ASU has four so far, further contributing to the Big 12's No. 1 2025 recruiting class

Compared to the rest of the returning Big 12 teams, Oklahoma State, a team that ASU played in the last two years, is the program the Sun Devils are most familiar with. Especially with how well he has recruited this off-season?

Apparently Oregon and Oregon St. losses in Baseball yesterday drew the curtains to P12 play forever. Or forever as we knew it anyways.
Feels like there should be a lowering of the flag with TAPS playing in the background.

Today's Topic = Too Pessimistic ?

That's what I'm asking myself this fine morning in the desert regarding our upcoming Sun Devil football and basketball seasons...

If you remember, I was very optimistic about last football season since we had a new, young, genius coach, a rebuilt roster and eight home games, etc....

Boy was I wrong, since we only won three games, for the second year in a row, and we weren't even competitive against Utah, Oregon and UA...

The media is already building a case for another dreadful ASU season that is just reinforcing my pessimism...

On3 recently had an online article "Predicting Ceiling, Floor for ASU in 2024" and the picture it painted wasn't pretty...

They had one of their analysts and a guy from Big 12 radio tell us that the Floor = 2-10 record, while the Ceiling = 5-7 record...

They based their analysis on these three key things...1) continuing roster overhaul..2) dicey QB situation...3) tough schedule that includes all of the top teams in the Big 12 and a non-conference slate that doesn't have any cream puffs on it...

Additionally, Lindy's Sports preseason magazine has us only winning three games while finishing 15th in the 16 team Big 12, only ahead of Cincinnati...

They pick Oklahoma St to finish first followed by Utah, Kansas, K-State and UA and we don't miss any of those teams...

They also have Wyoming finishing 7th in the MWC, MIss St finishing 15th in the SEC, and Texas St finishing first in the Sun Belt West Division...

Wyoming has been bowl eligible for seven straight years but has a new coach, while Miss St also has a new coach but one who doesn't have the talent of top SEC teams, and Texas State has a veteran team with a top flight QB transfer running their offense...

I think they make some good, valid points about our opponents but are they discounting the Devils too much in their analysis of our potential..??

Is only five wins the true ceiling for this team..??

Changing sports for the moment, what about our men's BB team under Bobby Hurley...will his team be seen too pessimistically by the preseason media..??

The Athletic wonders if fans will not recognize the promise of a star center like Jayden Quaintance who they think may be wearing superman's cape as a Sun Devil this season...

Doug Haller thinks maybe so in his Athletic article "The promise of five star center Jayden Q and how he can help elevate ASU"...

The kid is only 16 and doesn't lift weights but has no peers in what he brings to the game for someone his age according to the article...

And, he wonders what will happen when Bobby starts developing him to help him reach his full NBA potential...

Some may perceive that as a "red flag" but I don't want to digress with any negativity, since the article is so upbeat about Bobby and his recruiting class that features Q, etc...

In conclusion, I think our football ceiling may be more in the neighborhood of six or seven wins, if some pieces fall in place for Dilly and his team...

And, if "Q" is as good as advertised, our BB team, under Bobby, may surprise everyone with lots of wins this next season, our first in the Big 12...

Is it possible that our football team can win enough games to go bowling this year and will our BB team win enough to make March Madness next year..??

Are those aspirations too optimistic or not in your opinion..??

At the very least, we don't have the NCAA hanging over our football heads these days and both Dilly and Bobby appear to have recruited really well during their respective off-seasons...

My sources for what follows are an article by Jon Wilner "Yormark to Regents: Invest in ASU and UA" and an article in today's Daily Star Sports Section by Michael Lev "Big 12 Commish: 'Reset is Coming"...

Yesterday our Big 12 commissioner addressed the Arizona Board of Regents regarding his vision and thoughts for the expanded Big 12, that now includes the Four Corner schools, with an emphasis on ASU and UA, since he was addressing the state's regents...

The meeting was held at the Fulton Center on the ASU campus and included both presidents Crow and Robbins and their schools ADs Graham Rossini and Desiree Reed-Francois...

Yormark pointed out that "athletics drives enrollment and philanthropy" so it's very important for each school to "invest" in their athletic depts and student-athletes...

He also pointed out that given all of the change coming about through anti-trust lawsuits, the transfer portal and the NIL reality, that nothing is going to come easily and those will be huge challenges for each school to address...

This will lead to revenue sharing and to all of the issues related to how this is done, etc...

Regent treasurer - Lyndel Manson - who ran cross country in college, had some problems with this new student-athlete reality as she sees it potentially as "double-dipping"...

Yormark said that he had talked to one AD who said his school would reduce the food allotment for athletes once revenue sharing kicks in...

Both ADs said that their mission is still to focus on the student part of the equation and not compromise education for athletics...

The UA AD said that she was concerned that this new reality that will cause a 'reset' (Yormark's term) in the way college athletics is administered if it is too focused on a few rather than on the whole...

There seemed to be a general agreement that sports at both schools was very important that required a lot of financial support and investment but not at the expense of everything else (education)...

Wilner summed it up thusly..."Until the NCAA bargains collectively with a players union, cost control in college athletics is merely a dream"...

What I like about Yormark is that he really gets it, IMHO, and will undoubtedly provide the leadership this conference needs in order to thrive and survive in this age of change and chaos in college athletics...

If our presidents and athletic departments follow his lead regarding college athletics we will do fine, IMHO...

Invest or perish...Go Big 12 and Go Devils!!!

First Graham Rossini hire

Thankfully, all is well here now, but it was like a Big 12 "tornado alley" day here in my parts. We got hit by tornadoes in Maryland and thankfully my mom (age 90), made it thru in ok....in Montgomery County outside of DC, as did I....north in Frederick Co. Just wanted to let my fellow Huddle brothers and sisters know that life's realities and nature has a way of bringing all things into perspective. AS ALWAYS.......GO SUN DEVILS!

Probably a lot of Suns fans on here. But being a Laker fan I’m curious how good of a coach he is. All I know is that he is Dan Hurleys brother. 😅

The Sun Devils, who have the top-rated 2025 recruiting class in the Big 12, are scheduled to host double-digit visitors this weekend. The list of players features some of its highest-rated pledges, a couple of prospects who are expected to commit in the very near future and some intriguing recruits who are high on Arizona State's list in their respective positions.
