Here's what happened when we sacked Colorado (5)

We were not sacked for the first time of the season............at least that is what I found in the "official stats" but in the 1st series of the 2nd half, Manny would only step 5 yards deep as though the end zone line was a wall and this allowed quick pressure so he stepped up and was brought down for -1..........a sack.

We sacked CU 5 times (1 in 1st half and 4 in 2nd)

1)Rushed 4--Smallwood beat LG badly and nails Montez as he steps right up into him
2)Rushed 4--Latu has strong pressure from the edge and then works back towards the LOS and jumps on Montez' back as he is headed toward LOS
3)Rushed 4--We really only rushed 3 as Latu was setting the edge while Wicker and Wren force the issue with pressure and Latu gets the stat (although I think they officially called this a .5 for Latu and a .5 for Sam)
4)Rushed 4--Wicker stunts all the way around Latu to pressure from the edge and Jay Jay Wilson nails Montez while trying to strip the ball (either he learned that in the past 3 weeks or it's just natural)
5)Rushed 5--Great push by Wren up middle and good outside push/pressure by Wicker, pressure by Latu on other side and Wicker cleans up as Calhoun arrives late (I think they officially gave Calhoun .5)

Sunday Walkabout

Mornin Mates...

Today's Topic = Great Weekend

We all know that anytime we win and AU loses that it is a great weekend...:)

It did not look like the Devils were going to beat Colorado for most of the game as our defense kept giving up too many big plays and our offense seemed to be missing on most cylinders up until the end of the game...

Meanwhile, over in LA, the Cats had made a dramatic comeback against the Trojans tying the game at 35 in the 4th quarter and had all of the momentum on their side, at that point, only to watch USC rebound nicely under the leadership of Sam Darnold to beat the Cats 49-35...

The Devils keep finding ways to win games behind a less than spectacular QB in MW but he out dueled Khalil Tate last night as these numbers prove...

MW = 18-34 passing for 202 yds with 2 TDs and 0 INTs along with 94 yds rushing on 14 carries for 1 TD and 6.78 ypc...QB rating of 64.2

KT = 14-31 passing for 146 yds with 2 TDs and 2 INTs along with 161 yds on 26 carries for 1 TD and a 6.19 ypc...QB rating of 32.6

So, Wilkins may not be a dynamic player like Tate but he is doing what Graham and his staff want him to do leading the Sun Devil offense...that is, keeping TOs to a minimum and scoring enough to win games...

Tate seems to be a great QB for Rich Rod's uptempo system in Tucson while Wilkins seems to be the right guy for Graham's system in Tempe...

So, you have an "elevator" in Tate who made a couple of very costly mistakes against the Trojans that led to the Cats loss, keeping in mind that he also got the Cats back in the game from far back in the second half, while Manny just kind of plunked along doing what was necessary to make the Devils win at the end, when it counted the most...

We are showing a great deal of resilience these days at ASU in finding ways to win and we were also very lucky that the Buffs dropped a bunch of passes last night that surely would've have led to our defeat, if those passes had been caught but those are the breaks of the game, right...

We gave up 345 passing yards to Steven Montez, the Buffs QB, which is very troubling but we won which is all that counts...

It should also be noted that last night's victory was the Sun Devils 600th career win...;)

As far as the PAC is concerned, it looks like the Trojans are the best team with Washington the second best right now...the Trojans only have to beat Colorado in Boulder next weekend to clinch the PAC South, I believe, while the Huskies travel to Stanford next weekend that will not be an easy game for them...

There are not any easy games in the PAC and we will have our hands full in the coming weeks against UCLA and even Oregon St on the road, before facing Tate and the Cats to conclude the season...

It looks like for the time being that Todd has dodged a bullet this season but he's still not there yet if the Devils don't win enough to go bowling...

Finally, I was very impressed by Eno Benjamin and Curtis Hodges last night as true freshmen...

We have some good, young talent but we need much more of it to still plug up our porous defense and make our offense click better...

So, here's the big question for all of you this morning...do you like tortoises or hares best at the all important QB position...??

I don't know how Aesop would answer this question and that's why I'm asking you...dynamism vs steadiness...slow but sure vs fast but mistake prone...

Who would you put your money on in a race..??

Have a good week...:)

G'day Mates and Go Devils!!!

OT- I Wish This was Real

In addition to the countless other activities I participate in over the weekend, I have a “practice sports book” app that you bet fake money on for real games. Did a five game Pac parlay this weekend (“bet” on Saturday morning so I didn’t include the ruins and Yoots).

Bet “$500” and nailed it!! Look how much I “won” in the lower right corner.

Like I said...wish this was real:

Here's what happened when we blitzed

CU ran 80 plays from scrimmage (49 in the 1st half and 31 in 2nd half)
We rushed more than 4 on 13 total plays (8 in the 1st half and 5 in the 2nd)
16% blitzing (although some would add a couple of plays that we rushed 3 with a late blitzer)

1)Lindsey ran for 1 yd
2)Complete to Ross for 9 yd gain, Adams in coverage
3)Lucas on CB blitz forces Montez to scramble for no gain or 1/2 yd
4)Lindsey picks up 7 yds (his longest run of the night)
5)Smallwood (and other confusion on DL) lined up in wrong spot and is moving to other side as ball is snapped. Screen complete to Fields for 16 yds tackled by Sam/Fields
6)Some would put this down as a stacked LOS rather than rushing 6, but...at 6 yd line, 3rd & 3 and Lindsey runs for 3 yds and 1st down
7)CB blitz by Lucas forces Montez up into pocket and 1 yd gain
8)Incomplete on a slant to Fields with Lucas in tight coverage

2nd half
9)Incomplete to Bobo, thrown high, Fields in coverage
10)Smallwood with big -4 TFL on Lindsey
11)Rhodes with nice TFL on Lindsey all the way from the far side of the play
12)Complete to Bobo for 8 yds, Lucas makes tackle (one of his team leading 12)
13)Sack-5th sack of the night, great push by Wren and good outside push/pressure by Wicker, pressure by latu on other side and Wicker cleans up as Calhoun arrives late

PAC Weekend

UCLA @ Utah...the Utes are favored by 6.5 amid speculation that UCLA QB Josh Rosen will not play against them...both teams are 4-4 with the Bruins 2-3 and Utes 1-4 in conference...this figures to be an ugly game and I'll go with the Utes because it's a home game...

Oregon @ Washington...the Huskies are favored by 17 after the line started at 26.5 for Wash but, since injured Ducks QB Justin Herbert may start following a broken collarbone, the line has narrowed quite a bit...in any event, I do not see the Ducks winning this game on the road...

Cal @ Oregon St...the Bears are favored by 7 over the Beavers that seems about right to me but the Beavers almost beat Stanford last week and have had a couple of extra days to get ready for this game, while the Bears are coming off a non-competitive game in their loss to Colorado last Sat...so, a Beaver's win would not surprise me in this game...

Wazzu @ Stanford...the Cougs are favored by 2 after looking pretty bad last weekend against the Cats while the Cardinal was very fortunate to come away with a win at Oregon St...I will go with Stanford in this game since they are playing at home and have had an extra couple of days to prepare for this game but they looked horrible against the Beavers...injured Bryce Love will be a game time decision for the Cardinal...with a healthy Love I would think the Cardinal beats the Cougs but if he doesn't play, who knows...

Arizona @ USC...the Trojans are favored by 7 and are playing at home, with plenty of talent on their team, which they showed against ASU last weekend but the Cats have a gifted QB that has elevated their entire offense the past month...no one in the PAC has ever won four straight Offensive Player of the Week Awards that Khalil Tate has done so far...I'm still betting on the talent differential in favor of the Trojans but the Cats are probably capable of pulling off the upset if Tate is not contained adequately by USC...

Colorado @ ASU...the Devils are favored by only 3 after getting drubbed by the Trojans last weekend while the Buffs looked good against Cal in their win...will the Devils defense do a good job of preventing big plays like they did against Wash and Utah or will it be another poor performance like they had against USC, and will the Devils anemic offense be able to score enough points to beat the Buffs...your guess is as good as mine...

As I've already noted, there is no reason for the Devils not to win 3-4 games in November as none of the remaining teams on our schedule have more talent than we do but UCLA and Oregon St are road games and AU now has a QB that makes them imposing...we'll see what Graham and his team are made of in November...

Go Devils and Beat the Buffs!!!
