NFL/Goddell/Papa Johns Battle Begins

I own some shares of PZZA so naturally listen to its quarterly earnings calls. Its most recent was particularly interesting due the NFL's recent loss of viewership and the negative impact it is having on growth. The founder and CEO, Mr. Papa John himself, didn't mince his words. It's not often we get to witness the intersection of Wall Street, professional sports, and the Consumer Market so thought I would share this with you:

ASU Basketball - thoughts and projections?

I'm curious to hear from those who have seen either of the first two games in person.

What are the issues this team has given the two close games to what should be inferior teams?

Looking at the box score it would seem defense is a problem. Is it scheme, match-ups, personnel, effort?

Is this team a work in progress ie. will they get substantially better as we move towards PAC play?

ASU Football Practice Report — Oct. 31, 2017

Hey guys,

ASU was back at practice today, looking for a turnaround week ahead of Saturday’s game against Colorado. Here’s our report from today:

LOCATION: Kajikawa Practice Fields

MEDIA AVAILABILITY: About 20 minutes

IN GREEN: QB Brady White

MUSCLE BEACH: OL Mason Walter, Corey Smith, Tyler McClure

BALL/SECURITY TACKLE: Nothing too new or ground-breaking from these drills today, but here’s some video of the defensive players working on their tackling.

TEAM/TEMPO

A lot happened in terms of personnel today, most notably at wide receiver and linebacker. Here’s what the teams looked like in today's practice:

OFFENSE
First Team
QB: Manny Wilkins
RB: Demario Richard/Kalen Ballage
WR: N’Keal Harry, John Humphrey, Jalen Harvey
TE: Tommy Hudson
OL: LT Cohl Cabral, LG Sam Jones, C A.J. McCollum, RG Steven Miller, RT Zach Robertson/Quinn Bailey

--Zach Robertson was on the first team in tempo, but Quinn Bailey replaced him in team.

Second Team
QB: Blake Barnett
RB: Nick Ralston/Nick Ralston
WR: Ryan Newsome, Jeremy Smith, Curtis Hodges
TE: Alex Otero/Frank Ogas
OL: LT Tyson Rising, LG Cade Cote, C Marshal Nathe, RG Alex Losoya, RT Quinn Bailey

--Ogas played on the second team in team drills, but it was Otero at tight end in tempo.

DEFENSE
First Team
DL: JoJo Wicker, George Lea, Tashon Smallwood
LB: A.J. Latu, Christian Sam/Khalyan Thomas/Deion Guignard, D.J. Calhoun
SPUR: J'Marcus Rhodes
DB: CB Chase Lucas, CB Kobe Williams, S Das Tautalatasi, S Chad Adams

--The first-team defense was quite the moving target today, especially at middle linebacker. Christian Sam didn’t play much during team and tempo drills, and was replaced by a handful of players rather than just one in particular.

--Smallwood only played during team drills. Shannon Forman was in his first-team spot during tempo.

Second Team
DL: Jalen Bates, D.J. Bates, Jordan Hoy
LB: Jay Jay Wilson Deion Guignard/Khaylan Thomas, Malik Lawal
SPUR: Tyler Whiley
DB: CB Darien Cornay, CB Mo Chandler, S Demonte King, S Evan Fields

--Deion Guignard and Khaylan Thomas also both showed up at linebacker on the second team, but Thomas was only with the second team in team drills.

After a rough weekend, especially on defense, ASU seems to be at least trying a few new things on that side of the ball. Maybe it's nothing, given that we only see 15-20 minutes of a two-hour practice, but we should know more about what these moves mean as Saturday gets closer.

That’s all for today’s report. Justin will be back out tomorrow and I’ll have the film study later this week.

Check out this article from Utah's rivals site

A bit of an lol for us today (thankfully). I know there was a lot of talk about the Ute fan base attitude and this article shows it in spades. Here are the best parts:

This week ASU comes to town. This seemed like a no-brainer win for the Utes a few weeks ago, but then ASU went out and gave a suffocating defensive performance on their way to defeating the mighty Washington Huskies. Now, everyone is wondering- are the Sun Devils good?

In a word: nah.

against Washington they happened to have a string of luck

Poor RS & Development Strategy for Players?

Seems that we played way too many Fr. players that have only seen a few snaps.

Concerned with over-usage of starters on special teams.

Forman (DL), tall WR Hodges, Eno (unless you let him return KO, get more carries)...

To develop depth, you need to play players... trading a FR year with less than 50 plays, vs. 5-th year of full production makes zero sense... unless you are afraid you will not still be the coach...

Jacom Brimhall Nominated For Burlsworth Trophy

TEMPE, Ariz. – Arizona State senior running back Jacom Brimhall has been nominated for the 2017 Burlsworth Trophy, according to an announcement by the Springdale (Ark.) Rotary Club . The annual award is given to the most outstanding football player in America who began their career as a walk-on and has shown outstanding performance on the field.

A valued member of the Sun Devil offense and special teams, Brimhall was a local star at Mesa Mountain View where he rushed for 3,119 yards and 35 touchdowns the last two seasons of his high school career. After serving a Latter Day Saints mission in Mexico City for two years Brimhall joined the Sun Devils as a walk-on in 2014 and one year later was placed on full scholarship.

Brimhall, who is also a finalist for the William V. Campbell Trophy (recognizes the top football scholar-athlete in the nation), graduated from ASU in less than four years, earning his undergraduate degree in exercise and wellness last May and is currently competing as a graduate student. His role on the field has gradually increased each year as a Sun Devil.

The Burlsworth Trophy is named in honor of Brandon Burlsworth, a former University of Arkansas walk-on and All-American offensive lineman. The foundation announced the 63 players nominated from Division I schools across the country, including athletes from fellow Pac-12 schools Washington State, California, USC, Arizona, UCLA and Colorado.

"In the eighth year of this award, I continue to be in awe of the work ethic and determination of all our nominees." said Marty Burlsworth, CEO and founder of the Burlsworth Foundation and older brother of Brandon. "Beginning their college career as a walk-on and overcoming incredible obstacles is truly inspiring."

The Brandon Burlsworth Foundation, in conjunction with Springdale Rotary Club, will hold an awards ceremony on December 4, 2017 to honor the three finalists and announce the winner of the 2017 trophy. The ceremony will take place in Springdale, Ark.

ASU 11.1 practice

It's November. Pretty important stretch coming up. The Sun Devils were at practice again on Wednesday, and here is the report:

As always, the location is the same. It seems like media availability has gotten shorter. We still get good access compared to what reporters at most other schools get, but we often don't get to see the 2s in team nowadays. Today, availability ended with the 1s. However, I always try to chart the substitutions during that period because some second team guys — particularly receivers.

Here is today's report:

GREEN JERSEYS: QB Brady White, OL Tyler McClure, WR Kyle Williams, WR Jalen Harvey
(Harvey and Williams looked OK to me, probably just precautionary. Graham is usually pretty straight-up with the way he handles injuries. So, if they practice, they usually play. More on Williams down further..)

PERSONNEL: McClure and OL Mason Walter were on muscle beach today. A couple times in the past week, we've seen guys go back there periodically for some treatment. For example, N'Keal Harry has been there in spots. However, it seems ASU is relatively healthy on the injury front, especially when comparing it to last season.

BALL SECURITY: There wasn't much to note here, but here is a video:

TEMPO:

Here are the teams I charted for this period:

First-Team Offense: QB Manny Wilkins, RB Kalen Ballage (Demario Richard rotated in during 11-on-11), WR N’Keal Harry, Kyle Williams, Ryan Newsome, TE Tommy Hudson, LT Cohl Cabral, LG Sam Jones, C A.J. McCollum, RG Steven Miller, RT Quinn Bailey

Note: It looked like Kyle Williams was pretty much fine. He's banged up, but they've still let him speak in interviews, which seems to usually be a good sign. He also seemed upbeat yesterday. Wilkins joked with him yesterday because Graham said this is the first time Williams has been in a green jersey.

Wilkins called him "soft" right after. He's far from it. I anticipate he'll play Saturday.

Second-Team Offense: QB Blake Barnett, RB Eno Benjamin, WR John Humphrey, Frank Darby, Terrell Chatman, TE Alexander Otero, LT Tyson Rising, LG Cade Cote, C Marshal Nathe, RG Alex Losoya, RT Zach Robertson

During 11-on-11, we saw a different offensive line:

ROTATION during 11-on-11: LT Steven Miller, LG Sam Jones, C A.J. McCollum, RG Quinn Bailey, RT Cohl Cabral

First team defense:

DL: JoJo Wicker, George Lea, Tashon Smallwood

LB: Alani Latu, DJ Calhoun, Christian Sam

SPUR: J'Marcus Rhodes

DB: CB Chase Lucas, CB Kobe Williams, S Dad Tautalatasi, S Chad Adams

Second team defense:

DL: Shannon Forman, Jalen Bates, Jordan Hoyt

LB: Jay Jay Wilson, Khaylan Thomas, Deion Guignard

SPUR: Tyler Whiley

DB: CB Alex Perry, CB Darien Cornay, S Evan Fields, S Demonte King

Here are a few plays I saw during the team session:

-Manny throws to N'Keal

-Manny to Newsome

-Kalen Ballage dropped a pass from Manny

-JoJo Wicker got up and batted down a pass

That's it for today's practice repot. Stay tuned for our continued coverage throughout the week.

More U4 Oddities

Their offense produced over 40 less snaps versus Cal, yet they won. Now tonight their D have up 646 yards.......and they won......

...BY 21pts!! Can we all just agree that Jesus attended UA and his disciple is Sean Miller?

As bad as we've looked tonight, I don't fear that fraud down south at all. Wait and watch them get exposed next Saturday in the first real difficult road game of their season.

Man, their schedule and a deity being on their side are aligning perfectly for them, to date. I still say they win only one more game this years vs Oregon State. But then again I'm the effing idiot who predicted a 38-17 win tonight over USC's backups.

I would love to hear liveid's take on U4. I don't think I've ever seen a bigger statistical fraud than the 2017 U4 rats.
