FCS/Mid-Major Games and What They May Mean

With the high level of uncertainty surrounding the team this year and personally having almost no read on the team, I thought I’d take a look at the idea that how badly we beat our opening foe NAU this year correlates to how good of a season we’ll have. So I went to look at our FCS opponents historically and found we really haven’t played that many. Only 13 since we’ve joined the PAC and all but one of those in just the last 15 years. So I expanded it to FCS teams and mid-majors. To include mid-majors, and save myself ~70 years of data, I limited the data to the years since ASU has joined the PAC.

That leaves us with 70 games over the last 38 years; 13 FCS foes and 57 mid-major foes. For the sake of this, I’m not including bowl games played against mid-majors or bowl wins in the season win total. So we went 7-5 in 2012 in this set of data, for example.

The first thing that stands out is how exceedingly average we’ve been as a program, averaging 6.65 wins over the last 38 years and with 6 or 7 wins almost 50% of the time. For the sake of this analysis, let’s consider 6 or 7 regular seasons an ‘average’ season, anything less than that will be a ‘bad’ season, and anything more a ‘good’ season. We could add a ‘great’ season category, but we’ve only had 3 seasons of 10 or more wins in the PAC era of ASU football.

Here is each of the FCS games ASU has played with the margin of victory and the number of regular season wins. The small sample size is pretty evident. The trend shows that the more you win by the better, but this is hardly predictive. The average margin of victory is 41 points for a “good” season, 29 points for average, and 28 points for bad. So not a lot this can tell us, other than hopefully we absolutely crush them.

Adding in mid majors, the number of data points jumps to 70 and gives us a better picture, but not a lot more predictability. The numbers are all over the place. The average margin of victory is 30 points for a “good” season, 20 points for average, and 22 points for bad. It looks as though average teams have the most trouble with cupcakes.

28+ wins by 15 to 27 wins by <= 14
good 17 52% 3 20% 6 27%
average 10 30% 7 47% 12 55%
bad 6 18% 5 33% 4 18%

Looking at it from this angle provides a little more insight, but not a whole lot than we’ve already gleaned. The more ASU wins by the better. Anything less than a blowout, is not a great sign, but hardly an indication the team is going to tank. Bear in mind, these numbers don’t account for the quality of the opponents, but that’s something we won’t know about NAU after Saturday either.

Rest of the Week Coverage

ASU's Thursday practice (a session that is lighter and shorter by nature than Tuesday/Wednesday) won't have any media availability and today was the last day for coach/player interviews.

So what we do have coming between now and kickoff are two analysis articles on NAU's offense and defense, as well as a comprehensive overall preview of Saturday's game.

And then of course we'll be out there Saturday to cover the game with our entire crew.

Analysis: ASU’s Official Depth Chart Released

One thing to keep in mind when discussing the depth chart is that three players are projected to be suspended, two of them players who could be listed as starters. Since these suspensions won’t be officially announced until Saturday the depth chart won’t take these suspensions into consideration.

Here is the depth chart one more time for reference

Wednesday's Practice Report: 8/31

LOCATION: Kajikawa Practice Fields

ATTIRE: Shells

MEDIA AVAILABILITY: About 25 minutes

EN VERDE (no contact): No green jerseys

TOWEL AND SUNSCREEN (muscle beach, limited): LS Mitchell Fraboni, TE Grant Martinez, DB James Johnson (brace on right knee as he has had), OL Marshall Nathe, OL Tyson Rising, QB Bryce Perkins (neck brace as usual), FB Mark "Goose" Cosgrove,

GUESTS: A scout from the Patriots attended practice

TILLMAN JERSEY: None

Funny note: Demario Richard was walking into the practice fields and stopped by one reporter's phone camera and said, "You gotta believe! You gotta believe! National champs!", which was just pretty interesting. He, Armand Perry and a couple others walked away chuckling after that. Seems like he's ready for the opener.

Practice started with tackle circuit and head coach Todd Graham was continuously screaming, "This is what wins games!...Best team at tackling in the country, let's go!" Graham was pretty amped today.

Media saw the offense run 11-on-0 for a series down the field. Here's how the teams looked:

First team: QB Manny Wilkins, RB Kalen Ballage, WRs N'Keal Harry/Tim White (slot)/Jalen Harvey)/Ryan Jenkins, LT Evan Goodman, LG Sam Jones, C Stephon McCray, RG Quinn Bailey, RT Zach Robertson

Note: Jenkins ran with this team, but don't read too much into him being a starter. Won't be the case come Saturday.

Second team: QB Brady White, RB Nick Ralston, WRs Ellis Jefferson/Fred Gammage (slot), Terrell Chatman, TE Raymond Epps, LT (practice squad), LG Alex Losoya, C A.J. McCollum, RG Steven Miller, RT (practice squad), the two tackles on this second team were practice squad guys

The third team was all practice squad except for TE Tommy Hudson. Dillon Sterling-Cole ran the third team.

For what it's worth (if anything), the second team scored on a Nick Ralston run.

After the 11-on-0 period, the team practiced special teams. Punter Matt Haack looked great for the most part, save one shank he had when he tried a rugby-style punt. The knuckleball effect on his punts was pretty noticeable today, as it usually is because he's a left-footed punter.

Do You Want to See Two Quarterbacks Play Versus NAU?

Now, I know the next natural question is under what circumstances?

You don't want to say that you want to see Brady White playing because Manny Wilkins is struggling.

But do you want to White and Wilkins operate a two-quarterback system against a team they can "afford" to do so?

Do you play Wilkins exclusively even if he leads ASU to four, five touchdown lead or do you make sure that White sees the field at that point? True, White needs as many game snaps as possible, but it's not like Wilkins is a grizzled veteran and can't use extra reps.

What are your thoughts?

Jeff Van Raaphorst

Do you guys remember your first favorite ASU player at all? For me it was Van Raaphorst. Growing up in NYC the Pac-10 wasn't very popular and rarely was I able to see west coast teams. If I did it was USC or UCLA and college football coverage was a fraction of what it is today.

The Sun Devils of course had a great 1986 season and he was a leader. Anytime I think about my earliest ASU football memories he is definitely the guy. Just curious as to who some of your favorite Sun Devils were growing up whether it be the 70's 80's or 90's?
