Tight End

In the Sparky formation we had 3 TEs. Kohl(in-line TE), Wilson(playing RB) and Hill (playing H-Back).

We did not attempt a pass to a TE tonight, only attempted 1 (that I can recall and it was incomplete to a wide open Kohl) vs NAU

Only have 2 total catches by TEs in 3 games (Kohl 2 for 67 yards

Lindsey had next to no throws to TEs at Southern Miss last season but I do expect this to change

Defensive timeouts

Last night had the first defensive timeout that I have an issue with this season

Down 28-18 in Q4

14:14 left when the whistle blew on the 2nd down tackle and it went from 2nd down to 3rd and 10. THIRD AND 10

We let 41 seconds run off the clock down to 13:33 as the offense and the defense got set up and we looked intently at their formation. They had 2 TEs in tight on the left side (Covered by Moeak, Orr & Rhodes...perhaps with a little help from Wicker with a bump or more) and 2 WRs wide right (covered by Gump & Rhodes)

The RB motioned out of the backfield to the right as the QB was calling signals. Perry was on the side where the RB was motioning towards

Moeak evidently at the last second notices that the RB had been set up on the opposite side of the QB to where he was and follows him late while he is pointing and communicating

Just prior to the snap CTG gets the timeout

It is very surprising that Moeak with all of his experience beinbg out of position looks like the likely culprit in this

It is surprising that this deep in a game that the offense is able to completely baffle us with such an average formation (double TEs is not totally normal but its not trips with 3 WRs standing one behind the other and anothe receiver motioning in that direction).

It is fortunate that the 41 seconds burned and that the timeout used did not cost us as needing 2 scores to win in Q4 might often times do

This will be another that Brand will use in his stats as a success, thank goodness

Hangover game ?

You always have to wonder how a team will respond after a game like the Devils had last week against Texas Tech...

Do you suppose that the Devils may be somewhat sluggish in this game and that it may end up being a closer game as a result..??

Road games are always harder and this is the Devils first road game...

I'd love for the Devils to take care of business early so we can play back-up guys in the second half...

I'm also going to be watching to see how many big plays we give up on defense, since we've already given up 87, 59, 76 and 66 yd TD passes in only two games so far and have the worst pass defense in the country, allowing 456 passing yards per game...

They say you make your greatest improvement as a team between your first and second games and that sure seemed to be the case offensively for the Devils...

Defensively, there would be no excuse for allowing the Roadrunners a lot of points or yardage in the game...

Right..??

It will be interesting to see how the return of Jay Jay Wilson and the transition of C Hill to TE plays out...Hill is 6'5" 285 and has good speed and athleticism and was a load in the Sparky formation last week against the Red Raiders...

I would imagine that they will rest C Sam and L Moeakiola and it looks like A Latu will play D-backer this week...

Is this game in the bag or is there any reason to be concerned, especially given our defensive shortcomings so far..??

Go Devils!!!

1st Half blitzing

this time i got every play not just plays that resulted in a pass attempt/sack

rushed three- 0

rushed four- 23 times

rushed five- 4 times (sack by Mendoza-lucky as RB WIDE OPEN, 3 yd run, 10 yd completion to Gump's man, 1 yd run)

rushed six- 9 times (1 yd run, TFL Calhoun, 7 yd comp. echols nice tackle, incomplete nice coverage Gump, incomplete-Gump with PI but uncatchable, incomplete right thru Gump's man's hands, 7 yard run, TFL Wicker etc, incomplete near sack by Crump

seven on the box on 4th and 1--once

Well, it didn't take long for Zane

after seeing the 50 yarder last week (his 1st as a Sun Devil) thought he needed some more 50 yarders to justify some NFL team using a draft pick. After 2 clean 54 yarders in the 1st half with plenty of leg (especially the 2nd one), he probably already justified that pick

1st time an ASU kicker has ever made 2 50-yard plus FGs in game

Free UTSA tickets if you Order Pizza Hut

so I am here in San Antonio at my brothers and a commercial came on from Pizza Hut. It said if you ordered pizza from them you would get two tickets to tomorrow's game. I don't remember if it was a specific size or how many but just wanted to give any sun devils in the area a heads up on this. I am assuming it's the local Pizza Hut. Anyways what this tells me is that it maybe a small crowd tomorrow and hope there are a ton of sun devils.

Wednesday's Practice Report: 9/14

ATTIRE: Shells

LOCATION: Kajikawa Practice Fields

MEDIA AVAILABILITY: About 25 minutes

GUESTS: I saw scouts from the Chargers, Saints, Bills, Packers and Chiefs

TILLMAN JERSEY: None

EN VERDE: N/A

TOWELS AND SUNSCREEN (muscle beach, no contact): LB Christian Sam, DT George Lea, LS Mitchell Fraboni, TE Grant Martinez, OL Tyson Rising. I also saw a #36, but there's no No. 36 on the roster.

Note: Tim White was with the WRs and not on muscle beach, but he didn't appear to be participating in drills.

The team worked on tackle circuit and other drills before moving into anything else. The drills seemed to be per usual.

Then, the offense ran an 11-on-0 drill. Here's how the teams looked:

First team: QB Manny Wilkins, RB Kalen Ballage, WRs N'Keal Harry, Fred Gammage (slot), Jalen Harvey, TE Kody Kohl, LT Evan Goodman, LG Sam Jones, C A.J. McCollum, RG Stephon McCray, RT Quinn Bailey

Second team: QB Brady White, RB Nick Ralston, WRs Cam Smith/Ryan Jenkins (slot), Ellis Jefferson, TE Jay Jay Wilson, LT Cohl Cabral, LG Alex Losoya, C Tyler McClure, RG Steven Miller, RT Zach Robertson

The only notables on the third team were Dillon Sterling-Cole and Terrell Chatman.

After this session, the team had a special teams period. As he does most of the time (if not all of it), Matt Haack looked really good. He's got a wicked spin to that punt when it comes off his left foot. Almost looks like that spin also helps with pinning teams back in their own territory — instead of a punt hitting the ground near the 15-yard line and bouncing hard toward the end zone, his punts seem to sit a bit easier after that spin.

Where Are Your Seats?

Hey Folks,

Just curious where do you guys sit for home games? Many of you are season ticket holders so I imagine they are in the same place game after game. Do you wish to be closer to or away from the band? student section, etc....For those of you who have been ticket holders for a real long time how have the changes of SDS been for you over the years? I love hearing about game day!

Texas Tech 2nd Half

I know the first half was a mess, but one interesting take away I have is once Marcus Ball was back in, missed first half and first drive of second half, the numbers are what the Texas Tech passing game produced.

6 Drives (2 TD's, 2 Punts, and 2 Interceptions) - Side note 3 of the drives did not yield a first down.
21 Dropbacks (Koron Crump Sack and 27 Yard Scramble by Mahomes)
19 Pass Attempts
10 Completions
143 Passing Yards (66 yards were on 4th down busted coverage)
1 TD
2 Interceptions

Not a bad effort when the game was on the line.

San Antonio Roll Call

Good Afternoon Sun Devils (morning where y'all are at)

Who's coming to San Antonio this weekend? I hope y'all enjoy our beautiful city! Should be warm and a little more humid than it normally is with a few scattered thunderstorms but should otherwise be great.

I'll be sitting with my family at the Alamo Dome in Section 140 Row 9 Seats 1-6. Feel free to drop by and say howdy! I'll also be at the Thursday Night Inferno on the Riverwalk at Republic of Texas Restaurant.

Hope to see y'all there! GO SUN DEVILS!!
