It's Not Easy To Win On The Road

These stats are from the Daily Star sports section today in an article by Michael Lev...

Men's BB PAC conference road records for past five years (2020 thru 2024)...

2020
= 32 wins on road vs 76 losses = .296%

2021 = 46 wins vs 70 losses = .397%

2022 = 51 wins vs 69 losses = .425%

2023 = 44 wins vs 76 losses = .367%

2024 (to date) = 16 vs 40 = .286%

Here are teams road records in PAC for those same years...

AU = 25 - 19 for .568%

ASU = 17 - 24 for .415%

Cal = 5 - 37 for .119%

Colorado = 17 - 27 for .386%

Oregon = 22 - 20 for .524%

Oregon St = 7 - 36 for .163%

Stanford = 14 - 29 for .326%

UCLA = 27 - 18 for .600%

USC = 22 - 22 for .500%

Utah = 9 - 34 for .209%

Wash = 9 - 36 for .200%

Wazzu = 15 - 29 for .341%

Only AU, Oregon, and UCLA have winning road records in the PAC while USC has broken even in that category to date...

ASU is in the top middle portion of the PAC when it comes to getting road wins in the conference...

Lev also gives Big 12 road records and they appear to be about in the same road difficulty as in the PAC 12...

I will let you draw your own conclusions from these figures...Go Devils!!!

Scouting Report: Stanford

“We can’t allow our inability to make shots to bleed into our defense.” Facing a Stanford team that shoots 39.5% from the three-point range and is ninth-best in the country will test that end of the court for an ASU team that looks to reverse course from recent performances

Sunday Walkabout

Mornin Mates...

Today's Topic = Business As Usual

It doesn't seem that much changes at ASU under this administration as our revenue generating sports just keep sinking to new lows, it seems, the longer our president is in office, IMHO...

Is this just a coincidence or a result of a failed vision for our athletic dept..??

We used to talk about championships but it just seems now that we're okay with mediocrity across the board, it appears to me...

The other P-4 president down here, who has been in a lot of recent trouble, just fired his AD, which seemed to be just fine with most of the big time boosters down here...

Most of the big hitters down here, that include a Who's Who of community boosters, have thrown their support behind president Robbins because they share his vision for the university which includes winning at a championship level, in their revenue generating sports, as far as I can tell...

And, their efforts have kept many of the Cats star football players in tow and ready to continue competing under their new football coach...

That sure didn't happen after Herm decided to abandon ship after only a few games in 2022, so what gives here..??

Do they manufacture a different community glue down here that keeps things together, while our glue up in Tempe has more than reached its expiration date under our current administration..??

Crow is praised by many down here for doing wonderful things at ASU but I'm not sure if anyone, anywhere, is praising how he handles our athletics...

Maybe we are just trying to do too much since we have all sorts of sports that our guided by gender equity rules as much as anything else...

For instance, the Utes have a half dozen less sports in their athletic dept than we do and they seem to be doing alright...

And, now, thanks to the transfer portal and NIL reality everything in football and basketball is even more complicated than ever...

Does coach Hurley lack talent because he doesn't have enough NIL money to pay top line players and will this also carry over to the football program, where Dilly has to go to boosters to make sure his NIL war chest is not too far behind those in the SEC and Big 10...

Anyway, I'm just meandering along the same sorts of pathways we've talked about for the longest time now and I think I've come to the conclusion that our top brass have decided that Sun Devil athletics doesn't have much hope in competing at a championship level, for a variety of reasons they cannot control, so why even bother...

As a result, I think they have decided that we should just accept our plight and hope we do enough in most sports to not lose all of our fans and boosters in the coming years...

I guess we'll find out how Crow really sees things when he hires our next AD ahead of playing in the Big 12 next season...

On a completely different note, I found this quote from one of the key AU boosters enlightening from a fans standpoint, since he had a lot to do, I believe, with the firing of their AD recently...

He said that he couldn't run his business with tenured employees whose jobs are guaranteed... :cool:

"If I could not fire or get rid of my employees, like you have tenured professors, I don't know how the heck I could run my company...I wouldn't have the success I have today"...

That's from Humberto Lopez, who has donated around $20M to the university since Robbins became president and has made it his mission to keep key Wildcat football players on campus and playing next season and beyond for new coach - Brent Brennan...

In his world, there is accountability, it seems, while in college athletics, that may not be the case, especially if you look at a school like ASU, that oftentimes doesn't even seem to have "competitive traction" in its revenue generating sports but the people responsible for that are still being rewarded for their screw-ups, etc, IMHO...

Will it continue to be business as usual at ASU as it looks for a new athletic director, etc..??

Stay tuned...;)

G'day Mates and Go Devils!!!

Sun Devil Science: Evaluating ASU Football’s 2023 transfer additions

In this edition of Sun Devil Science Joe Healey evaluates the 2023 performance of each ASU newcomer acquired last year, as well as providing an outlook for the 2024 season

STORY: Youth will be served in heavy doses on the 2024 Sun Devil pitching staff

“We got so many young guys. They know they have to come out and contribute right away." With ten freshmen arms on the roster, along with a daunting non-conference schedule and a competitive array of Pac-12 opponents, there won’t be much of an adjustment period for this unit

STORY: Four takeaways from ASU’s 84-71 loss to Oregon State

Some wondered if Oregon State was going to suffer the hangover after a buzzer-beating win over Arizona, but it was ASU that, following a dreadful loss to Oregon, showed their inability to be resilient, suffering a consecutive double-digit defeat on the road

Looking Ahead to Big 12 Football

Here's a look at our opponents next season as we enter the Big 12 conference...

Wyoming @ ASU...the Cowboys were 8-4 and 5-3 in MWC with wins over Texas Tech and Fresno St...

Miss St @ ASU...Bulldogs had a horrible season post Mike Leach season going 5-7 and 1-7 in SEC...

ASU @ Texas State...located in Austin metro area the Bobcats went 7-5 and 4-4 in Sun Belt Conference...beat Baylor to start season 42-31...

The Big 12 schedule with dates hasn't been set yet but here are our home games that total four in no particular order...

BYU = 5-7 and 2-7...there will be lots of Cougars in SDS for this game, no doubt...

Kansas = 8-4 and 5-4...Jayhawks aren't a pushover any more under coach Lance Leipold...

Central Florida = 6-6 and 3-6..beat up on Oklahoma St a few weeks ago 45-3...

Utah = 8-4 and 5-4...Cam Rising will be back at QB and Utes will, undoubtedly, be a favorite to win the Big 12, I would think...

Here are our road games in no particular order...

Cincinnati = 3-9 and 1-8...former ASU QB Emory Jones couldn't do much for the Bearcats last season but will not be around (SR) when the Devils play the Bearcats this next season...

K-State = 8-4 and 6-3...Chris klieman is 38-24 during his five years as coach of the Wildcats...

Oklahoma St = 9-3 and 7-2...Cowboys will be playing Texas on Saturday for Big 12 championship...

Texas Tech = 6-6 and 5-4...Red Raiders had up and down season but only lost to Ducks at home 38-30...

Arizona = 9-3 and 7-2...Cats will be one of top teams in Big 12 next season based on all the players they will have returning...

I bring all this up in the hopes that it will incentivize all Sun Devil fans to support our Devils by donating to the Sun Angel Collective...

I think we have about 10 more rides to give this HS recruiting cycle and, hopefully, Dilly and his staff can further bolster our long term roster goals with a good class...

However, in the short term, we are going to have to score big in the transfer portal that will require a lot of NIL money in order to do so...

Looking at the above schedule, without an influx of a lot of quality talent at most positions, we may be looking at another pretty poor season...

Nobody likes what is happening with college football but it is what it is so we better step up or hold our peace and live with the consequences...

Just my two cents worth, as always...Go Devils!!!

STORY: Five Takeaways from ASU’s second-half collapse at Oregon

ASU’s third loss in the last four games followed once again a script where a formidable first-half performance was negated by massive offensive struggles in the second period, as a golden opportunity for a statement road win at Oregon was squandered

TV-Highly Concentrated Viewership

obviously viewers can only watch what is on and obviously they are only attempting to put on what sells advertising. (3 historical bluebloods.....TAMU, Nebraska and Miami.....are replaced with Udub, Wiscy and blueblood-in-waiting Oregon ........otherwise it is all bluebloods....... and the perpetuation continues/strengthens)

ASU aims for a bounce back against a hot-handed Oregon State team

Licking its wounds from a decisive loss handed to them by Oregon and looking to earn a precious Pac-12 road split, ASU will be facing an Oregon State team on Saturday night that not only just upset Arizona but is also a squad that has generally played very well at home

New Athletic Directors: ASU vs AU

That's the theme of Jon Wilner's PAC Hotline column this morning in the newspaper down here as I paraphrase his ideas and conclusions...

ASU is looking for a new AD after Ray's "disastrous hiring of Herm Edwards" that lead to an NCAA recruiting violations investigation and subsequent self-imposed bowl ban in football before the start of last season...

AU is looking for a new AD after Heeke's athletic dept "rang up enough debt to cover the Sonoran Desert and exacerbated a university wide financial crises"...

Robbins takes a "hands-on approach" to AU athletics and is essentially seen by many as the de facto AD at the school, while Crow is seen as deeply disengaged from athletics (even though, when engaged, he thinks he knows everything, as Wilner points out elsewhere in the article)...

Wilner does not think that either school will be able to entice a sitting AD from either the SEC or Big 10 since it would be a big step down in status and available financial resources...

That said, he thinks that AU has a given advantage in community lifestyle and support and has a big time BB program to rally around...

Conversely, ASU is a part of a large scale metro media market and has more on-campus financial support given its huge central campus, etc...

He points out that Sun Devil athletics gets around $23M in central campus support while AU only gets about $13M from central campus support...

Wilner continues by pointing out that disparity will only grow if Robbins has to cut the athletic dept budget to make ends meet, in the future, while that doesn't appear to be the case at ASU...

He also says that Robbins hands-on approach may work against him, while ASU does not have adequate "competitive traction" vs pro sports in the Valley, etc, that may work against them...

So, who will either school get as their next AD, when no SEC or Big 10 AD is going to move to either school, for the reasons listed above, and where ADs in the ACC and Big 12 will only see the move as lateral and nothing more than that...

Heeke was seen as old-fashioned and Ray was seen as inept by many of their schools fans and boosters...

I don't know who either school will pick as their next athletic directors but those ADs better be savvy in the new portal transfer and NIL worlds...

You will need skilled entrepreneurs, who have the moxie, to keep either school relevant in the sports that really matter, from a financial standpoint, or you might as well throw in the towel and put a "Going Out of Business" sign on the schools front lawn for everyone to see...(my conclusion)...

Just my two cents worth, as always...:cool:

Thoughts..??
