January 3rd Recruiting Snapshot

January 3rd Recruiting Snapshot

We may be still over a week away from the dead period ending, but also just under a month before signing day. With several visits scheduled over the next few weeks, let’s take a look at how Arizona State is currently standing with its viable prospects at the various positions and how close are the Sun Devils to fulfilling their remaining needs in this 2017 recruiting class

We expect ASU to sign in the range of 22-23 players, and much like previous classes it’s possible that the 2017 class won’t reach that number until a few months following February’s National Letter of Intent day, as the Sun Devils try and add transfers from other programs.

Therefore, with presently 13 total pledges on board, we could very see ASU add no more than ten signees between today and February 1st, 2017 and if needed survey the market for available transfers.

The approach is no different than last year’s class. ASU won’t fill this 2017 recruiting class with “warm bodies” just to get to 25 signees on NLI day. In order to reach that number of signees it would have to literally hit on each and every high caliber target on its board and the law of averages, if you will, is making that unlikely to happen.

Furthermore, to be able and have a class that’s 25 large ASU would have to have a higher than normal rate of attrition with its current players, another improbable factor in play.

ASU cannot count any mid-year signees back to the 2016 class. Thus, the 2017 class cannot exceed 25 players.

The National Letter of Intent day period for mid-year transfers began on December 14th, 2016 and runs through January 15th, 2017.

The National Letter of Intent day period for all other prospects is on February 1st, 2017 (aka signing day) and runs through April 15th, 2017.

The commit list can be found here

The recruiting calendar can be found here (the recruiting dead period runs from December 12th through January 11th).

Let’s go position by position and see who is committed, and who are the Sun Devils’ viable prospects:

Quarterback

2017 Class Commits: Ryan Kelley, Blake Barnett (mid-year transfer)

Viable Prospects

None. Since both commits are expected to honor their pledge as well as the fact that ASU has four scholarship signal-callers returning, the Sun Devils will not pursue any other players at this position.

Running Backs

2017 Class Commits: Trelon Smith

Viable Prospects (ASU expected to sign no more than 2 running backs total)

Eno Benjamin – if you recall the four-star prospect had a surprise unofficial visit to Tempe right before the recruiting dead period begun. In my opinion, a commitment to ASU should probably come as no surprise as the Sun Devils are squarely in the driver’s seat. Benjamin, a high school mid-year transfer, is scheduled to announce at the Army All-American game on January 7th, 2017. Since he’s a mid-year transfer he will be eligible to enroll in the spring at the school of his choice.

Stephen Carr - currently the USC commit is scheduled to visit Tempe on January 13th. His chances of decommiting to any school are seemingly low and it remains to be seen if a Benjamin commitment doesn’t cancel this visit.

Offensive Line

2017 Class Commits: Corey Stephens

Viable Prospects (ASU expected to sign no more than 3 linemen total)

Austin Jackson – Nothing has really changed since our last snapshot on the Phoenix North Canyon standout. We don’t expect him to make an announcement until later this month, and apparently, this still comes down to an ASU-USC battle. Washington could be the dark horse in this race. Jackson is one that is known to always keep his cards close to the vest; it’s hard to get a good read on which school may actually have the upper hand. If he were to officially visit the Trojans this month (and which we fully expect) and delay his decision closer and closer to signing day, there is a very good chance Jackson won’t stay home.

George Moore – ever since his decommitment from Washington State, the junior college lineman has been receiving several offers. The fact that ASU offered even before his decommitment could help the Sun Devils’ efforts here, but it’s almost a given that he will take as many official visits as possible this month. He’s scheduled to visit ASU on January 20th, and ideally, you would like that visit to take place a week or two later as he explores multiple opportunities.

Tight Ends

2017 Class Commits: Jared Poplawski

Viable Prospects

None. With four returning players at this position and a 2017 class with more pressing needs at other positions, ASU will not seek out any other prospects at this role.

Wide Receivers

2017 Class Commits: Curtis Hodges

Viable Prospects (ASU expected to sign no more than 2 wide receivers total)

Joseph Lewis – needless to say that the five-star prospect from Los Angeles Hawkins is one of the most coveted prospects on the West Coast. All ASU can ask for is a chance to impress him and they will get that opportunity as he officially visits on January 13th. Landing Lewis would go down as the biggest coup in this class, which is why the odds aren’t stacked in ASU’s favor.

Marlon Williams – the USC pledge from Alabama currently doesn’t consider himself a soft commit yet he is taking a trip to Tempe on January 13th. He will still officially visit USC and Auburn in that order. Offensive Coordinator Chip Lindsey’s relationship with Williams is what made this visit possible, to begin with, but it would be quite the surprise if he inked with anyone but the Trojans on signing day.

Gavin Holmes – if his fellow Texan and former Iowa commit, Eno Benjamin, committed to ASU, then the Sun Devils can make serious inroads with Holmes, another prospect that has been blowing up with offers. Much like the other two ASU wide receiver prospects here will be part of a busy January 13th visit weekend. Holmes scheduled to visits UCLA and Notre Dame after ASU, so the Sun Devils aren’t in an enviable position here but currently Holmes is more viable a prospect at this position than Lewis and Williams.

Defensive Line

2017 Class Commits: D.J. Davidson

Viable Prospects (ASU expected to sign no more than 2 defensive linemen total)

Hunter Echols – the USC commit has been shopping around his services for a while, and ASU could be getting a January visit from him. Undoubtedly one prospect ASU will have their work cut for them in order to land.

Fua Leilua – yet another commit to another school (Oklahoma State) who will visit Tempe on the 13th. Visit to Utah State and Oklahoma State will follow. ASU will have to make sure that the lineman’s visit will be a tough act to follow and that he and his wife and future child would prefer ASU’s environment over his other suitors.

Malik Young - one of the more coveted junior college prospects in the region, and due to his school’s location has visited ASU and is very familiar with the program. Didn't take any official visit to date but that should change this month and ASU is probably in a good position to get one.

Walter Palmore – much like his Eastern Arizona teammate Malik Young, Palmore has had a very quiet recruiting process that is bound to pick up this month. His school’s proximity to ASU could help the Sun Devils’ efforts here.

Austin Faoliu – in an interview we did the Arizona commit a couple of weeks ago he seemed genuinely excited about the attention he was receiving from ASU. He’s scheduled to visit Arizona State on January 13th.

Miki Suguturaga - the Hawaii prospect has an impressive list of offers and his visit list should be sorted out in the next few weeks. ASU was one of the earliest offers, so time will tell if that will earn an official visit. (if Suguturaga goes on an LDS mission so while he will commit this month, he will be classified as a 2019 prospect).

Eno Benjamin prediction

I talked with Eno today during a media session at the Army All-American Bowl. We spoke about all the teams in his final group but he didn't tell me who he was committing to.

I don't think it's any surprise to say that ASU is one of the teams in his final consideration, but after some of the things we talked about and connecting some of the other dots, it's my guess that the he does end up picking Arizona State when he announces.

Eno and I more or less have had a good rapport, so I have dealt with him a little more than most players in Texas. May not really come as a surprise to you guys, but it's just my personal read on things.

All Bowl Team

There was an article in the Daily Star sports section this morning by Steve McGargee of the AP entitled "USC, Bama and Clemson stars make up this season's all-bowl team"...

I was too lazy to look up the recruiting star rating for all of the team but just a cursory look at the names told me that the team was loaded with 4 and 5 star recruits as rated by Rivals coming out of HS...

This certainly didn't surprise me in the least as I am a die hard "Talent Is Destiny" proponent as you all know...

Sam Darnold at QB for USC for 4 stars...

Justin Jackson a star RB at Northwestern was 4 stars...

Bo Scarbrough a star RB at Bama was 5 stars...

Dalvin Cook a star RB at FSU was 5 stars...

Saquon Barkley a star RB at Penn St was 4 stars...

Jonathan Allen a star DE for Bama was 5 stars...

Clelin Ferrell a star DL for Clemson was 4 stars...

Trenton Thompson a star DL for Georgia was 5 stars...

Tashawn Bower a star LB for LSU was 4 stars...

Mathew Thomas a star LB for FSU was 5 stars...

Chauncey Gardner a star DB at Florida was 4 stars...

Leon McQuar a star DB at USC was 5 stars...

There are plenty of three star guys spread throughout the team I'm sure but it is statistically significant that 4 and 5 star rated recruits rise to the top of things, whether you are talking all-bowl teams or those destined for the NFL, as a percentage of their position groupings, each and every year...

I wonder how good the Devils would be if they had a dozen more N'Keal Harry (5 star) and Jo Jo Wicker (4 star) type players on the team...my guess is that we would be very good...

I also wonder how we would've done this year if Josh Dobbs hadn't ended up at Tenn, instead of ASU, as he was a high 3 star guy, who has been a star for the Vols since his FR year...

Go Devils!!!

Random uniform thought

I know there's still division on uniforms with regards to the countless amount of alternates and specialty looks that ASU has had in the adidas era. It works with recruits, and that's a good thing, in my opinion. On the other hand, I understand the schools position that they would prefer to fit within the school's own color scheme and have some sort of continuity with the school. So why not look at it with how it's done (well) with other sports. Basketball has done a decent job with it, though it has only done two alternates (the specialty jersey/shorts from last year's PAC-12 Tournament, and the all-gold look).

The best example of combining new looks but also paying tribute to the school itself and having a consistent theme is the baseball program. Adidas has done an incredible job with these, taking away a black and copper alternate from the Nike days (which I thought was their worst uniform) and turning it into a variety of alternate uniforms that felt like they fit ASU and its history in the sport. The Rick Monday throwbacks were incredible, and the new cream jerseys w/ maroon and gold trim and a cursive "Devils" script that was released today might be my favorite uniform ASU has in any sport.

Alright, we have to get into this Ryan Kelley thing at some point, so...

Here's the deal. Ever since Blair Angulo tried to explain why Jason Howell downgraded Dillon Sterling-Cole from a 4-star to a 3-star after last year's US Army All-American week, the whole subject of Scout vs Rivals QB rankings has been touchy. Subscribers here weren't pleased with the downgrade, but mostly were upset with the lack of, and dismissive approach toward an explanation for it. I'm not trying to dredge that up again, especially since Blair is at Scout, and Jason is at TexAgs after Yahoo's company-wide layoff last year. What's done is done.

But in this case, the context matters, so here we go.

Scout says Ryan Kelley has looked awesome at the Under Armour All-America practices. Rivals says Ryan Kelley looked bad, and not just comparatively bad, but like something was wrong with him. There's a huge disconnect here, and because I'm not there to report it for myself, I don't know what to tell you. Opinions on QBs vary, as this board is well aware. This much of a disparity would be an issue if it stood alone, but in context with what happened last year, it's something I feel like you should have a forum to ask questions about, vent about, etc. If you have questions you'd like me to get answers for, I will, so long as they're sensible, and in no way insulting, accusatory, or outside of the realm of something our guys can control, such as 'Why is your observation different than someone else's?"

Now, keep in mind, Ryan Kelley ultimately pulled out of the game due to injury so there was something wrong with him this week. He went out to Florida with every intention of playing in the game. This doesn't mean that there's not some Michael Jordan flu game scenario where he was secretly in pain but practicing like a QB savant- like I said, I can't speak to how he looked, because I wasn't there. I just want to acknowledge the discrepancy and give you all the opportunity to get questions answered if you so choose, at least in a more satisfactory manner than you felt was done last time this happened.

Rose Bowl

That was a heck of a great game last night in the Rose Bowl...don't like the Trojans but you have to give them credit for the way they hung in there and found a way to win at the end...

The upside is that was good for the PAC's reputation even if it was the Trojans...

They've been unstoppable ever since they inserted Darnold at QB and since he's only a RS FR the Trojans are going to be hard to beat in the South and PAC in the coming years...

He has both the "it" factor on his side and he has great "escapability" that most great QBs have at any level...

The PAC finished 3-3 in bowl games with the biggest disappointment being Colorado's one sided loss to Oklahoma St and biggest win coming last night when USC beat Penn St...

I would love to see the Trojans play the Crimson Tide again now because they are an entirely different team with Darnold at QB...

Clemson seems to think they can beat Bama but not so sure about that...

Anyway, most bowl games I even attempted to watch put me to sleep but not the Rose Bowl...

Go Devils!!!

OT- Concussions/Youth Participation (need some help on this)

I'm going to be on the local NPR show next week talking about why, in the age of CTE and concussions, that youth participation in football (specifically in Arizona) is up, not down.

I was hoping to get some theories from the huddle as to why there would be an uptick, and whether or not you've seen an attitude change about the sport in the last few years, peripherally or personally.

Thanks!
