...that when we were walking out of the Rose Bowl on January 1, 1997 we would have to wait 28 years to win another outright conference championship. I didn't think we were going to become world beaters, but I certainly thought we'd be getting to the Rose Bowl every 5ish years after that magical season. Snyder had turned a corner.
Of course, he was fired a few years later and only the 1997 team was anywhere near as good as that 1996 team.
That's why I'm doing everything I can to stop and smell the roses (see what I did there?) this time around. It's been a fun season, even if I feel a bit detached since I no longer tailgate and usually spend my pre-game hours at kids sporting events. But I'm not going to get worked up about betting lines, conference favoritism, or anything else. I'm just going to do my best to enjoy this.
I believe we'll get here again in the foreseeable future, as the Big 12 doesn't have a USC, Oregon, UW, Stanford (when they want to be good), or even UCLA. Nor does this conference currently have the QB talent we faced in the Pac 12 (a big reason there were so many upsets and so few unbeaten conference champs in the Pac 12, IMO). But there are no guarantees and who knows where I'll be if it takes another 28 years.
