Head Coaching Wisdom

Here are some of the things that Jedd Fisch has learned, according to the newspaper down here, from many prominent head coaches he served under, on his way up the ladder, to the head coach at AU...

I will paraphrase what he learned from them...

From Steve Spurrier..."treat every down like third down...just because you get three downs doesn't mean you need to take them all...gain momentum at every opportunity"

From Mike Shanahan..."make sure that your offense is married...marry your running game to your passing game...marry one passing scheme to one protection scheme"...

From Sean McVay..."be a great communicator to make sure that everyone is on the same page (at all times)"...

From Pete Carroll..."always compete as the whole game is about competition (at every moment, position, play, etc)"...

From Jim Harbaugh
..."attack each day with enthusiasm unknown to mankind...if you wake up and attack the day, it's amazing how those int he program will get behind you"...

From Bill Belichick..."insist on smart, tough, physical football because, if you do, you will find ways to win a lot of games"...

Belichick also insisted that his assistants and coordinators be experts at what they do that allows you, as head coach, to let them do their work without interference...EMPOWER THEM...

I don't think Herm would disagree with anything that Jedd pointed out except, maybe, what Spurrier said, but what do you think..??

My favorite quote is from Harbaugh about attacking each day with unbridled enthusiasm...

Being retired now, I also attack napping with total enthusiasm...Go Devils!!!

STORY: Dohnovan West looking to show versatility as offensive line leader

Being thrust into the starting lineup as a freshman in a position you never played, is a less than ideal way to being your collegiate career. As Gabe Swartz reports, Dohnovan West has been able to still thrive under those conditions and is now the anchor of the ASU front five

ASU Baseball Roster Composition

One of the jokes around the football posts are the height and length that football is recruiting.

Herm and AP want the Devils to look a certain way when they step off the bus.

In baseball one of the things that has stood out in the Stanford series is just the blatant difference between how the 2 teams physically look.

The 5 biggest position players today are all Stanford players. Their average weight is 205 and ASU doesn't have a single player starting today that weighs that much.

We need to get these freshmen into the weight room this off season.

CHawk

when we hired him I was thrilled

despite his youth and lack of experience, he had the bones to work with as a DB assistant coach and developer of talent

having HE/ML/AP around during his first year or who knows how much more, made it much easier to overlook these issues

his passion for the game, exposure to high level recruiting at USC, his pops' connections and his impressive nature were an easy sell (and the example being set by the likes of Will Harris at Udub did not hurt)

but there is no doubt that recruiting was his calling card.......and while he has only been involved with the 2 most uniquely difficult recruiting cycles at ASU since WWII, he is killing it

but the reason that I posted this is that he is killing it in ways that I did not expect for at least another cycle

he is not relying solely on his pop's connections (which would be impressive if that alone was the majority of his efforts along with the rest of SoCal........LTG!/Isaiah Johnson/Regan/etc). But he is showing up as the LEAD RECRUITING CONTACT for Quarterbacks and other positions (Duffy), Florida preps (Allen/Marshall/Hill), Louisiana preps (Mathews)

there is no doubt that crooters croot..............but CHawk is a freak!

Mornin Mates...

Today's Topic = The Overhaul and Deja Vu

What to make of what is being done with our basketball program these days...that is the key question for today...

We all know that no one was satisfied with what happened with our team this pandemic related season, especially coach Bobby Hurley, who started the season with high expectations, since we had a returning AA point guard and two five star recruits, only to finish with a losing record and lots of disappointments a long the way...

However, none of us, I think, had any idea that he would almost completely overhaul the team in just a few post season weeks, by bringing in a bunch of new players, to replace a bunch of players who decided to take their game to other locales...

You could envision this set of circumstances happening if a new coach were in place but Bobby had recruited all of the players that have entered the transfer portal, in order to migrate to another basketball program...

Additionally, there are two assistant positions and one player development position open, that will need to be filled in the coming weeks, which just adds to the complete overhaul theme...

I don't know if the plot could thicken any more than it already has but it will definitely be very interesting to see how if all plays out this next season in Tempe...

I, for one, will be looking forward to seeing what Bobby does with all of this new basketball material with which to play next season...

I doubt that it could get much worse than what we saw this past season but we are talking about our Sun Devils, after all, where nothing ever comes easily to our athletic programs, right..??

My next question involves our baseball program under Tracy Smith...

Was anyone surprised by what has happened in both games, so far, against Stanford..??

It looked like we had lost the first game only to come back to win it and we had a huge lead, at one point, in our game last night, only to lose it in extra innings...

We keep plunking along under TS, in a worse way, so far as I can tell, than Tim Esmay plunked along at ASU, before RA fired him to replace him with a "championship caliber" coach in Tracy Smith...

Tim inherited a great situation from Pat Murphy and rode his first team at ASU to the CWS and second team to a Super Regional, winning 52 and 43 games in those seasons...

His teams finished 1st, 2nd, 4th, 4th, and 3rd in the PAC, while Tracy's teams have finished 3rd, 3rd, with Tim's players and 10th, 7th, 5th, with his players, before having a promising season last year cut short due to the pandemic, and now hovering around the top of the PAC, after beating up primarily on the bottom of the PAC before this weekend...

This creates a lot of cognitive dissonance for many of us Sun Devil fans, including myself...

I thought RA's hire of TS was fine given the coach's resume but, since we are seeing Deja Vu all over again, that include a Kleenex box of reasonable excuses, for not fulfilling our college baseball destiny, once again...some of us wonder why RA will keep a coach around for another season when he has not come close to accomplishing what Tim Esmay did at ASU...

Does RA speak with a "forked tongue" when you compare his reason for dismissing Tim in favor of Tracy, the guy who, so far, hasn't delivered much of anything to the program besides the two worst seasons, ever, in Sun Devil history...

I'll keep asking the same questions until Tracy proves me wrong or until Ray comes up with something to really justify the continuance of Tracy's tenure at ASU, if we end up with another mediocre baseball finish in the PAC again this season, that seems fairly likely to me at this juncture in the season...

That said, I will root for the Devils again today against the Cardinal and hope that Tracy, at some point, will prove me and other of his detractors wrong, to justify his being our baseball coach beyond this season...

Maybe, Ray feels that this is the best our baseball program can do because he fears that he cannot get a better coach than Tracy, in place, on his watch as our AD...

Deja Vu = already seen this before...ain't it the truth!!!

G'day Mates and Go Devils!!!

What a difference a week makes

Last Tuesday the Wildcats had just curb stomped their in state rivals on a Tuesday after taking 2 of 3 in Tempe.

Little Jay was looking like he had passed Smith as the Devils were licking our wounds.

well, the Devils won a conference series on the road against the Huskies and then turned around and beat the first place Stanford Cardinal Friday night ace in game 1.

meanwhile the Wildcats have dropped 3 straight including

1-9 to cal
A loss to Grand Canyon
And a 2-21 butt whooping at the hands of the lowly Cougars in Pullman.

Interesting

Travis Rudolph (Former FSU WR)

The former FSU WR made national news in 2016 when he went to volunteer at a school and ended up eating lunch with a kid who was sitting alone and had autism. The image was even more striking because Rudolph is black and the kid has red hair. As a country we've been hungry for those stories that unify us I think.

This last week Rudolph was charged with first degree murder after he beat his girlfriend and then shot and killed a man that came to "talk" to him about it.

It is such a conflicting story and one that is difficult to work through. I guess it illustrates the complexity of a person.
