Sun Devil Hockey picks up historic win

Our boys knocked off #18 Air Force today at Gila River Arena, 5-2. It was our first program win over a ranked opponent and first home win over a D1 opponent. Amazing game all around. This was a result that was coming. After the first game debacle, this team hung with Notre Dame and was tied in third. On Friday we lost 4-3 to Air Force in a game we could have won. This is a greatly improved team from last year and very entertaining to watch. Do yourself a favor and get some tickets. You will love the fast paced action. Go Devils!

ASU Hoops to Host Free Exhibition Game Thursday, Nov. 3 At 7 p.m.

The Arizona State men's basketball team will host UC Santa Cruz on Thursday, Nov. 3, at 7 p.m., in an exhibition game that will be will be free.

The NCAA allows men's basketball teams to play two preseason games, and it can be a combination of closed scrimmages against NCAA Division I teams and/or exhibitions against non D-I teams.

UC Santa Cruz is coached by Sun Devil almuni Ronnie DuBois, a former walkon who earned a scholarship, was Sun Devil team captain his senior year and earned all-academic Pac-10 honors in 1998-99. DuBois majored in Education and received his B.A. in 1999 and M.A. in 2001.

The Sun Devils, 58-14 (.806) at home the past four seasons, will have their first five home games broadcast by Pac-12 Networks before it hosts an ESPN2 broadcast at 7 p.m. against Creighton. The 2016-17 Sun Devil men's basketball regular season will begin on Veteran's Day (Friday, Nov. 11) with a 7 p.m. MT tip against Portland State and conclude with a visit from CBS on Saturday, March 4, for a 2 p.m. Territorial Cup Series matchup.

ASU is 58-14 (.805) at home in the past four years and has five wins over ranked teams in Wells Fargo Arena in the past three seasons. The best home win in its history came on February 14, 2014, when the Devils upset No. 2 Arizona in the Territorial Cup in overtime, 69-66, as ASU has won three of the past five at home against Arizona. ASU also upset eventual SEC champion Texas A&M and No. 23 USC at home in 2015-16.

Poll: DSC or an 80% Manny?

Who should start/play this weekend - DSC or an 80% Manny?

  • DSC all the way. Need to give him the green light and get experience. Let Manny heal. Long season.

    Votes: 26 26.5%
  • Start Manny. Even at 80% he will still be more effective than DSC.

    Votes: 26 26.5%
  • Start DSC and see how he handles himself the first 4-5 series and then maybe rotate with Manny.

    Votes: 29 29.6%
  • Start DSC and stay with DSC as long as our defense can stay within striking distance.

    Votes: 17 17.3%

Curious what the board thinks about who should start this weekend if Manny is only around 80%? It sounds like Thursday is his first day he played live scrimmage and CTG said he looks good but if you can only practice two days before game time are you really ready to play?

Mind you, I am guessing he is only 80% based on him not practicing in live scrimmage until today.

Quick Note

For those who are wondering why tight end Jay Jay Wilson didn't play in Colorado - he didn't travel with the team as he was suspended for failure of meeting team expectations. If you recall, he was suspended for the first three games of this season for the same reason. This isn't anything legal in nature, but obviously unfortunate that he has already missed more than half of the team's games this season.

Keith Patterson

Here we go again. Just when you think our DC might turn it around, we get this nonsense. Yes Colorado is improved. But our defense of much better rated players got raked by 2-star recruits that had few serious offers--Rich Rodriguez type recruits. Will someone tell Todd that blind loyalty can get you fired! And if Todd is running this defensive clown show, then he needs to fire himself from the defense and focus on who to hire at the end of the season. After we win 2 or 3 (wishful thinking on 3) more games and go bowling again, we will be returning 17 or 18 starters for next year and the pac 12 title will not be a goal, it will be a must. BUT, IT WILL NOT GET DONE WITH THE PRESENT DC. I am more than angry at what I saw Saturday defensively.

Monday Morning QB

Ipso Facto...you are not going to win many games with a below average or injured QB...

In this case, with Brady gone for the season and the hot shot freshman not yet ready for the big leagues, we are in the position to use an injured Manny against formidable PAC opponents that is the equivalent of fighting with one hand tied behind your back...

An injured Manny makes him one dimensional and easy to defend against, whether we want to admit that or not...

Put that together with a defense that is that in name only and you are looking at big trouble looming ahead for the Sun Devils...

Meanwhile, our next opponent, Wazzu, has one of the best QBs in the land in Luke Falk and, with our inept defense, it is anyone's guess as to how many yards and points the Cougars will put up against the Devils...

My guess is that it will be a lot of yards and a lot of points and, with Manny not being close to 100%, the offense will be easy to defend against and, therefore, will not be able to score a bunch of points...

We have plenty of depth issues on the team and some talent issues as well but no one figured we would be in this place with our QB situation at the start of the season...

From my standpoint, we should not have as many issues as we currently have if Todd and his crew had been recruiting more effectively over the past four to five years but it is what it is and he is not alone, when it comes to those type of things...just look at UCLA and AU as well...

On the plus side, we are still 5-2 and only need a couple more wins to become bowl eligible which would salvage the season to some extent given our injuries and crappy defense...

I wish we could wire Paladin in San Francisco so he could ride in on horseback to rescue us but Have Gun, Will Travel went off the air in 1963...

I can still see Richard Boone, like the present day Jack Reacher, pulling into town and setting things straight there for those that can't defend themselves...

Lord knows that we are having a very hard time defending ourselves these days...;)

Not to be lost in all this is the work of Zane Gonzalez and Matt Haack who have made our special teams special...

In addition to our QB situation, we also have missed Christian Sam a lot on defense, although he doesn't play in the secondary but he is one of our better defensive players who has been sidelined by an injury...

On another note, Cowherd last week said that for a program to be really successful there need to be at least 30 in-state elite players that local teams can recruit and I'm sure that Arizona doesn't yet fit that description...

Obviously, places like Cal, Texas, Ohio and Florida do but they also have every team in the nation recruiting there as well...

I sure hope that our new coaches are great at establishing relationships because that is the name of the game in recruiting...

What do you think about any of this..??

Go Devils!!!

Zane Gonzalez Earns School-Record Fourth Pac-12 Player of the Week Honor

TEMPE, Ariz. – After yet another record-breaking night in Boulder on Saturday, senior place kicker Zane Gonzalez earned Pac-12 Special Teams Player of the Week honors for the fourth-time in the 2016 season.

The fourth Pac-12 Player of the Week honor for Gonzalez in 2016 sets a new ASU single-season record, passing Thomas Weber's 2007 mark of three recognitions. The honor also marks the sixth career recognition for Gonzalez and is ASU's seventh Pac-12 Player of the Week recognition in the 2016 campaign, just two back of the program-best eight Pac-12 recognitions received in 1996.

Gonzalez scored his first point of the game with an extra point in the first quarter, before connecting on field goals of 51 and 50 in the second and third quarters, respectively. The pair of makes marked the second time this season where he has hit two field goals from 50-yards or more in a single game.

Eyeing down FSU's Dustin Hopkins FBS record of most career points by a kicker, Gonzalez looped in a career-long 59-yarder in the fourth quarter, scoring his 468 collegiate point and setting a new FBS kicker scoring record. The 59-yard strike also tied the FBS record for most 50+ yard field goals in a game with three, while crushing the Sun Devil record for longest field goal. The make was also the longest field goal ever made at Folsom Field by an opponent. Following Saturday's game, Gonzalez now has four of the eight longest field goals in Sun Devil history.

With his three field goals, and one extra point, Gonzalez has scored at least one point in all 46 games he has played as a Sun Devil. That scoring streak sets a new ASU record, breaking his tie with Luis Zendejas who scored in 45 consecutive games.

Matt Haack

Hod highlights his efforts in his Post game Thoughts including this :
"two landed inside the 20-yard line and more importantly the wicked spin he placed on two of his punts, caused the Buffalo punt returner, Jay MacIntyre, to fumble twice. "

Currently 7th in FBS with a 46.84 average yards per punt
25th in FBS with 37 punts
42nd in FBS with 5.3 punts per game
ASU is 25th in FBS in Opponent Punt Return Average at 3.17 yards per return
Only 12 of the 38 punts have been returned (included in those 12 are those that were fumbled and ASU recovered)

Last night he had his first 3 touchbacks of the season and one of them went for a net 56 yards

Unfortunately he has little chance of being selected All-Pac 12 as Utah's punter still has 2 home games left (in the stat padding elevation) and is currently #1 in FBS averaging 49.13 on 31 punts. (His average drops 5 yards per punt away from home but one of the remaining road games is in Boulder).

Sunday Walkabout

Mornin Mates...

Today's Topic = Wait Until Next Year

As Arizona has found out this year with all of its QB issues and lack of quality players and depth issues, the Cats are going nowhere fast and now the Sun Devils are not that far behind them it would appear...

ASU was supposed to lose to Colorado but they didn't just lose but got embarrassed defensively once again, only this time the Buffs ran at will against our supposedly great rushing defense and came away with a whooping 315 yards rushing to go along with 265 yards passing...

We weren't going to beat CU with Manny at about 50% mobility and Gonzales isn't going to kick enough FGs in a game like this to win, either...

However, the most glaring deficiencies are related to fundamentals where we are just awful in so many areas, it is beyond understanding, when you have a coaching staff being paid millions of dollars to get those things accomplished during a season...

The irony on defense is that Graham is a defensive minded coach who loves that part of the game and, yet, in his fifth season at ASU, the defense is as pathetic as this one is, that is following on the same path as the pathetic defense we had last seasons, too...

Which brings us to some changes that are going to have to be made soon on the defensive side of the ball and I have come to the conclusion that getting rid of Keith Patterson will not be just a scapegoating exercise, based on what has been seen on that side of the ball, ever since he was hired by Graham three years ago...

A lot of it has to do with glaring talent deficiencies on defense, especially in the secondary, but most of it, at this point, has to fall on the shoulders of Todd and his defensive staff and in particular Keith Patterson...

The biggest problem is the one associated with coaching credibility, not with just the fans and boosters, but with the players themselves, when they get taken apart, week after agonizing week, by just about every opponent...it's very embarrassing, which they know more than anybody else and that is all on the coaches and nobody else...

At least the ineptitude of the Sun Devils allowed me to turn the channel back and forth between our game and the Cubs-Dodgers baseball game, where great things happened in the 8th inning, when former D-back Miguel Montero hit a Grand Slam HR to win the game for the Cubs...

Getting back to the PAC, the Cougs beat the Bruins in Pullman and at least the Bruins were competitive in that game, even using their second string QB since Rosen wasn't available...

The talented Trojans demolished the hapless Cats and look now to be the best team in the South, while Stanford beat Notre Dame that was ranked in the Top 10 before the season started and the Irish are now 2-5 and may not become bowl eligible...

I'm hopeful that we'll win another couple of games to be bowl eligible but with this defense of ours and with our current QB situation, that may be a very tall order...

I know some will say that Keith Patterson is not the big issue with the defense but I've seen enough and, even with the talent deficits that exist on defense, the defense is not being coordinated in any meaningful way these days, in my humble opinion, so something needs to be done soon to correct that issue...

In the meantime, we can all wait until next year as fate was just not on our side this season...

As always, I will look forward to your feedback...;)

G'day Mates and Go Devils!!!

Zane Gonzalez's Record Night

Quite the night for the ASU kicker

First, he now holds the FBS record for most career points by a kicker with 468.
Second, he tied the FBS record for most 50+ yard field goals in a game with three (tied with five other players.

-He also crushed the ASU school record for longest field goal, which was previously 55 yards.

LONGEST FIELD GOALS IN ASU HISTORY
59, Zane Gonzalez at Colorado (Oct. 15, 2016)
55, Luis Zendejas vs. Oregon State (Nov. 6, 1982)
54, Zane Gonzalez at Texas-San Antonio (Sept. 16, 2016)
54, Zane Gonzalez at Texas-San Antonio (Sept. 16, 2016)
54, Luis Zendejas vs. Oklahoma/Fiesta Bowl (Jan. 1, 1983)
53, Zane Gonzalez vs. Northern Arizona (Sept. 3, 2016)
53, Thomas Weber at Arizona (Dec. 2, 2010)

-Zane Gonzalez now has six kicks over 50 yards this season. Entering the weekend, only two other FBS players had more than one (2). The FBS record for most 50+ field goals in a season in 8 (Fuad Reveiz, Tennesee, 1982)
-Gonzalez is now 19-of-20 on field goals this season and his lone miss came on a 53-yard attempt at UTSA. He entered the weekend leading the nation for most field goals made.
--
-Zane Gonzalez has kicked two 50+ yard field goals in a single game twice this season. He is the only player in ASU history to do so in one game, let alone two. The NCAA FBS record is 3 (by a couple players)-Gonzalez had no field goal kicks over 50 yards prior to this season.
