enters with the second team. He had a ball tipped and was hit while he threw before completing a ball on the next play to Black for a first down. Back-to-back throws to Hendrix went for first downs. Messiah Swinson ended up catching a touchdown over the middle as the tight ends were very active today and collectively had arguably their best day in camp.

“I really think we excelled today,” Swinson said. “I think we took advantage of all the reps that were given to us. We took advantage of the situations they put us in”.

In the last drive for either the first team or second team, Rashada came in and had two incompletions before having a fresh set of downs. Rashada then scrambled for a first down. Brown got the ball twice for limited gains on the ground as Omiere had a ball overthrown to him on the next play. The drive ended, though, on a long TD run after a catch by George Hart III. A better day for the offense moving forward, as they have struggled for most of camp.

When it comes to starting quarterback role, and with no timetable for Drew Pyne’s return from a torn hamstring, Bourguet looks to still be in the driver’s seat, but Rashada’s increased reps have built some confidence in himself and the staff making this battle a competitive one.
