Per ASU's instructions, we cannot list the two-deep observed

Wednesday morning's practice saw the ASU football team in just shorts as the Arizona days also started to cool down. The energy to start practice was high, with players dancing and trying to stay loose, which was a recurring theme throughout practice. As the morning stretch broke, the team went into their usual special teams’.

Instead of the field goal team coming out, today's first period consisted of the punt team coming on. Like yesterday, Josh Carlson took most of the kicks to start. Carlson, just based off look, looks more comfortable punting as he had a much more consistent day compared to yesterday. Carlson did have one booming punt that had some great hang time. Walk-on Ian Hershey also got some reps today but was a bit more inconsistent than Carlson.

The ball security period was announced over the loudspeaker, but both the offense and defense both got into their respective drills.

For the offense, Kenny Dillingham’s offense got into an installation period going over their assignments and walking through the game plan. On the defensive side, the defensive line got to work also working on their game plan stunt and formations-wise.

After the time apart, each side of the ball went into their individual drills for the day. Starting with defensive backs, defensive back Macen Williams who has missed time with injury was a full participant today as he was yesterday. In a bit of a change, defensive backs worked more on their run fits as the run game for Utah last week was very successful and they will face perhaps an even better ground attack by UCLA.

Linebackers led by Tre Brown worked on a lot of leverage positioning today. Again, the struggle to stop the rush against Utah was real, and with UCLA having quarterback uncertainty this weekend, UCLA head coach Chip Kelly will probably try to run the ball early and often. Linebackers practiced lowering their shoulder driving through a runner.

Moving fields to the offense, wide receivers got to work right away with the quarterbacks as Trenton Bourguet was throwing to them. Routes looked sharp as Dillingham would adjust as needed. Wide receiver Elijhah Badger led the group as like mentioned yesterday, young receivers like Kaleb Black and Jordyn Tyson continue to try and make the best of their reps behind Troy Omeire or Melquan Stovall.

Looking at the tight ends, Jalin Conyers was leading the group today as assistant coach Jason Mohns had the group practicing moving off defenders when running routes. Bryce Pierre, Messiah Swinson, and Ryan Morgan all closely followed as this group is arguably the deepest and healthiest group headed to Pasadena.

The team would then get into their second special teams’ period of the day. Assistant coach Charlie Ragle got the punt return team set as the team somewhat would jog-through the returns. Later, Ragle set up the kickoff return as Badger and Stovall went through full-speed returns as the return did block well today.

Both sides of the ball would go into their respective team segments for the majority of the rest of practice. For the defense, though, their seven-on-seven time saw quarterback Jaden Rashada throwing to the scout team. Rashada had a couple of interceptions to safety Shamari Simmons and defensive back Alphonso Taylor.

During more of the defensive team periods before the end of practice, Ragle was yelling, “It’s the details, the little f****ing details”, profusely as the defense looks to bounce back this week.

For the offense as they wrapped up, it was noticed that offensive lineman Max Iheanachor was back participating in position/team repetitions, as his possible return would add much needed depth at the tackle position, as he took first team reps at both tackle spots. Cade Briggs was taking some left tackle reps as well.

As mentioned earlier, the energy all day was much higher from the entire team as it seems the Utah loss is behind them. ASU leaves to Los Angeles on Friday as the entire team has emphasized bouncing back against the Bruins on Saturday.
