Ralph Amsden talks with Brett Quintyne and Chilly about how ASU football's offseason has gone, including Pac-12 Media Day, Camp Tontozona, and Arizona State's in-house Media Day.

Includes Interviews with Christian Sam, Kareem Orr, Demario Richard and Todd Graham.

The guys also talk about the state of ASU basketball, and Brett has a lengthy interview with ArizonaVarsity.com head basketball analyst Gregg Rosenberg.

Saguaro notes

Went out to Saguaro to see the ASU commits, and potential ASU commit, and potential future ASU recruits.

Kyle Soelle: He's in a rush-end and H-back role with Saguaro. Talked to him after and he said he's not really comfortable at end yet and he's still getting used to it and with him jumping from the right to left side each play. He stayed disciplined on contain, but Serra's QB might be their fastest player, and he did shake Soelle at least twice.

Jared Poplawski: He's definitely 6-4. Wanted to see him next to Solle and Stephens up close to be sure. He played well, especially on his rotations in on the defensive line. Offensively he'd repeatedly sneak behind the defense, and on one rep Max Massingale found him on his last progression for the easiest score of the day.

Corey Stephens: Left tackle, held his own as he always does. He's in much better shape than he was for Saguaro's first game last year. This was hinestly the first time I saw him up close where I thought he had a D1 body. He's leaner, and starting to showcase core strength in his blocking. He also came out of the game looking like he hadn't broken a sweat. He told me he thinks this year's team would "smack" last year's team.

KJ Jarrell: A quiet game for Jarrell defensively, but he told me they're expanding his role in offense as sort of a large slot WR. He scored Sag's first TD on a short reception over the middle. Jarrell told me the season is a welcome distraction from recruiting. He's probably going to take his decision close to signing day like Kirk and Murphy.

Josiah Bradley: could be the next Saguaro star- went off tonight, scored 3 times and had an interception. He's a junior. Mohns said nothing about the performance surprised him.

Note on Today's Practice

As you know the scrimmage today was closed, so we will only have coverage after the scrimmage which will be only quotes from Graham. I will also have a video piece wrapping up the third week of preseason preparations.

On a related note, the team is starting to be in game mode so to speak this upcoming week and will not have practices on Monday, although they would still have weight room sessions and meetings on that day. So our next practice report will be August 23rd.

Chandler notes

I was out at Red Mountain last night for ArizonaVarsity for the season opener between them and Chandler, which Chandler won 34-10. While the best player for Red Mountain is inarguably QB Lance Lawson (a 5-8 scatback disguised as a quarterback in an option system), Chandler will always have some intriguing pieces.

Ryan Johnson - RB/WR (5-8, 175 lbs, Class of 2017)

Rivals page: https://n.rivals.com/content/prospects/maple/172336

Jeez, this guy is really, really quick. He scored a trio of touchdowns -- two of which were of 50+ yards -- and nearly had a fourth had it not been for a holding penalty. Coach Shaun Aguano, who has coached his fair share of D1 players, called Johnson the "fastest kid I have ever seen on a football field." The size could be an issue, but Johnson has unbelievable speed and quickness when turning the corner. Friday was Johnson's first game with the Wolves after coming over from Orchard Lake (Mich.) St. Mary's last season. He currently has no reported offers, but could have some Arizona State interest stemming from participating in ASU's Maroon and Gold camp last month. He could use a big senior season to draw up his recruiting, much like WR Justin Jan did in 2014 (he was offered by Colorado and is currently trying to crack the two-deep there).

Jacob Conover - QB (6-1, 185 lbs, Class of 2019)

Rivals page: N/A

It's way too early to project what Conover will become, since Friday was his first career varisty start. But I really, really liked what I saw out of him outside of the first quarter. He started off rocky with some admitted jitters, drawing a false start and (by my count) completing only two passes through the first few series. He then found the aforementioned Johnson for a 51-yard touchdown on a simple pass in the flat, and that seemed to get him going. When he's right, he's confident, accurate and throws about as pretty of a deep ball as I've seen in recent years from a kid his age (Note: I still have not seen Spencer Rattler live). He developed some real chemistry with UNLV commit Johnny Johnson, tossing in a dime for 30 yards on a post route that should have been a touchdown if the receiver had gotten more separation. Of course, nobody is going to offer him for a performance that saw him barely eclipse 180 passing yards and one touchdown, but he showed flashes of what could come. Chandler has a reputation for developing quarterbacks, as their last four starters -- Brett Hundley (UCLA/Green Bay Packers), Darrel Garretson (Utah State/Oregon State), Bryce Perkins (ASU) and Mason Moran (Oregon State) all spent time in the Pac-12. Keep an eye on this name, especially if he performs well at Corona (CA) Centennial.

T.J. Green - RB (6-0, 185 lbs, Class of 2017)

Rivals page: https://n.rivals.com/content/prospects/maple/186257

Rivals ranking: 3-star

Commitment: Oregon State

Green committed to the Beavers just this past week, joining Garretson, Moran, LB Hamilcar Rashed and fellow 2017 Chandler prospect Kolby Taylor (Kerry's little brother) as players from Chandler who will be in Corvallis the next few years. I didn't get a chance to speak with Green about his commitment, but I wouldn't be surprised if he garners even more interest as the season goes on. He struggled out of the game, but as things opened up so would he. He had the best play of the night, taking a sweep down the left sideline before leaning as if he was going out of bounds, planting his leg and firing off a vicious spin move to cap off what would be a 35-yard run. A couple plays later, he punched it in for a touchdown.

Friday's Practice Report: 8/19/16

ATTIRE: Helmets

LOCATION: Verde Dickey Dome

MEDIA AVAILABILITY: About 35 minutes

GUESTS: I saw a scout from the Bears there today.

TILLMAN JERSEY: None

EN VERDE (No contact): There were only a few players in green on Friday. Todd Graham was joking with the media about how we were going to figure out who was still injured.

The ones I saw in green were Khaylan Thomas, Das Tautalatasi and Maurice Chandler..
As Fabian reported yesterday, "Goose" Cosgrove suffered a knee injury in the W drill, but I didn't see him out at practice.

TE Grant Martinez and LS Mitchell Fraboni were dressed, but in shoes instead of cleats. The others I saw on muscle beach were DEVIL JoJo Wicker, OL Marshal Nathe and OL Tyson Rising.

Note: Raymond Epps was running through drills, but had a big cast on his right hand and we did not see him in team drills.

After doing the ball security drills, ASU ran an 11-on-11 two-minute drill. It did not appear to be as lengthy as other two-minute drills we've seen, but there was one turnover. Kalen Ballage had the ball knocked out of his hands, it popped up and Christian Sam caught it.

Other than that, it was pretty standard and the period ended with a Zane Gonzalez 42-yard field goal.

Here is how the depth chart looked:

First-team O: QB Brady White, RB Kalen Ballage, WRs Tim White (slot)/Ellis Jefferson/Cam Smith, TE Kody Kohl, LT Evan Goodman, LG Sam Jones, C Stephon McCray, RG Quinn Bailey, RT Zach Robertson
Second-team O: QB Manny Wilkins, RB Kalen Ballage, WRs Tim White (slot)/Ellis Jefferson/Jalen Harvey, TE Kody Kohl, LT Evan Goodman, LG Sam Jones, C Stephon McCray, RG Quinn Bailey, RT Zach Robertson
Defense: Smallwood (DT), Ami Latu (nose), Renell Wren (DE), Malik Lawal/Koron Crump (DEVIL, rotated), D.J. Calhoun (SAM), Christian Sam (WILL), Tyler Whiley (SPUR), Bryson Echols (FC), Kareem Orr (BC) , Chad Adams (BS), Armand Perry (FS)

Safeties were aligned so Perry was closer to the line of scrimmage. Adams was playing back on the secondary.

Note: Demario Richard was not in. Also, the first and second teams for the offense were nearly identical, but I gave both teams for comparison purposes.

Following the team session, there was one more period. The D-line worked on tackling drills, the )-line worked with the bags and the receivers were working on the far side.

Tomorrow's scrimmage is closed to the media, but we will be at interviews tomorrow and will have content after that.

OT: For the High School Football Fans

My ArizonaVarsity Media Poll is back up and running- the preseason poll only has about half our normal amount of voters, but it's still interesting to see how it shook out. Ever seen Hamilton open up at #4 in the state?

I don't vote in this poll because it's hard for me to stare at the ballots I collect all week and not be influenced. This year I'm running a huge power poll (regardless of division) instead. I'll have that posted tomorrow.

  • Poll
ASU's (Second) Most Surprising Team

What Was ASU's (Second) Most Surprising Season?

So I don't come across as a Debbie-Downer I thought I'd follow yesterday's post with the opposite topic. I was going to do ASU's MOST surprising team, but I knew in a heartbeat it'd be an overwhelming response to the 1996 Sun Devils. We of course all knew that this was the one rarity it would seem where we entered the season with fairly high expectations only to blow them away completely. We started the season ranked in the top 25 and played a very gritty opener against U-Dub whereby we had a three TD lead only to have them tie it up again in the fourth quarter but we eventually beat them on a Robert Nycz field goal as time expired. That then propelled us to the amazing shut-out of #1 Nebraska who were back to back national champs. That week prior even SI did a cover story that said "RED ALERT: Can anyone beat Nebraska?" That legendary win vaulted us to an undefeated regular season, a Rose Bowl berth, a #2 ranking going into the Rose Bowl, and put us within a minute of winning the national title. Without a doubt that was our most surprising season.

So with that said, what was our second most surprising season? Once more keep in mind, I've only been religiously following ASU football since the mid-90's so I'm sure there are plenty before the ones I'm giving you here:

1997

posted_091413_lb-pat-tillman-led-no-17-arizona-state-to-upset-of-no-1-nebraska-in-1996.jpg

EXPECTATIONS: ASU lost the vast majority of its starters from that legendary 1996 squad. While many thought we'd have the talent to make some noise, we were also breaking in a new QB in Ryan Kealy and had a very difficult schedule that year.

REALITY: ASU would go on to a 9-3 season including some major upsets against Miami in the Orange Bowl and the eventual Pac-10 champs Washington State. A disappointing outing against the rats however was the only thing keeping the Sun Devils from making a Fiesta Bowl berth and winning a share of the Pac title with Wazzu.

2002

PHP4E962D4530706.jpg

EXPECTATIONS: Not very many going into the season as ASU was breaking in a new QB in Ryan Christiansen and had some formidable opponents on the schedule including a season opener in Lincoln, Nebraska, North Carolina at home, and Oregon on the road.

REALITY: ASU was blown out in Lincoln (despite keeping it competitive through the third quarter) and was looking very bad in its third game against San Diego State on the road being down 21-0 early. That's when Dirk Koetter eventually benched Christiansen for Andrew Walter. Walter's first two passes were long TD passes and ASU overcame the deficit easily and punished SDSU. From there they had a roller coaster season that included a loss to North Carolina, but a HUGE upset over #6 Oregon at Autzen Stadium (also after being down 21-0). The Sun Devils ended up with a respectable 8-5 record in the regular season and found themselves with a berth in the Holiday Bowl against #5 K-State. ASU were 42 point underdogs in that game but lead the entire match up until the closing seconds when K-State managed to finally pull out a small victory.

2007

91499.jpg

EXPECTATIONS: ASU returned the vast majority of their 7-6 team from the year before but having Dennis Erickson as a new coach was a bit of a wild card. The general consensus was that we'd probably repeat the performance from a year earlier, maybe notch an extra win or two.

REALITY: In practically every game, ASU trailed, even badly at some points, but still managed to start the season off 8-0 and eventually achieve a #6 ranking. A trip to Autzen Stadium however stopped the Sun Devils party with their first loss of the season. ASU would then pick up two more victories with a shot at winning the Pac and returning to the Rose Bowl if they could get by USC. Unfortunately USC crushed the Sun Devils on Thanksgiving Day at Sun Devil Stadium, but ASU did still share the honors for the conference title earning them a spot in the Holiday Bowl. ASU was then crushed by Texas in the Holiday Bowl but ended the season off with a very surprising 10-3 record, which would be the only winning record Erickson achieved in his five years at ASU.

2012

20121007_060253_Arizonastate_500.jpg

EXPECTATIONS: One word..."dismal". New coach, new quarterback, new offense, barely a lick of any talent from the highly touted (yet disappointing) 2011 squad. Even I remember predicting only five wins that year and I'm the eternal optimist! Talent-wise, ASU was the very definition of having "the cupboard left bare".

REALITY: ASU started off the season completely destroying NAU. While yes it was NAU, this was the first time I can remember ASU handling them like a Pac team was supposed to handle an FCS team dropping 60+ on them. ASU's surprising offense and opportunistic defense would then pick up some solid wins against Illinois (and their legendary defense) and Utah while nearly pulling off an amazing comeback in Columbia against Mizzou. ASU would start the season 5-1 but then hit a major roadblock losing their next four straight. ASU would then go on to win its next three including a thrashing of Washington State, an amazing come from behind win in Sucton (during the infamous dancing tomato game), and a dismantling of Navy in the Fight Hunger Bowl. The 8-5 record completely destroyed the low expectations going into the season.

2014

1406310244000-USATSI-7591657.jpg

EXPECTATIONS: Despite plenty of talent returning on the offensive side of the ball, ASU had to replace nine starters on its defense including back to back Pat Tillman Award Winner Will Sutton and his protege Carl Bradford. Many of the positions on the defensive side of the ball were manned by true freshmen. The loss of so much talent from the prior year's 10 win season that saw ASU win its first divisional title lead many to temper their expectations for ASU's chances for success. (Some publications even outright predicted we wouldn't even make a bowl)

REALITY: The freshmen stepped up big time for ASU and the Devils once more were one of the nation's leaders in forcing turnovers. This lead to ASU notching a 9-3 regular season which gave ASU a very realistic chance at repeating as South Champs up until their final game against the rats who squeaked by the Sun Devils. ASU landed a Sun Bowl berth and beat a talented Duke squad in a very thrilling game where ASU intercepted the ball on the final play of the game in the end zone to secure a back to back 10 win season.
