Sunday Walkabout

Mornin Mates...

Today's Topic = Unfathomable

I'm still processing what happened with our Sun Devils this football season...

And, I'm not exactly sure how to measure it in any rational way although we are Big-12 champs...

Now we get to find out where we go next as the behind the scenes political wrangling is taking place at a fevered pitch regarding the playoffs...

I hope and trust that our commissioner - Brett Yormark - has enough juice to get it done for our Sun Devils today so that we end up with a first round bye...

We think we should be there but when is the last time we won a high stakes behind the scenes political match-up against almost any entity like the current selection committee...

Especially, given the back east of the Mississippi River bias that exists in this sort of political quicksand...

Boise St will say they only lost one game and that was against #1 ranked Oregon earlier in the season and never mind about not competing in a P-4 conference, so they don't have any P-4 wins like our Sun Devils, who have also beaten four ranked opponents while the Broncos have only beaten one, twice in UNLV...

Clemson will also come up with a bunch of arguments as to why they should receive a first round bye, as well...

Fox college football analyst - Joel Klatt - has us in with his Top 4 being 1) Oregon 2) Georgia 3) Boise St and 4) ASU

But, enough about all of that...:)

Yesterday, the Sun Devils came, saw and conquered the Iowa State Cyclones to win the Big-12 championship in overwhelming fashion 45-19...

It doesn't get much better than that, does it..??

I've seen a lot of great Sun Devil running backs since the late 60s but I'm sure I've never seen one like Cam Skattebo...

I've seen many great Sun Devil teams over the years, a couple of which went to the Rose Bowl, but this team is right up there with being special...

Where this all ends I have no idea but the journey has been magnificent...

My hat is off to Dilly and his staff and to our championship team that went from being picked last in the Big-12 to champs yesterday...

Again, it doesn't get any better than this, does it..??

Congrats Sun Devils and thank you for the great ride that my poor brain still hasn't fully processed yet...

G'day Mates and Go Devils!!!

Senior Day and Ben Coleman

As you know, this Saturday is going to be Senior Day, and one thing Kenny Dillingham wants to avoid is having a situation where somebody who technically does still have eligibility in 2025, and with no determination being established at this point whether he will play next year, is going to be honored on Senior Day this weekend, but potentially honored again a year from now when he plays in 2025.

Bo Barnes, a former ASU basketball player, was basically told by Herb Sendek following his junior year that he could only come back next year as a walk-on, Barnes he politely declined, and when ASU needed him back next year as a scholarship player, he accepted the offer, so he had back-to-back Senior Day honors so to speak. Pretty Sure Bobby Hurley III is gonna have the same thing happen to him this spring.

So this year, you have left guard Ben Coleman, easily one of the best offensive linemen for the Sun Devils who redshirted in 2019, eligibility freeze of the Covid year in 2020 took place, and missing the entire last season due to an Achilles injury is technically eligible to play in 2025 assuming of course that the NCAA would accept his waiver which there is no reason for them not to do so. You don't have to look further than fellow offensive lineman Emmit Bohle who is playing his 7th year of college football this season.

Dillingham said that he's going to meet with the players' leadership council and come to a joint decision on what to do. I'm assuming that Coleman is not adverse at all to coming back next year, so it's not like this is a moot point. I believe his standing in the NFL draft can only get better with one more year under his belt.

In my opinion, it should be a no-brainer decision for ASU to have him return for next year. I can't think of anybody on the roster who would even play at his level, let alone ahead of that, in 2025. Sure, in theory, you could maybe get somebody from the portal who would fit that criteria, but that is a big roll of the dice.

USC and some of their Arizona players

I was reading an LA Times article and listening to Matt Leinhart as well as checking out a few message boards. There are some issues over there. Some think A few a their receiving corp might move on including the two AZ kids. Is this a pipe dream that they could come back home? And maybe there are a few others that we could get from USC if they enter the portal. The people covering the team including the LA Times writers lament a lack of identity. What do people think? Do we have a shot here at a position of great need with a good quarterback and a good System? But I guess like anything it comes down to money, right

Nickel with Shamari out

McDonald gave up 2 long completions (both for 25) including the TD and really struggled (also had the block in the back when Stovall had the 12 yd punt return)

McDonald is a Stud Sun Devil and only a true frosh with a bright future, but was in over his head entering in Q4 of the ship

Obviously losing Shemari for the 1st half is a HUGE blow but it will be interesting to see who takes those 10 targets that are going that way in the next game

K Whittingham

will know soon on if he is returning or not.........no disrespect to the DC who will take over when he does retire, but for me the sooner Kyle retires the better for us

ASU Women's Volleyball Thread

ASU will be hosting the Houston Cougars (8-7 & 3-2 in conference play) at Mullett Arena tonight, Wednesday October 16th.

The Devils are ranked #13 with a 16-2 (5-1), 6-0 record at home and on a 4-game winning streak (all conference matches).

This will be one of the only few games carried on one of ESPN's primary channels and not ESPN+.

Hopefully you'll have a chance to tune in...It will be entertaining to watch and ASU should win this one in straight sets (3-0).
