PAC Baseball Standings

1) AU = 15-6 & 30-11 (Cats have won 9 straight and are talking about going to Omaha with this very hot team)

2) Stanford = 10-5 & 24-9 (Cardinal visits AU this coming weekend for showdown series)

3) Oregon = 11-7 & 27-11 (mathematically still in title race)

4) OSU = 11-7 & 29-14 (math still in race)

5) UCLA = 12-9 & 25-14 (math still in race)

6) ASU = 10-8 & 25-14 (math still in race...plays at Cal this next weekend)

7) Cal = 9-9 & 22-19 (math still in race...hosts ASU this coming weekend)

Wazzu, USC, Utah and Wash are all out of it...

Devils have Cal and USC on road with Oregon St and UCLA at home...

They will be hard pressed to go 6-6 in their remaining PAC games, IMHO...

In reviewing Tracy's tenure at ASU I wonder how many bad losses he has versus good wins...

I think the bad losses will win out but could very well be wrong about that...

Would anyone want to hazard a guess..??

Devils have their work cut out for them in the coming weeks if they want to make the playoffs...

Go Devils!!!

ASU Baseball The Good, bad, and Ugly (Rhode Island series)

The Good:
- Rhode Island came in with an RPI of 47. That's a potential tournament team and we got the sweep.

- Spencer Torkelson was widely considered as a once in a generation player while at ASU and for good reason. Tork posted an otherworldly for a freshman 1.183 OPS. I'm not sure what Ethan Long will do as we get back into conference play where advanced scouting and talent waits for him, but, in the last 10 games he has looked every bit as good as Tork looked as a frosh. Long's OPS is 1.150 after the Rhode Island series.

The Bad:
- The Bullpen looks gassed. We have some arms out there that we aren't using that I think we need to roll the dice on and give them some work. With the emergence of some of our young bats I'd like to see Murphy go back to the pen. Barnett has looked decent as well in limited action as has Cacchione. I know this isn't best case scenario, but, our pitchers need some help.

The Ugly:
- ASU's Friday night starter went just 1 inning and gave up 2 ER's. Saturday saw Fall go 3 1/3 giving up 3 runs. Sunday Bodlo went 2 1/3 and gave up 7 runs (5 ER). That's 10 ERs in 6 2/3 innings from our starters over the weekend. Is it any wonder our bull pen was gassed by Sunday? We have to get more innings out of guys like Justin Fall if we want any kind of chance at a post season run. We can talk about the bull pen all we want, but, the starting pitching was atrocious.

I'll be interested to see where our RPI goes after getting the sweep.

If you are looking ahead ASU has 4 conference series left. @Cal, Oregon State, @USC, and then we finish up with UCLA.

ASU Baseball v Rhode Island (Game 3)

Today the Sun Devils look to pull off the sweep against a gritty Rhode Island Baseball team.

I'm sure they are glad to be back in the friendly confines of Muni after a weekend full of cold rain and wind in Utah.

Ethan Long continues to be on a tear and he has changed the complexion of the ASU line up. Both he and Moss have really become what we thought we were getting in Conor Davis and Allbry Major. A middle of the order Righty Lefty combo that can mash.

Just as important as Long's power bat though is his Alpha Male attitude. Maybe it's just a preference but I prefer that to the silent leadership we were getting from Swifty, Jump, and Ferri.

Today is an important game for momentum sake. A sweep feels better than a 2-1 series win and it looks better on the resume as well. Let's go Devils!

Sunday Walkabout

Mornin Mates...

Today's Topic = Go Fish

That's what four-star QB recruit AJ Duffy told ASU when he chose the Noles over the Devils this past week, after a long recruitment, where he had apparently told the Devils, months ago, that he would chose them, becoming a "silent commitment" at that point...

The problem was that Duffy treated that apparent "silent commitment" as a way to enhance the drama surrounding his recruitment by repeatedly denying that he had committed to the Devils, even though ASU insiders insisted that he had told the Devils not to worry, as he would end up at ASU...

So, had the Devils gotten a "silent commitment" from the young man which led them to put all of their collective QB recruitment eggs in one basket, where there was not back-up plan in place, in case the "commitment" turned out to be a false positive..??

Maybe, the idea of a "silent commitment" is just a matter of semantics whereby the recruit and his family would say one thing while the Devils' insiders would say something else...

In any event, the Devils are now left scrambling to find a star QB recruit to replace Daniels when he decides to leave the program for the NFL, in the next year or two...

It's also pretty clear that Zak Hill and Herm want another dual-threat QB recruit to run our offense rather than a pure pocket type passer, as a dual-threat QB can make big plays with both their arm and their feet...

You cannot argue with that goal as long as you are not ignoring an Arron Rodgers or Andrew Luck type QB, who both elevated their respective programs - Rodgers at Cal and Luck at Stanford - before going to the NFL where they became stars...

This will be especially true if the Devils can continue to get a bunch of really good offensive linemen, outstanding running backs, gifted wide receivers and tight ends to come and play for Herm at ASU...

That said, we do not want to have to go fishing to secure a gifted QB prospect this late in the recruiting game, do we..??

Speaking of playing the game of Go Fish, I'm reminded of how many athletic directors we've had in the past that have played that game while our neighbors down here and at other schools don't seem to have to go fishing all the time like we do at ASU...

Ced Dempsey, who was the AD at AU from 1983 to 1993, seemed to have a pretty golden touch when it came to hiring athletic coaches that included Lute Olson in men's basketball, Mike Candrea in Softball, Dave Rubio in volleyball, Frank Busch in swimming, Joan Bonvicini in ladies basketball and Dick Tomey in football...

He had even convinced Earle Bruce, the head coach at Ohio St, to commit to replacing Larry Smith when he left for USC only to decide not to take the Cats job offer after he got back to Columbus...

The key here is that he didn't hire any duds that I'm aware of and several of his hires elevated their respective programs to national prominence in basketball, softball, swimming, and volleyball and all of the hires stayed in Tucson for well over a decade...

Lute coached for 25 years before retiring, Candrea is still coaching softball, as is Dave Rubio, while Bonvicini coached for 17 years, Busch coached for over 20 years, and Tomey coached for 14 years before being forced out, with no subsequent football coach coming close to what he was able to accomplish at the school since then...

Now look at what has gone on at ASU over the years and you can see that the Devils have been playing Go Fish on a regular basis, particularly in the Big Three sports...football, basketball and more recently baseball...

And, I ask, what does that say about our athletic leadership compared to many other programs in the country..??

Are we just hiring ADs that use a draw by numbers - Go Fish - coloring book to make important hires or are they just very inept when it comes to having a vision and the savvy and moxie to to make that vision a reality, like Ced Dempsey did at AU..??

On another note, here's hoping our baseball team completes a sweep of Rhode Island and that we can win enough the remainder of the season to finish in the upper-half of the PAC, where most of us think the Devils belong, all of the time...

If not, maybe ASU will have to play Go Fish, once again, with our baseball program, although I'm sure that Ray will be loath to do so, since he's already gone fishing once for the right baseball coach that, unfortunately, has lead to more bad losses than good wins during his career, so far, at ASU...

Well, that's my two cents this beautiful Sunday in the desert...:)

I await your great feedback, as always...;)

After attending its spring game, TE Kaden Helms bullish on ASU

“I know a lot of schools that say they’re going to use the tight ends but It was fun to see (the Sun Devils) put their words to actions.” TE prospect Kaden Helms saw in-person ASU tight end Jalin Conyers score twice in Sunday's spring game. That makes the content of his conversations with ASU's tight end coach Adam Breneman and the overall relationship more genuine
