Sun Devils stomp on Tritons, sweep midweek

Following a run-rule victory last night which featured 15 runs on 13 hits, it was described as just “okay" by the ASU skipper. Willie Blomquist's message was effectively received as ASU posted seven runs before making three outs, trouncing UCSD 19-8

Pretty Crazy Roster Note

I skimmed through the online roster today, and if all current portal entries choose not to return to ASU, if my math is correct, there is a grand total of 13 total players (a mixture of scholarship and walk-on players) who were in the program prior to 2023. That covers four recruiting classes (2019-22) of players generally still eligible to play, as the 2019 class has the sixth-year seniors who've used a RS and the free COVID year.

Without naming names, there are a few on this list that at least in theory would not be surprises to jump into the portal as well.

Obviously there are many reasons for these departures, whether it's NIL-driven or the multitude of players acquired in Edwards' last two classes that simply are not power conference caliber players, or different reasons altogether.

2019 Class (2)

QB Trenton Bourguet*
DL Anthonie Cooper^

2020 Class (2)

LB Caleb McCullough^
DB Macen Williams^

2021 Class (3)

WR Coben Bourguet*
RB George Hart III*
DL Gharin Stansbury^

2022 Class (6)

OL Emmit Bohle#
OL Colby Garvin*#
DL Blazen Lono-Wong^
P Race Mahlum*#
WR Max Ware*
WR Patrick Williams*

* - Either still is or at least joined the program as a walk-on
# - Came to ASU as a transfer
^ - NLI signee with ASU out of high school

Potential NCAA basketball tournament expansion

I have no idea if the four Pac-12 teams that are joining the Big 12 are part of this group of Big 12 coaches in favor of expansion. The number discussed is 76

Updated Football Scholarship Distribution Chart

RB George Hart III and DL Harold Brooks III are expected to enter the portal, and won't be part of the team this year. That frees up two spots, and ASU is now at 81 scholarships, and that includes QB Jeff Sims.

So, they can add a WR, DL, and an OL or TE and still meet the 84-scholarship threshold. More attrition could allow ASU to bring in both an OL and TE should they choose.

I made you all a breakdown of the scholarship players to refer back to whenever you have questions. I'll pin it. Hopefully it's helpful.

Also- Alex Losoya may not be a junior. Still waiting for official word on whether or not the two times he supposedly appeared in games are going to cost him a redshirt year. His family has told me they believe he's a redshirt sophomore.

STORY: Devils capitalize on Tritons' mistakes, crush UCSD

"Never going to complain about a W, but on the same token, we left some runners out there.” ASU leaving five men on base was greatly negated by its 13 hits, coming back from a 4-2 deficit to outscore UCSD 13-1 the rest of the night in a home rout
