TFLs & Sacks & Takeaways

Some of the hot buttons in CTG's media comments have included TFLs/Sacks/Takeaways

Last night we returned to the high TFL (11) and high sack (7) numbers that we were regularly hitting in our 6-7 season in 2015

We had zero takeaways and lost the turnover battle 1-0

Wish we could have stolen a victory last night as I don't think it would have been remotely possible on the road. I had ASU at 6-2 at this point but I did not have us having a chance in Eugene and now I think we do. (If Manny is back and if we can get a takeaway or 2)

Projecting our season end Pass D stats

Every team (except Colorado 265 vs 300) exceeds their per game average passing yards when they play ASU.
However, assuming that the final 4 opponents only match their average (as noted below), we would end up averaging giving up 335 passing yards per game. As of now that would still be dead last in FBS but a full 50 yards per game better than we currently stand. That would be 3 yards per game better than 2015 (This does not include a Bowl game and perhaps we could meet up with Navy rather than Texas Tech). We would still be one of 3 teams to allow that many passing yards per game over at least the past 11 seasons in FBS, but we would not set the all time record.

Oregon 240
Utah 224
Udub 252
AU 210

Unfortunately it is extremely difficult to imagine Udub and Oregon bucking the trend. Browning got 291 and Oregon's RS Frosh got 258 this weekend.
However, Utah's Williams got only 179 & who knows who will be the QB for AU.

We've got a shot to avoid this undesired crown.

The Pac-12 has reprimanded and fined Mike Leach

WASHINGTON STATE FOOTBALL COACH REPRIMANDED AND FINED

SAN FRANCISCO -- The Pac-12 Conference has reprimanded and fined Washington State University head football coach Mike Leach $10,000 for his comments about the Arizona State University football program during his press conference on Monday, October 17.

“Conference rules prohibit Pac-12 member institutions from disparaging each other and discrediting other institutions,” said Pac-12 Commissioner Larry Scott.

“Information or accusations relative to rule violations must be handled by institutions filing those concerns with the Conference office through a formal process, and institutions must refrain from discussing those concerns publicly.”

“Currently, there are no playing rules that restrict a team from observing an opponent’s offensive or defensive signals. The NCAA playing rules (1-4-11-a, b and f) cover what audio and video equipment is prohibited in the team area, coaching box and coaches’ booth, and specifically state that any attempt to record, either through audio or video means, any signals given by an opposing player, coach or other team personal is prohibited.”

Ralph Amsden, Brett Quintyne and Chilly talk about Arizona State's flat performance in Boulder, and grapple over whether or not ASU lost to a "better" team.

The topic of Manny Wilkins is a sore subject, figuratively and literally- should he have been left in?

Ralph asks Brett and Chilly whether the NCAA should step in and do something to put an end to Mike Leach's accusations of Arizona State attempting to gain an unfair advantage through signal stealing.

Last, the guys talk about what ASU needs to do to take down their third air-raid opponent of the season this weekend.

This and That

Todd Graham said this morning on 98.7 FM that guard Sam Jones is out. I would anticipate that the lineup we saw in practice is what we will see on Saturday which means Stephon McCray sliding to left guard to replace Jones, Quinn Bailey at right guard and Zach Robertson at right tackle.

Manny Wilkins as Graham yesterday said is "questionable" for Saturday. Wilkins' ankle is feeling better but he has another ailment (that I cannot discuss) that is limiting him. I don't know if it's a given that he will start, but I wouldn't be surprised if he did. Obviously it just all depends on his physical condition come game time.

Dillon Sterling-Cole has looked better this week in practice, but is still somewhat erratic with his play. Obviously a lot has been placed on this true freshman's plate the last two weeks. If he does play meaningful minutes maybe he go out and surprise. WSU's defense is last in the Pac-12 in sacks so at least on paper ASU shouldn't be facing a pass rush juggernaut.

The defensive line has really been challenged in practice this week to step up after giving up 315 rushing yards last week. As we said in our video preview, and again this is all in theory, ASU's rush defense should have an easier time this week, but they have to be mindful of the fact that the Cougars have scored 14 rushing touchdowns in the red zone this year.

Remains to be seen if safety Armand Perry can play, let alone start. Chad Adams is likely to replace him in the lineup, not an enticing proposition. James Johnson isn't an option as he is out for this week due to a leg injury he suffered in practice. Don't know how long he will be out but it doesn't appear that it will be matter of a week or two.

Anybody watching the Ducks and the Bears tonight?

Since we are playing the Ducks next week I wanted to take a look at them and see why they are so bad. They too are starting a RS freshman at QB. Who isn't playing a true freshman or RS freshman at QB in the PAC this year.

Anyway, would like to see the Ducks get goosed tonight so they are just mentally whipped when we come in to play them next week. Maybe the fans will stay home.

OT - Mayo Clinic, ASU join forces on new Med School

Don't know all the politics around ASU vs UA regarding medical schools but this is huge.

Props to Dr. Crow.

The Mayo Clinic is recruiting its first class of 50 students for a new medical school that will begin next summer on its campus in Scottsdale.

It's a tangible step in what Mayo and Arizona State University leaders say will be a growing effort to bring innovative medical education to Arizona and beyond. The two entities described the arrangement as the Mayo Clinic and Arizona State University Alliance for Health Care.

The Mayo Clinic School of Medicine has raised private donations to renovate an existing building to create classroom and training space at Mayo's Scottsdale campus, located at 13400 E. Shea Blvd. The Mayo Clinic School of Medicine is an accredited medical school with locations in Rochester, Minn., Florida and the soon-to-open Arizona location.

ASU has purchased a land parcel near Mayo Clinic's hospital in northeast Phoenix. The university has started design work and expects to start construction there next year on a 150,000-square-foot building to be named the Health Solutions Innovation Center.

ASU President Michael Crow said at least two schools — ASU's schools of biomedical informatics and science of health-care delivery — will relocate to the new building when it is completed. The new building also will include a med-tech innovation accelerator and biomedical engineering, according to ASU.

Crow noted that other ASU researchers are investigating areas such as consumer-wearable devices that could track vital signs and other health measurements. If used correctly, such devices could potentially relay key information about a patient to a doctor via smartphone, preventing or delaying a medical emergency.

When Mayo opens next summer, it will be the second four-year medical school in metro Phoenix. It will come one decade after the University of Arizona opened a branch campus in Phoenix in 2007. The UA College of Medicine now has independently accredited medical schools in Tucson and Phoenix. The publicly funded Phoenix medical school graduates about 80 doctors each year.

Creighton University also trains its third- and fourth-year medical-school students at St. Joseph's Hospital and Medical Center in Phoenix. Two other private schools — Midwestern University in Glendale and A.T. Still University in Mesa — operate osteopathic medical schools that graduate students with DO degrees.

The Mayo Clinic School of Medicine already has secured clinical-training locations in metro Phoenix. Students will use them when they advance from the classroom to hands-on clinical work. In addition to training at Mayo Clinic's hospital in Phoenix, students can learn pediatrics at Phoenix Children's Hospital and obstetrics at Maricopa Integrated Health System, the county's health district.

Mayo also will train students at Mountain Park Health Center, a community health-care center with more than a half-dozen clinics in metro Phoenix.

Dr. Michele Halyard, who will serve as dean at the Mayo Clinic School of Medicine campus in Scottsdale, said the Arizona school already has received about 3,000 applications for the initial class of 50 students. The school will accept applications through the fall, she said.

Four-star combo guard Lindell Wigginton announcing Friday

As I posted on Iowa State board------------

I've been calling around on this one all day and there seems to be no clear consensus. My feel for most of the recruitment has been that Oregon would be the team to beat but from what I've heard asking around today, Wigginton has left each of the three remaining staffs feeling pretty good about their chances with him tomorrow.

Wish I could offer something more concrete than that but every once in a while you get a kid who either tells or gives off the vibe to all the schools involved that he's coming. Looks like that might be the case with Lindell. Will keep checking for info and stop by if I hear anything further to add.

---------------

Arizona State is the most recent official visit and Hurley did coach his older brother so there are some ties. This one has me all out of sorts. Wish I could give a more clear direction on what's happening but I do think the Sun Devils have felt like they have a really good shot since he visited.
